Dear Lyle, Hello. I really enjoy watching your clips. It's amazing that someone actually took time to record these mundane scenes, which may not mean anything to lay people, but for someone like me who used to live and work in Tokyo between 1993 and 1994, these everyday scenes really resonate profoundly like long lost memories. I wonder why you took time out to do this back in 1991. This is over 20 years ago, but they come alive as historical documentaries. Thanks again.
Hello! Thank you for writing. Tokyo has always fascinated me, and once I bought a video camera, I felt compelled to do what I could to record what life was like here. Possibly the largest motivating factor was that I like to know how things really are (and were, and why), and I felt there was a need to record Tokyo - to get away from the tourist routine and really document the city. I wanted to record the whole city actually... I fell shy of that goal, but did manage to get scenes from a wide range of locations. Incidentally, I have a few videos posted from 1993, but not many. By then my (analog) equipment was beginning to break down and I was a little burned out from being into it so intensely in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Re: "This is over 20 years ago, but they come alive as historical documentaries" - The thing that feels strange to me is how I was always focused on recording "Tokyo Today" and so it's a hard concept for me to fully grasp how that "Tokyo Today" became "Historical Tokyo"! Where *did* the time go, and when did the next generation step onto the stage? (Or something like that!)
Lyle Hiroshi Saxon So Lyle, were are you now? Are you still in Tokyo? These clips are historical treasures, and they should be preserved. My office was located in Omori - would you have any clips of the subway and street scenes in Omori? Your clips really bring me back a lot of memories and nostalgia. I am sure that for a lay person, your clips are just boring street scenes from the 1990's, but they strike me profoundly. Thanks again for your great work!
Hi! Yes, still in Tokyo and still taking video (I started taking video again around 2008, although there is one video from 2001 and a little from 2006 and s007). The difference now though, is that I'm posting unedited single-clip views, so they're quite diffent from the 1990-93 material. Thank you for your kind words. The thing about recording reality, is that most people aren't interested in it! In a journal I read written from 1859-1866, the author (Francis T Hall) wrote about an acquaintance who submitted accurate reports on Japan to newspapers overseas, but they woudln't publish the articles! They opted instead to publish sentationist nonsense! So I guess it's a curse on humanity that most people prefer fiction to the truth.... About Omori - I *think* I have something from there. The problem is, I'm not sure if I'm remembering a trip there for video in 2008-10, or the analog days of 1990-93. I'll keep an eye out for it, but no promises about exactly *when* I will be able to post it (assuming I have it). The material isn't indexed very well, so I have to find things simply by looking usually (to the playing tape that is). Thanks again for the positive feedback!
Pierce Parker Doing a quick search on my TH-cam page for Omori, I see several videos from 2012, but nothing from 1990-93. That doesn't necessarily mean I don't have some material from Omori taken back then, just that I haven't posted it yet. Anyway - I'll keep it in mind and post something if I find it.
Dear Lyle, thanks for your reply. Your clips are very profound precisely because if someone were to live and work in Tokyo, nearly all waking hours are spent on the train station platforms, on the train, walking up and down the station stairs, etc. Your clips appear like my nightmarish dreams - that was how it used to be. My life was hard and difficult in Tokyo, but I gave best years of my life there. When I pay a visit to Tokyo again on a 20-year anniversary trip back, I will be sure to look you up to express my personal gratitude. Please upload Omori street scenes soon. Thanks again.
