Just a note about BTS’s donation of $88,000. That doesn’t sound like a lot of money nowadays, but to put it in perspective, that was a full third of all the money BTS made that year. They were starting to gain success at this time, but they came from a near bankrupt company. It took quite a while for them to start making what we would think of as celebrity money.

My daughter and I were in Korea at the time of the tragedy and were gobsmacked at how incredibly badly the whole situation was handled. As a parent my heart broke for those parents just trying to get something done. We were there again a couple of years later and to this day, I can remember standing on the side of the road in Seoul in the pouring rain, watching parents, families and friends of those children who lost their lives, marching seeking justice. I cried like a baby and that image has remained imbedded in my mid to this day. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about it.

I guess you now understand why this song and video holds a special place in every ARMY’s purple heart. Those poor kids died because they were told to stay put, and being the good Korean children that follow orders, they perished. BTS is always on another level. There content has meaning. This is why I get pissed off when they get treated like a bubble gum boy band by the western world. They deserve so much better, and that is why ARMY is soooo protective of them. I will never stop defending BTS from the offensive comments that are thrown their way.

Right on the money...especially when they get that label of being about fluff. I get sad when people only know them by their couple of english songs. Let's face it....those were a bit about fluff, but it was done purposefully because it was done during lockdowns where people had enough of heavy worries weighing them down and needed something light to raise spirits. I always want to say "these songs are great, but please don't make a judgement on whether you like BTS or not on these songs". Those english songs were some of the very few they didn't write themselves.

I do want to say one thing, Nesto. There's no "wrong" way to interpret art, and that includes BTS' songs. They do infuse certain meanings in their songs, especially within the BU, but each ARMY can feel connected to certain BTS songs for different personal reasons because we as individuals have different POVs, backgrounds, etc 🥰

    • @leahwarburton
      @leahwarburton 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

The members themselves have said that whatever meaning you find in their songs is valid. And they are often amazed, and impressed, at the way people find to interpret their songs.
I always say their songs have at least three meanings - The one they intended when they wrote it; The one contained in the MV (which may complement the song, or have it's own meaning entirely); and the one you find for yourself (based on your own life experiences). Though I have found multiple meanings to some songs/MVs, depending on how you look at them.
But one thing stands true - there is always something deeper than is immediately apparent on the surface.

At times, it can be absolutely mind-boggling how much thought they put into their projects. On the surface, a song or mv can be catchy/cute/cool, but they leave it up to the audience to decide whether to explore the deeper meaning. If it's any consolation the ship's crew members were later convicted of various crimes ranging from violating marine laws and abandoning ship to homicide. The captain for example is currently serving a life sentence for homicide. The ferry company CEO was found shot in the head, presumably by his own hands.
    A few other important points:
    - Three crew members actually chose to stay and rescue the kids but lost their lives in doing so. I think it's important to separate them from the rest of the crew and remember them with the honour they deserve. 💜
    - Two volunteer recovery divers also lost their lives in the aftermath; one in an underwater accident and one by his own hands due to the horrors he witnessed while down there.
    - It wasn't the usual captain of the ship working that day. He had raised concerns about the safety onboard and was removed because of it. So the company knew but didn't care.
    - We sometimes forget that South Korea is a very young democracy (since 1987) and there is definitely a lot of remnants of the oppressive past still at play in their politics. But BTS have managed to walk that fine line where they address injustice and serious issues but they do it in such a subtle, artistic manner that they've gotten away with it.
    - What truly breaks my heart about this explanation video though is the thought of the fact that footage and photos from inside the ferry was taken by students and sent from their mobile phones shortly before they perished 💔

True. If our US divers would have been allowed to facilitate a rescue operation there would have been no casualties. But government egos rejected the help...until it became a recovery operation. Then they asked for US Navy and private divers to recover those lost. Then even divers lost their lives in attempting to navigate the small spaces. 💜

💜🙏Thank you for sharing your heartfelt reaction to Spring Day..... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 3 years ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having su!cidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.
The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and most of the crew fled the ship in the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to "not move and stay still" playing on a loop through the onboard broadcast on the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority.
The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was illegally overloaded.
Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...
3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye.
3 crew members stayed behind to try and help the children, they all lost their lives, along with one of the rescue divers. Also, one of the civilian rescue divers later committed su!cide after having to recover so many childrens bodies, knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped.
As a parent, I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own government would perpetrate and then cover up such an incident... jailing dissenters for protesting. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people in the public eye (reporters, artists, etc) put on a Govt blacklist for speaking about it.
BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims in 2014 when the tragedy occurred. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know what decent and good people they are.
The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But the song itself is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They were singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world was longing for a spring day. Spring Day has never left the music charts. To this day, it is right that this song is still in the top 100 charts.... 7 years later, as this song still speaks to people everywhere.
Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day reaction video.... with posting your reaction you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy.
Rotten Mango has done an amazing documentary on the tragedy.

BTS' three all English songs, Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance, are the only BTS songs that are really pure bubblegum pop style and that's because they were trying to cheer people up and give them strength through the pandemic. And even with that, Permission to Dance has sign language in it, encouraging the deaf and hard of hearing to dance along with everyone else. The very first single that they released addressed young people who followed their parents dreams for them because they didn't have any dreams of their own. No More Dream, Baepsae, N.O, Spinebreaker, Am I Wrong, and other songs that all address such serious topics. ARMY says that BTS saves lives with their music and we mean that quite literally. There is a reason why ARMY is so strong and protective of BTS and you're beginning to understand what that reason is.

Now you understand why Spring Day is the Queen 💜. BTS also did a song called ‘Am I Wrong’ just a couple of months before they released Spring Day which is one of their most known political songs. In the song, they attack the Park administration and specifically, the Minister of Education/Culture who at one point said that people are nothing more than “dogs and pigs”. BTS was surely not as careful with the message and that meant almost getting blacklisted by the government since they found out about the song. Fortunately, that never happened since President Park and her entourage have been arrested soon after.

This song has not left the charts since it came out and now you know why. It’s also why it was huge that it charted to #1 here in the US for the 1st time when the remaining members entered the military. If you delve a little deeper into the 2 books mentioned and the story of The Little Match Girl, you’ll find even more symbolism true to RM and Suga’s characters (and the rest of the guys). People need to understand what a HUGE risk they took in doing this, so thank you for making this video. You’re right, here, they wouldn’t have been able to stop people from rescuing, look at 9/11. There, they used the societal norms of doing what you’re told, falling in line, hierarchy, and not going against the grain to ensure the deaths of innocent children. Last thing, when you look at some of the merch BTS has designed, look at Jimin’s purple sweatshirt. In YELLOW letters, on the front and back, it says “you never walk alone”. Embroidered on the hood in yellow letters it says “seven with you”. He could’ve chosen any color in the world for the lettering, but chose yellow with that exact quote/wording.

      They did.
They just did not have enough men.
There had been demonstrations that day and there were people doing security for the SK president - who lived in the city instead of the Blue House.
Nevermind that helping was difficult. People tried to get people out of that crush at the end of the small street.
Emergency responders had a hard time to get to everyone because a lot of people hadn't noticed anything wrong, were still celebrating and clogging up the street.
Nevermind that people pushing to move faster are the ones responsible since there was no way to get out of the way.
      People suffocated standing up.
The thing is no one talks about the 1000s of times where it works and nothing happens - but at the 1001th time will cost lives.
It was unfortunately a big crowd going in 2 directions in a tight passage from the train station to the main street where people celebrated - which happens every weekend - sometimes more and sometimes less.
I think the first judgments in court were this spring for those who failed their duty.

But the first calls were at a time were it was beginning to get crowded *not* when the crush was already happening.
If not for the extra-pushing it may never have escalted the way it did.
Would officers preventing/coordinating with someone on the other side helped reduce the risk?
      Yes.
When the crush happened and people began to notice - because you do not have the air to scream - it was already too late for a lot of people to get to the right place to help.
Civilians tried to rip people out.
The right time to interfer is unfortnuately easily missed.
But the problem was too little people because men-power was down to begin with it seems.
Emergency personal had problems to get where they needed to be.

If ARMY seems passionate about learning about the meaning behind their music it’s because it’s deep. Spring Day is one of those songs. Korea is a society where respect for your elders is expected so when told to stay in place on the ferry, many students listened and obeyed leading to their deaths as the ferry rolled over and capsized. Many were texting and calling their parents as they waited for rescue. It wasn’t until 3 years later that the ship was recovered and the remaining bodies with it although I believe a few were never found. The captain and most of the crew took off their uniforms and were among the first rescued. It’s a tragedy and the song has never left the Korean music charts since its release. BTS were very brave for even addressing the tragedy in any way in the MV although the song itself was written to address the loss of and missing past friends. I’m sorry this was as difficult for you as a father as it is for all ARMYS. You will never think of Spring Day the same way again. Borahae 🫰🏻💜🇨🇦

This is why everyone wanted you to see this video. Never to exploit a tragedy. But, literally, to understand THIS is classic BTS~using their music, their voice, to speak out against and stand up to injustices. Shows how much depth they truly put into their music/MV/content. They didn’t draw attention to themselves…they drew attention to these issues. They don’t disclose their donations…ARMYs find out about them through news, etc. BTS is not a group…it’s a movement. They were created to be music for healing-literally. Why ARMYs are so infatuated, inspired, feel familial, and loyal!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

It is crazy some of the things people think or say to
Parents that have lost a child, especially in America. The support for the first few weeks is great but after a month or so, you are told (sometimes bluntly, that you need to get over it). Although I know that it was not meant to be in a negatively mean way but I have been told (numerous times) that at least my son was only 8m old when he died so I was not as attached had he been older so my pain must be less. As I look back, I see it in a much different way than I did in the first few years after he died. I now see it as more to the speakers of those who have told me this. Personally, I feel like Americans do not deal with death and loss as openly as other countries. I think when people say this it is
More to their uncomfortable feelings as to losing a child. Almost it is their hope that the loss must be less because he was so young. I use to be very self conscious of bringing him up or when asked how many kids I have and I would get stuck on if I should say 3 or 2 as I have 2 younger daughters. Now I just say 3 and I talk about him all the time. Even my ex in-laws told me that first Xmas after he died (8m laster) that I was morbid to still be sad or to bring him up. I do think, or at least I hope, over the last 27 years we have become more open and understanding about loss of loved ones and although we never “get over it” the extreme pain of those early years lessens and the positive memories begin to bring you joy again but it’s the understanding that everyone’s healing timeframe is different and should be respected. Sending all my love and hugs to everyone who has lost a loved one. 🤗💜

When BTS returns, I hope they continue with how they released albums. They would give ARMY easter eggs and puzzles to solve for the up and coming project. The other thing I appreciate about RM/BTS, is they get ARMY to continue to read books. In this video they mention a short story called: The People who walked away from Omelas. Which is a story of the weakest suffer, to let others live well. Spring Day also mentions; Snowpiecer, which is a great movie about the class system. He introduced to this movie so we could understand. RM/BTS knows how to get ARMY to analyze, to use our critical thinking skills.

When asked about the meaning behind Spring Day they have said (I would have to look for the direct quote) that it was about the tragedy but also how when we lose people it is OK when we can't let go that we keep them in our hearts with us forever. I lost my husband in 2013 it broke me. He was my soulmate and we should have had years more. Bur I had to stay on my feet for my kids. Finding BTS helped me put my heart back together. I really always thought of Spring Day in the context of the Seowl tragedy... until the 11th anniversary of his death this April. I was driving hom3 after work and BTS was playing of course... and just as I went by where we met... Spring Day came on. It all clicked in place and I had to pull over and cried like a baby. It's a song about loss and longing. Boshipda means BOTH I miss you and I want to see you. What is harder than longing to see someone you will never see again. I made BTS reels/shorts a long time ago for fun but hadn't for awhile just because of being busy. But that day I went home; opened my editing software and made a reel using Spring Day. It has had over a half million views between FB and IG and it doesn't have a picture of a single BTS member. It's just pictures of mc" our kids. Fellow ARMYs (as usual) were so supportive. Ever since then I've gone back to making BTS reels again. It's fun and creative. It's also a challenge to make everything fit in 90 seconds.

When i first heard this song it touched my heart. When i found out what had happened, it broke my heart. As a parent myself, the thought of losing my child in any situation gets me anxious and worried. I wanted to hug each and everyone of those family members who lost their child in this tragic sinking. Since the government officials family weren't on board and died, they didn’t really care, and it shows in their actions. From what I have heard, other countries were offering to come and help, but they were denied, stating that they could handle it and it was under control. Horrible, horrible disregard of human life 😢 💔

I hope u now realise that BTS is not just a boy band, yes some of their songs are just fun dance tracks but a true Army will recognize their their lyrics have far far deeper meanings. And its for this reason that we support and respect them as artists. Unfortunately the West (mostly) wont acknowledge that (Grammy ignoring their beautiful lyricism) so block them from their main streams and then ppl like me and many new Army lived under their rock not ever knowing about BTS, only by chance i found BTS in 2021 seeing a 30 second clip on tik tok. But it was enough for me to want to know who they were and i gooogled them. Spring Day always makes me cry as my best friend passed with cancer. I miss her.. i miss her💜💜💜

When I first heard this song and found out the reason behind the video I was completely dumbfounded! Not only that it happened but the fact that we never heard anything about here! I searched on UTube the Sewol Fairy and what I watched completely broke my heart! The videos from the students inside the fairy are literally sitting in their cabins that are leaning and being told to stay put! The boys are talking about what they should do! And then you actually see the captivating and crew members getting off the boat and leaving the students behind! They are telling the rescuers that everyone is off! Not all the students parished! Some actually went against what they were told and to this day are living with survivors guilt! So heartbreaking!

Rescue crew usually rescue women and children first. I suppose the captain thought with all those children on board he would not get rescued on time.

I vaguely remember a news blurb saying that a ferry sank, no reports of the dead that I remember. There was no follow up, certainly no mention of it being children. The corruption and stupidity of not saving the kids is just enraging.

Thank you for reacting to this and for showing so much love and care. I was teased and called a "helicopter" parent for being protective of my two boys, lol. I didn't care because their safety and happiness were the most important thing to me and always will be. Now you are starting to understand why ARMY loves them so much and is very protective. But we also want to spread their words and talent to as many as we can because they deserve it. And you are also starting to get how most of their songs do have much deeper meanings or were based on a book or philosopher or social injustices, etc... And some are just fun or special for ARMY. Thank you again and Borahae 💜💜💜
