I live in Chicago suburbs. I'd love to have fiber, but my choices are limited to Comcast or AT&T. Since my municipality has a "Franchise" agreement with Comcast, I have to take the "triple play" whether I want it or not. Fail. AT&T has fiber available, but it's 3248' to the "Cabinet" and I'd have to pay to have the fiber installed the whole way. So for now, I'm stuck with a "bonded pair" and iffy service. Glad to see you have great options, that speed and personal control is worth it.
Like "coaxial" cable internet, PON fiber internet has an aspect of shared media. Where many cable modem subscribers share a single cable trunk, several fiber internet subscribers will share a single OLT port. Because the amount of bandwidth shared can be much higher (eg 10 Gbps) and the number sharing might be lower (eg 32), the user may perceive a dedicated connection. Each subscriber does have their own fiber going all the way to the splitter, and that is an improvement. However, all of the subscribers on the same splitter and OLT port ("PON segment") have fibers that all receive the same download pulses. When a neighbor downloads, his downloads are going to the ONTs of the whole PON segment, and all but his ignore this. In this way the other users may decrease your available bandwidth. One may be able to negotiate for an OLT port that is not split and shared with others, likely at a higher cost.

Used to pay $34 (converted from Php) for an ADSL internet broadband with DL/UL speeds of up to 15/0.5 Mbps (no data cap) but then our ISP decided to upgrade other people's internet in our area to fiber/vdsl EXCEPT FOR US. Besides, we've been getting sh*tty service from them (an intermittent connection that lasted for about a month that ended up to no connection at all. Been contacting them to fix our line or better yet, migrate our line to fiber, but got no feedback from them) Our neighbors were getting fiber/vdsl connection with symmetric speeds but we were stuck with ADSL. So what I did was switch to another ISP and they gave us the best fiber internet connection. We pay about $38 for a 35/30 Mbps (no data cap) internet connection. I have no regrets about switching (Edit: I know $38 is still expensive for a 35/30 Mbps connection but right now, that's pretty cheap in my country. that is all they can provide for their subscribers right now. But hopefully, after they make network upgrades we would get a better and faster connection for the same price 🤞🤞🤞)
Brett, great video. Glad you have fiber to your home. You alluded to the difference between GPON and active ethernet fiber. I am not a pro, just someone who finds this all very interesting. At my home I am fortunate enough to have access to both types of fiber. A local company has active ethernet and a local teleco has GPON. Being the nerd that I am I subscribe to both. In all honesty I really haven't seen a difference in speed, ping, etc. I will say the local company with active ethernet has far more subscribers as they started fiber optic service quite a long time ago and offer excellent customer service. So the GPON that the local telco offers has far fewer subscribers and therefore is not fully loaded. Keep posting your great videos!
I'm paying for $54 per month for a 300/300 connection here in the Philippines. And yes, it's quite stable. I've never gotten speeds less than 300mbps. Yeah, as long as you get a decent plan here, you get decent speeds. Still, due to the free nationwide speedboost our Telco gives, even people that are on the $26 plan get 200mbps.
Meanwhile in France we got 2Gb connection for 35€/month including the equipment. That's one of the (only) good things in France ! Nevermind good video ! Have a good day American friends ❤👌
I've never heard of a private fiber network that sells connectivity to ISP's. You're very fortunate to have this option available. In my area I'm stuck with either Comcast or AT&T for now. Hoping Google fiber will enter the market soon.
This is very common. It's called TPIA. (Third Party internet Access) The broadband company that owns the infrastructure sells access known as "White Label Wholesale". The ISP buys the bandwidth in bulk at a very cheap rate. Then resells it to their customers. A lot of people are provided internet by these companies and don't even know it.
Utopia fiber options where not available to me. However about a month after buying my home Google fiber became available to me. The one huge benefit of going to Google fiber over Utopia or any other provider is that you do not pay for installation or equipment. I recently was given the option to update my Google fiber router to two Google WiFi routers at no cost to me. One as the main modem and the other as a mesh access point. That's a savings of about $200.
AT&T has the newer bgw320 gateway with ONT onboard. No separate ONT. Just run the line from the outside point into the house and right to the gateway. They also have symmetrical download and upload speeds standard.
I switched to fiber a few months ago.....I was tired of all the issues with cable. Cable had too many customers on one line and everything slowed right down when everyone was home at night and between internet and tv my bill was over $200 a month. I'm using Chromecast with Google TV and Cobra Hosting for TV. I run the same setup with Google Nest Wifi router.... uploading videos is much faster now.
I'm trying to set up a mesh wireless network. There's significant speed loss. I contacted my mesh hardware company and they say it's perfectly normal. What should I check to see if I can improve things? Or do I just suffer?
I live in a rural area of Mexico, around 7,000 habitants. And today, I got fiber in my home, 80 mbps download, i can’t believe rural USA towns haven’t gotten fiber.
100% Fiber in my area finally they came out and Buried the Fiber line and box on the side of the House next week ONT etc will be installed :) 1 GB DN/UP
I'm getting 300mbps at 9usd in India Its good to see how much eastern countries like India, China and others develop alot faster than west. And also in much much cheaper rates. Because I remember i used to watch high internet speed of west world 10 years ago... When I surf with 512kbps. Now we also have 4g connection with unlimited calls and 2gb data per days in 3 usd per month. Its truly mind boggling.
Cable can be almost as good as Fiber these day.. Most of the problems you described were specific to your line or ISP in your area ( tho fiber doesn't have these problems regardless of area so it's better ) ... The only exception being the bad upload speed but cable companies are working on that and many will offer same up and download speeds in the next 2-3 year spectrum has it set to 2025 nationwide.. ... Also these day wifi can reach 1Gig or higher internet it must be wifi 6 and some other factors but it can be done... I can do 1.1Gbps on my wifi with my tablet..and like 1Gig-900 on my laptop...
You should know that the limits of the attached items limit your speeds. It’s important to watch the items speed limits before install! Some tech has speeds of 10 GBs now! Just read the specs before you buy a connected device also cables ratings are important! Cat 6 cables for fast rated speeds!
I am moving in a few months, could you make a separate video about what to look in an ISP when signing up for internet, also if i should use their modem or my own?
I was paying around $50 (converted price from IDR) for 150 Mbps up/down connection (160 down and 135 up as tested) FTTH connection as well as Static IP. Fibre connection in Indonesia is pretty pricey ugh..
I get 1/1 gbps fiber, unlimited net, TV, unlimited wired phone, and 20 GB mobile data just for around 50 USD. And the ISP provides the modem and the set-top-boxes without any extra fee.
In Montreal, I currently have a contract (commercial) with 1Gb coaxial and it's been pretty good but they've recently gone with a dedicated "smart" modem same as your Xfinity provider but they've now limited their speed to 400 Mbps so when my contract is up next year, I'll look to their competitor that does have fiber and offers up to 1.5 Gb. Only issue is, I've never liked dealing with them and never thought I'd go back. So if my current ISP does not want to continue my offering, they will lose me.
1.2 terabyte limit? Wow. I thought my 1200 gigs was outrageous. I have comcast xfinity, and it’s pretty good. But Frontier fiber was just expanded into my area. 3 times the speed for less than half the price. Definitely switching! But the main reason is, I live in SW Florida, and I just went without internet for over 2 weeks after power was restored, because hurricane Ian destroyed the cables. If fiber is buried, it should work as long as we have power. Plus Xfinity’s customer service was horrible
congratulations, you seem very happy 😁🎉🎉 Here, the most you can get is around only 100mbs, and that's if you really get it full, and the limits is I think up to 250GB or something like that 😂 Mine is just 30mbs download with a limit of 120GB ,yeah, Egypt is so harsh with internet 😅😅
I want to leave Xfinity also. But I love their cable interface. I'm paying for the triple play (phone, unlimited 1GB internet and, cable) but I never use the house phone. Only for my fax machine (which is maybe, 2 times a year.) I also have Xfinity mobile (which is great.) My devices never lose connection. But when i run speed test, I get the same results as you. I would like higher speeds. Here in Philly, our fiber optic cable company is Verizon. And they have the same prices as Xfinity. No other competition so, the customer gets the short end of the stick.
I have Xfinity also and wanted to get rid of their internet but I need to keep it for the X1 service, I'm lowering my speed to the minimum to save money on internet and keep X1 service. I'm also signed up for AT&T Fiber 1 gig for $60 for the first 12mos/unlimited internet/free installation. Will see how it goes.
So I used the Nest Wifi for all my smart devices for this reason. I didn't have to transfer anything except that one cable and everything connected right back to the network without any issue.
I guess I will be one of the very few people who has negative comments about fiber internet. I will try to brief if possible. I have fiber internet now, supposed to be 1gbs service. For the most part, web surfing is ok but not blazing fast like it claims to be, but satisfactory. The big problem is streaming. Way too damn much buffering before playing a video on almost any streaming service and that's not supposed to be like that. I have a roku device and when I had cable internet there was no buffer issues or anything. Now I have 1 gbs fiber internet and I have buffer issues like crazy. I mean what the hell!!!. Yes I was paying more for cable internet but I never had buffering issues. I have a technician with my fiber internet coming to check things out on Tuesday and see if he knows what the hell is going on. But worse case scenario I will go back to cable internet. Cheaper is not always better. But again I am probably one of the 1 out of 500 people who fiber internet might not work for them. And that's a damn shame.
Because I live in Nebraska we have Allo Communications which of course is an all fiber Network there is no cost for modem or gigaspire blast router just part of the service cost is comparable with everybody else
Hey, Brett! Always love your content. I'll be making the switch to fiber next year. Do you think my OG Google mesh wifi setup will play nicely with the fiber speed? I'm hoping I don't have to upgrade to the latest Google wifi mesh hardware. Thanks.
I upgraded my wifi router last year with a dual band, but for some reason my isp still gives me 80 down even though I pay for 200. I think I’m just gonna switch to another company or get something similar to yours. I’m fine with 2-300 but for what I’m paying I don’t even get close to 100 lol maybe I need a new router but no idea. Just for the price I might as well switch
It is really going to change some lives for those who don't have access to any fast wired options. I considered trying it out but there are a ton of videos about it already.
It's hard to see Starlink beating fiber connection, but it will surely increase broadband proliferation to many people's live for it to become commonplace
Wait, I'm in the heart of Silicon Valley and my crappy speeds are 150 down and 10 up for around $120 (cable and internet). Thanks Xfinity :( I guess I need to learn to renegotiate my old plan.
Aah! I TH-cam won’t stop suggesting I watch this (probably because I’m subscribed to you) but sheesh stop teasing me already. I swear I check at least twice a year for fiber at my house and I think I am just a bit too far away from the big city to get my hopes up. Haha. I’ll go get some cheese to go with my whine now.
Paying for 1000 GB from Verizon but getting anywhere near those speeds on my WiFi setup is nearly impossible, not sure if my extenders or router is trash, thinking of getting Google Mesh
Great video Brett - Did it cost extra for your provider to come out and run the line to your house (and bury it). I am moving into a new construction home and supposedly fiber is available in my area but I wasn't sure if there is anything the builder can do in advance to prepare the area for fiber. Thanks!
It's surprising here in Malaysia we have had FTTH (Fiber to the Home) since like 2011, and no shared FTTP (Fiber to the Post) which some countries do, where's it's like fiber to a certain point, the copper to the home However, having a bunch of ISP options is what we do not enjoy, it's pretty much a monopoly of the big 2, and both are shady. Hope that changes soon. Btw, how much did you pay to get the network infrastructure permanently affixed in the house? That's interesting as we do not have that sort of option here
In the U.K, we don't rent or pay extra for the equipment, it all comes in with the cost of your provider. Most of us use a system called Fibre to the Cabinet, which is fibre going to a roadside cabinet and then coper wires from that to the house, the router/modem is then provided by ISP. In places where there is pure fibre, that is still an all-in-one payment, even the networks that allows different providers on them. There is fibre being laid where i live at the moment, I doubt it will get to my street for a few months yet, but that is again just a one off payment of £29 a month for 100Mb/S, but they have a strange system as uploads is 10Mb/s, need to pay a extra tenner a month to get uploads the same speed as down. The fastest download is 2000Mb/s, but that will be £99 a month i get 34Mb/s on my fibre to the cabinet and to be honest that is fine for me, If I can get a good offer at the end of my contract I will stay where I am.
Oh man in Germany we didn’t run this type of cable. Because in Germany even cable and fiber internet must been clean as possible. It’s hard to explain but if you watch fiber installation in Germany you will understand
i wish i could get fibre but some how i live in the city of London yet fibre isn’t available in my area, and has been “coming to my area” for the past 3 years now
I’m getting 2gb fiber this week and I’m wondering if I hook up a 2.5gb hub switch should I connect the fiber modem to that first and hook up my eero WiFi to the hub so I can get the full speed with the wired network? I plan on getting a 2.5gb usb c adapter for my iMac so I can get get fast speed Most wired connections are gigabit on wifi hubs
Fiber!!!! I have nearly the exact setup with internet coming in then to the Nest Wifi then to an unmanaged switch. I pay for 1GB down. My wifi speeds on my Note 20 Ultra range from 200mbs to 150mbs with an access point. Those are decent speeds yet I believe it can get better. Anybody out there on hints or tips to improve those wifi speeds?
@@PhillyDjHook I've tried that about "200" times and like Brett, on my Nest router, I'm getting around 895 mbs and 850 upload. So I'm assuming the connection is great up to that point. I'm not surrounded with radio or concrete walls so I'm just not sure where I'm losing the WiFi speeds even standing next to it.
News flash. Your fiber isnt dedicated either. It's split at the hub. Before that you're sharing bandwidth with 15 or 31 other people depending on how they split the fiber. Most are a 1:32 split.
Having 1Gbit unlim over CAT5e for $6/month, about the same speedtest with 1ms ping, $70 Mikrotik hEX PoE (+ AP)... Maybe just lucky to live in Ukraine) Anyways the point is - fiber only cuts it for long distance p2p, otherwise no point. Decent SFP module would cost more than my whole setup not to mention anything more hardcore.
And it would still go back to another PON splitter. All the bandwidth is QOS and limited by the ONT MAC. People see a single fiber at their house and assume they have a dedicated connection. I like to ask where they think it is dedicated to and get some great answers.
@@Todd.T I guess people think that companies would give them dedicated internet when it costs over $20k a mile to build out. most people think it comes from a mile away when a co could be 15+ miles away.

Fiber coming soon to me, cant wait to ditch spectrum as they have such an awful connection here where I am, probably anywhere really. Speeds are consistent, ping is god awful, and online gameplay is random at best eg: shoot first die first, rbg games: getting cc'd in fights even though on your end you know you had cc resist, and its just not that cheap compared to what fiber prices are/can be
Sorry to tell you Brett, but trust me your line is split. The difference is there is pleeeenty more bandwidth to share with those around you, unlike copper internet. So you don’t notice it when everyone around you is using. That DZS ont they have installed is GPON and usually split in 1-32/64 or 128, meaning one port in the node is split either 32,64 or 128 times.... just depends on your provider.
As a cable provider for one of the top brands, your provider wasn't very good. Our modem rental is free so that we can fix it when needed. Or replace it for free. This saves the customer money. The speed were about the same, but we were a bit cheaper on the price. Our wifi rental is $5 a month. Unless you bundled, our internet only was $60 per month. After one year, it went up to $80. Our services are run through fibre, just not into the home. I have problems with your installation of the fiber. There is no ground block protecting your home. Going in through your air intake is tacky. You should be grounded to power like phone and cable. If power comes up that fiber line, everything inside connected to it is fried. The tap were your coaxial line inside the hub there is not shared!! What Joe in the house behind you doesn't effect your internet speeds in your home. This does effect providers like the phone companies. We have no data limits either.

@@Sena-pi OK, now I understand. I'm familiar with the policy as it's also used in the cellular space. Thanks for clarifying.
I pay 20€ for 5Gbit/s in Italy. I could get a 10Gbit/s fiber for 35€, but I’m fine with 5Gbit/s
Have a good time with your fiber, i hope that i'll have fiber, too hopefully soon.
Great video! Here in Cincinnati our fiber is not symmetrical. I get 500 down and 130 up.
Oh that is interesting, at least you are getting a reasonable upload.
Since I have fiber net its one of main conditions in case of moving to a different place. Great vid :)
I rent a modem from Comcast, part of the price includes unlimited data. I'm usually in the realm of 3TB a month sometimes a little more.
Im usually in the realm in 450 tb per month haha
AT&T has the newer bgw320 gateway with ONT onboard. No separate ONT. Just run the line from the outside point into the house and right to the gateway. They also have symmetrical download and upload speeds standard.
Great video and very informative. I recently had an extremely similar experience and history dealing with ISP’s and back everything you stated.
"I never could get more than fifty megabit upload, and that was pretty slow" *weeps, weeeeeeps, in rural 8megabit uploads*
Better than what I was getting in the city...
AT LEAST YOU HAVE 8 MB UPLOAD! I suffer from hughescrap with 2 mb download and .1 upload and i cant get fiber or cable in my area
I live in an area with 350 mbs download, but still only get 12 up
I live in a rural area of Mexico, around 7,000 habitants. And today, I got fiber in my home, 80 mbps download, i can’t believe rural USA towns haven’t gotten fiber.
100% Fiber in my area finally they came out and Buried the Fiber line and box on the side of the House next week ONT etc will be installed :) 1 GB DN/UP
I'm getting 300mbps at 9usd in India
Its good to see how much eastern countries like India, China and others develop alot faster than west. And also in much much cheaper rates.
Because I remember i used to watch high internet speed of west world 10 years ago... When I surf with 512kbps.
Now we also have 4g connection with unlimited calls and 2gb data per days in 3 usd per month.
Its truly mind boggling.
In Italy we have 5Gbit/s for 20€ and 10Gbit/s for 35€
Bro how is it so cheap? In lebanon 200 mbps is 200$ and its 600gb data cap 😭
@@tiziocaio8657 u are lying. There is no way. If ur telling the truth who is ur internet provider
I love my gigabit fibre line. My mesh router can’t even keep up at 800 mbps
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
7 minute video uploads! 😅 Man I’m jealous. I can’t wait for fiber to be available in my area (I’m still waiting...).
I live in rural place hopefully soon
Have fiber where I live now 🙏🏾
Very Helpful for everyone.
I'm getting att fiber this wed and will def comment with questions about it
In Montreal, I currently have a contract (commercial) with 1Gb coaxial and it's been pretty good but they've recently gone with a dedicated "smart" modem same as your Xfinity provider but they've now limited their speed to 400 Mbps so when my contract is up next year, I'll look to their competitor that does have fiber and offers up to 1.5 Gb.
1.2 terabytes and 1200 gigabytes are the same right?
@@CognizantPotato I’m an idiot. I did confirm that frontier fiber has no limit on usage. Finally installing today
@@CRASS2047 Congratulations! My local isp is finally starting to run fiber. I’m so ready to have that available.
Great for content creators !!!! Fiber !
congratulations, you seem very happy 😁🎉🎉
Here, the most you can get is around only 100mbs, and that's if you really get it full, and the limits is I think up to 250GB or something like that 😂
Mine is just 30mbs download with a limit of 120GB ,yeah, Egypt is so harsh with internet 😅😅
Oh wow! I need to make some videos on how not to use all of your data.
@@TechWithBrett yes please, that will be wonderful
@@TechWithBrett video how to not use all your data that is 4K HDR pls 😂
I just got fiber optic and it's sooooo fast!!
Uploading is amazing!
Nice video Brett. How was it transitioning your smart devices? Since you have a different router did you have to reconnect them?
Wow fantastic speeds..
Because I live in Nebraska we have Allo Communications which of course is an all fiber Network there is no cost for modem or gigaspire blast router just part of the service cost is comparable with everybody else
I would like to see how to setup your own router because I did some reading and its not just plug and play like cable is.
I live in Utah and have fiber internet with Centurylink but I’m not hitting those speeds, not even close.
Just for the price I might as well switch
nice video Brett
Awesome video. Unrelated question. For your smart home setup how long is the complete rebuilding of all your devices to the new network?
Nice video as usual, I have fiber but I believe starlink is the future of internet. Not quite there as yet though
It is really going to change some lives for those who don't have access to any fast wired options. I considered trying it out but there are a ton of videos about it already.
What is starnet?
It's hard to see Starlink beating fiber connection, but it will surely increase broadband proliferation to many people's live for it to become commonplace
Sadly that depends on the fibre provider on the upload thing... I know a few that will not give symentrical service on residential fibre.
I love my internet provider. I'm getttung 1 gigabit fiber at just 70$ a month.
I'm so jealous!
Wait, I'm in the heart of Silicon Valley and my crappy speeds are 150 down and 10 up for around $120 (cable and internet). Thanks Xfinity :( I guess I need to learn to renegotiate my old plan.
Thanks for giving
Lol that thumbnail! But great video again!
Did I do it right? 😂
@@TechWithBrett I laughed when I looked at the thumbnail😂
Good video, thanks!
Paying for 1000 GB from Verizon but getting anywhere near those speeds on my WiFi setup is nearly impossible, not sure if my extenders or router is trash, thinking of getting Google Mesh
You only get the fast speeds when you are connected via Ethernet. Wi-Fi will never be as fast as a wired connection.
Great video Brett - Did it cost extra for your provider to come out and run the line to your house (and bury it). I am moving into a new construction home and supposedly fiber is available in my area but I wasn't sure if there is anything the builder can do in advance to prepare the area for fiber. Thanks!
It's surprising here in Malaysia we have had FTTH (Fiber to the Home) since like 2011, and no shared FTTP (Fiber to the Post) which some countries do, where's it's like fiber to a certain point, the copper to the home
However, having a bunch of ISP options is what we do not enjoy, it's pretty much a monopoly of the big 2, and both are shady. Hope that changes soon.
Btw, how much did you pay to get the network infrastructure permanently affixed in the house? That's interesting as we do not have that sort of option here
Isn't that FTTN? FTTP is Fibre to the premises
The fastest download is 2000Mb/s, but that will be £99 a month
i get 34Mb/s on my fibre to the cabinet and to be honest that is fine for me, If I can get a good offer at the end of my contract I will stay where I am.
Welcome to the club 😎👍
Oh man in Germany we didn’t run this type of cable. Because in Germany even cable and fiber internet must been clean as possible.
It’s hard to explain but if you watch fiber installation in Germany you will understand

I’m getting 2gb fiber this week and I’m wondering if I hook up a 2.5gb hub switch should I connect the fiber modem to that first and hook up my eero WiFi to the hub so I can get the full speed with the wired network? I plan on getting a 2.5gb usb c adapter for my iMac so I can get get fast speed
Most wired connections are gigabit on wifi hubs
Kids got it made nowadays back when I was young an 8 gig file took a week to download and 4 weeks to upload.
Test the direct connection speed by ethernet, not the Wi-Fi speed. That should be much higher.

Sure, but I'd gladly take that over a Coaxial neighborhood split any day.
Having 1Gbit unlim over CAT5e for $6/month, about the same speedtest with 1ms ping, $70 Mikrotik hEX PoE (+ AP)... Maybe just lucky to live in Ukraine)
Anyways the point is - fiber only cuts it for long distance p2p, otherwise no point. Decent SFP module would cost more than my whole setup not to mention anything more hardcore.

Great video love bell fine but...the horrible hub 3000 that you have to use is annoying. Stuck with mediocre wireless that can't be changed
On Frontier Fios here got the gigabit plan
Dedicated fiber is very expensive. There's a optical splitter in that handhole. If you had dedicated it would cost you $500+ a month.
I would but it's not available in my area
Hopefully one day.

It was provided by the Fiber company.
Your Echo Dot had a notification.
10 GB file upload?
Try mp4 H.264 compression.
Is that for a 4k resolution?
How did you even order a fiber connection
Why the computer doesn't show the full capacity?
it's been 4 years now, that I don't have access to fiber 😔. The people I live by, next street over, have it, and I don't understand why it's not available for my home yet...
