- I made myself the lightest steel road bike I could from a set of ultralight Japanese tubes a few years ago. I put some serious miles and made some great memories on this bike, but it's always been pretty noodlely. Now that I have the Ellis, I'm ready to strip it down and sell off the parts!

Tho you may cringe… in way CB these vids while on the trainer 😮 something really peaceful about bringing life to these steeds! Great ASMR. Nice stealie 👍🏼
excellent! Thanks!
Should have proof read that one ☝🏼 I watch these vids***
Nice to see someone being open and honest about the pros of old and new bike components. I don't know why its one way or the other for people. Also my take is that if you got to straddle then it's a saddle.
Selle Anatomica's are saddles. We see some on cruisers that hvae more padding than my front-room sofa; THOSE can be seats.
I love all the little details on your Drumlin. It's very relatable that you spent a lot of time and effort putting together an extremely nice custom build, just to find out after putting some miles on it that it's not quite what you needed it to be. We live and learn!
As a brit it will always be a saddle. A seat is for your living room. 😊
Beautiful bike. As someone who recently upgraded to electronic shifting and had to choose between SRAM and Shimano, the main reason I chose Di2 was that it uses mineral oil rather than DOT fluid for the brakes, which is much easier to deal with. New Di2 is also semi-wireless, and not having to deal with connecting the shifters by wires to the rest of the system makes it a lot easier to install. Shimano's auto-trim system also works really well. My frame is a custom titanium one, and like you I like doing endurance rides so I also had a third bottle cage mount put in on the underside of the downtube. I don't use it often, but it's nice to have it when I need it.
That was relaxing to watch and listen.
I took a 2 week frame building course at United Bicycle Institute back in 2008..Tig welded steel..I wish I had taken the brazing course instead,The teacher was Paul Sadoff of Rock Lobster bikes..I’m not a good welder but it was a great experience 🚲
well done sir 👍
we all love jazz and stuff / tbh it's fine to just let things at is, real ASMR
Man I want that Thomson layback seatpost, I have a few of them now in my collection
A moment of silence please, while Taps plays for the "Drumlin" special #1...😮💨 Please do a video on the bike swap meet....
Lovely bike.
If it costs $20 bucks it's a bike seat.....Over $100 bucks it's a saddle....
lol is there a term for +200$?
@@zwicker5585 sucker
@@JamesBargar any brooks or selle is over 200$ Canadian dollars. some 3d printed saddles are over 300$. What a crazy response...
@zwicker5585 I know. I have a couple of Brooks saddles myself, but I've settled into the Bontrager Boulevard as my main ride. I still drool over Brooks leather. 😛
Im building out a VYNL frame crit racer right now and this video is pretty helpful.
I like the "Drumlin" graphics on the downtube! The font is similar to what was used for Rene Herse, but locating it on the top of the tube is similar to the Alex Singers that I've seen. As a tall skinny guy, I suspect I'd be pretty happy with that tube set.
2 kilos for the frame plus the fork is really light!😯
Bars look like Ritchey Venturemax. Got a bit of a angle on them, not a lot of drop, a neat little ergo bump. Probably next on my list to try out after I recover from my most recent set of projects & donations lol.
Were's the iconic wood bike-shop chair?
Superb
Bedankt
Seat vs saddle, summary. A saddle is a type of seat.
You can put a saddle on a seatpost but have never put a seat on a saddle post.
Seat is something to rest upon, the seat supports the majority of your weight
A saddle is a seat for a riders, with a significant weight supported by the legs.
There are more mechanical concepts such as saddle fits upon a convex surface for attachment or support.
Whatever you call it get it between your legs and ride it. I'm just trying to figure out if my Schwinn sting ray had a banana seat or a banana saddle
A lovely bike!
I've had my eye on the Thorn Club Tour for a while now. I'm sure it can handle three bottle cages, but I'm guessing it's a fair bit heavier than what you're after.
Is it a seat? Is it a saddle? It's Seattle.
I ride a 43cm frame. Lucky if I can do two bottle cages. My mountain bike barely fits one small one. My carbon trek madonne 43cm could only fit one. My older Serotta fits two.
Seats are for sitting, saddles are for riding
I think of seats having support for one's back. Unless it's a motorcycle. (Or a Schwinn Stingray) Then it's a seat. Sometimes with a sissy bar.
It's a seat, in a seat clamp, on a seat post, in a seat tube, connected to seat stays.
It’s a saddle attached to a seat post. Saddle is something you straddle, like a horse saddle.
@@MnBicycleCommuter And a seat is something you sit on. It's like you're correcting me for calling a rectangle a square. Once everyone starts saying saddle post and saddle tube I'll call it a saddle.
Let me rephrase my comment. I call it a saddle because one straddles it. You can call it anything you like. I was not correcting you. My apologies.
BUT it's still a saddle. A seat is a generic term for something you sit on, saddle is specific. An armchair is also a seat.
@@peterwillson1355 If i said look at that car would you say well technically it's a sedan?
Ritchey comes close. The bars look like Ritchey Vernturemax.
"Saddle". Much more manly/cowboy/Yellowstone vibe. "Seats" are in movie theaters.
UNBIKED! Time for you to make some stickers!
Nice, I think I’m done with plastic bikes! I’ve wanted to try electronic but I still haven’t taken the plunge.
Seated in the East, saddled my way west.
Seat or saddle? Dunno...
But we do know it's wonderful music underscoring your work. Please tell us as you gab at Gibs who is accompanying you!!!!
Please of great bike farmer!
DI2 is way less finicky. Easier install, easier to tune.
You sit ON a saddle, you sit IN a seat. It's relaxing to enjoy a video like thst.
It's gotta be a seat. Saddles are for horses.
I half expected a SS flat bar with 28mm build to hang.. still sorta do.. that hanger is the wall of shame as it sits.. I'd like to see that Drumlin sold off to somebody who wants it. put the Trek back on the wall
"Ewwww gross!" MU-UM! I'M BEING ATTACKED BY A STRANGER ON THE INTERNETTTTT!
XD
1 thinks, good sir; detail the... "urine" out of it as a show frame or a centrepiece? I don't know why but in my head painting all the lugs cream ... [Chef's OK hybrid emoji]
I liked when you laid it out on the rubber mat, that as a display case or counter/table top art piece mayhaps. Gather parts that look cool or just artisan, they wouldn't have to work, just pretty, or intricate, or interesting.
That is crazy light for a steel frame that big! I wonder what they frame and fork weigh separately? I was thinking of building something with that tubset as and would be interested to know.
Who is your preferred/favorite custom steel frame builder? You've inspired me to have a grail steel frame built so I can finish it.
I don't like bikes as much as I once did... but I really appreciate a hand made steel frame. ... I loath the E Industry and most e components. I got into fixed, and adore the Track bikes. Direct drive monsters and some pursuit rigs are straight Michaelangelo artwork... I'm no longer a fan of Trek, nor much of the Industry, except that desire to weld a nice unique steel frame to hang my track goodies on.
You mentioned not finding the tubing stiff enough, but how much do you think the upside-down seat tube contributed? Would it have ridden more like you wanted with the butting at the bottom?
Probably
Brain Kefimers speed vagon! NOOOO! RIP Drumlin 1😢
Cannot watch a BikeFarmer video without thinking about Warren Zevon.
Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner?
2boring2watch!
But love your channel!
Question:u got a 12speed with rim
Brakes?how wide r the dropouts?
I do have bunch of 130dropout bikes and wanna put 12speed electric shifting on m cause of thump and hand/wrist pain with reg. Cable shifters, but its hard2find 12speed casettes fitting on 130hubs!
that's a really cool ride (rather, was). I love weird decisions like a 3rd water bottle holder on a non-touring frame. Out of curiosity, what was it that made you go for kaisei tubing entirely, compared to other tubings out there? do you think mix and matching tube brands would have saved the bike?
Where did the thrift store chair go?
Yeah, that isn't Woody Chairylson.
It’s a saddle because it mounts on the saddle post which goes in the saddle tube. 😂
You got it!
It's called a seat post not a saddle post
Seat or saddle?...my ten year old son blurted out "it's a chair!"
Sad that such a nice looking frame is destined for wall art. While you are tall you look quite fit and not that heavy. I'm not familiar with the Kaisei tube set, is it super thin like the old Reynolds 753?
it's not sad www.google.com
Is the tubeset Kaisei 019?
I love how you complain about people who care too much about weight in other videos but nevertheless you mention at almost all parts of your custom bikes that they are "super light"! 😅
Do you really love it, or are you missing the nuance? I didn't build an ultralight bike because I thought it would improve performance or make my rides a more pleasurable experience. I built it as a challenge of my skills and to test my creative abilities. I built it as a functional, novelty bike from the start. I don't "complain about people who care too much about weight". I "complain" that people care too much about weight for the wrong reasons, usually external reasons, primarily the marketing gimmicks easily consumed by bike culture.
@@bkefrmr: Honestly, you answered in a way that could be construed as a reason to complain in car culture as well. Like, for instance, all the "go-fast" gimmicky products that promise things like, "Bolt this on to your engine, get +20% horsepower!"
When the fact is, most of those products are nothing more than snake-oil products the gullible buy, "because it sounds cool." And from the sounds of it, "lightweight components" in the bike world are the same kind of thing the "go-fast" car components are in the car world.
Because unless somebody has a very thorough and intimate knowledge of physics, including engineering, most lightweight components are not going to be used in the proper application, let alone on the proper bike.
@@bkefrmr tldr: NICE BIKE!
yes, I absolutely missed this point sorry, to be honest. I just wanted to point out the contradiction and make a joke after you made so many jokes about weight bike fetishists. I can relate to that because I also appreciate stylish and elegant bikes but I'm also someone who always preaches that weight doesn't make a big difference. But the basics of physics don't seem to interest most people as much as the dream of being able to buy ultra superpowers, gram per gram, dollar per dollar.
It’s a saddle! Because it’s on an iron horse.
On the wall... come on, I will give you 25$ for it!😅
saddle
Without fenders, does that extra water bottle get dirty? I guess you just wipe it off before you drink from it.
I just wipe the cow shit in my armpit before sucking on it again
@@bkefrmr We have some bike paths here that are shared with the Amish buggies. I was a bit nervous the first time I took a swig from my water bottle after unsuccessfully dodging all of the used horse fuel.
how much does it weigh
Watch the video
People who call it a saddle probably also use words like bidon and gilet. Just sayin’
Cool bike but this is not a regular bicycle for normal people.
If your roadbike is boring , youre riding it too slow.
I understand your point about SRAM wireless, but God, they're f***ing ugly... Truely gives me eye cancer 🙈 Those bulky battery housings alone should be a felony, especially on a slim bike like this one. There is absolutely no elegance to them whatsoever. Just LOOK at the front derailleur! 🤮 But they're perfect for those modern aerobike abominations...
A bike like this deserved better. Maybe an older campy record 10-speed in silver and carbon, that would be nice.
