Thank you so much for the english subtitles. It helped me a lot to have a deeper understanding of the different steps to craft the instrument I love so much playing and listening to. Çok teşekkür ederim ustam!
Dear Friends, we could translate again this beautiful documentary. I saw some mistakes in the translation and I studied different things about Ottoman Classical Music. Please contact me.
Hi Alex, I am one of the many unfortunate non Turkish speaking people trying to understand the principles of Ney construction. I understand that empirically, the length of a pipe is divided in 26 equal parts, and that part ''divisions'' 4 - 5 - 6 ---- 8 - 9 -10 represent the six hole positions and that part 14 or 15 is probably the thump hole on the back. Each of the positions represents a particular note such as: 4= Rast, 5= Dugah, 6= Kurdi e.t.c. Asiran is probably the note ''hole'' on the back, the thump hole, which usually is placed in the middle or half of the total length of the pipe. What would be useful to know in a way is what mathematical calculation is used to define the positioning of the holes. Is it the natural scale, such as the Pythagorean method of calculating the intervals or frequencies of the scale? I believe that there must be a mathematical formula that defines the hole positions of an end blown flute of a particular length and size of the bore of the tube. There is also another empirical method used to define those positions: Five finger width from the end of the flute to the first hole, then one finger width for the next two holes, two finger width for the fourth hole and then one finger width for the other two, the thump hole is two finger width from the last of the six holes closest to the middle. This is how far I have gone so far in searching for the ultimate method on the construction of a Ney. Not very far I must admit. Most of the makers of the Ney aren't very clear about it, secrets of the trade? Perhaps.
Hi Harun, Sorry, but unfortunately I don't speak Turkish and find a bit difficult to understand the principles of determining the positions of the holes for the Ney. Thus far, my understanding is that the length of the tube is divided in 26 equal parts, and that division parts 4 - 5 - 6 -- 8 - 9 - 10 are the position of the six notes ''holes''. Which division is the back/thump Asiran hole positioned? Also, I would like to ask you if I may, is there a mathematical formula which determines the hole positions? Is it the natural Pythagorean diatonic scale? I am just trying to understand how the 26 part division has been calculated? Thank you for your video and you very beautiful playing, you are a lucky man to posses such an artistic talent. Well done!
Hi Theo There is a decision note for each type of ney. For example, "Kız Ney"The decision note for the genre is "Si". When the reed length gives the "Si" note, we divide the reed into 26 equal parts and determine the note locations. The back hole is right in the middle of the reed.
@@harunklc1733 Thank you for your reply. I do understand that the root note is defined by the length of, and size of the internal circumference of the pipe, tube, reed which determines the actual pitch of a particular note. So then, divide the total length of the pipe by 26 parts, of which, parts 3-4-5 --7-8-9 are the rest of the scale 'notes'. Hopefully, I have got it right. Thank you again, and wish you all the best!
Video guzel olmus emeklerinize saglik fakat video basligina ney yapim belgeseli diye baslayip yeniden paylasirsaniz aramalarda daha cok görüntülenecektir, kolay gelsin.
Hocam Ney Neva olarak veya Rıfat Varol olarak sosyal medya, Google vs. aratirsaniz, Rıfat Hoca'min iletişim adresine ulaşabilir gerekli bilgiyi kendisinden edinebilirsiniz. Rica ederim 🙂

The perde are the positions of the Notes in a scale. Here they just mean the position of the holes.
