I can't figure out why use the input events rather than putting it into step. Isn't it just better to have it check every frame and have it meet conditions as well like "if keyboard_check() && place_meeting() { }" For some type of pressing to delete the object

It depends on what you need to do - remember checking everything 60 times a second can get expensive computation wise and slow your game down.
