      @@99zxk I've run hole in the oak! It's great. Same design sensibilities. Super easy to run. You can easily get 2-4 sessions out of it with the party leaving and coming back. And the way these large-ish "old school" dungeons are written, they live and breath. You can easily make changes in between sessions to show how the dungeon reacts to the parties meddling.

    I've been branching out from D&D and have been getting a lot of starter boxes and WotC needs to step up their game when it comes to their starter boxes. Essentials Kit was alright, but compared to PF2e and CoC's (among others), I was pretty underwhelmed with this one.

    • @CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen
      @CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PF2e starter box is EXCELLENT for first time players & DMs. It really makes the D&D boxes look bad.

    • @PascalPflugfelder
      @PascalPflugfelder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen Well just by the price point the PF2 box is twice the price of the new D&D starter set. while it contains more goodies and elements of character creation its adventure is just a dungeon, and you need to shell out more money if you want to experience the game beyond lvl 2. But I agree that the solo adventure and the quality of the items are great, its just that you get more bang for your bucks in terms of adventures with D&D ones.

    • @CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen
      @CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PascalPflugfelder sure, you get more for your money, but like I said-for first time players, and especially first time DMs, PF2e beginner box is much easier to manage. There aren't 50 possible side quests to get confused and stuck on. There aren't a hundred NPCs to keep track of either. Sure, you get more adventure for less money, but LMoP can get very confusing very quickly for a table of entirely new players-frustrating even. If an experienced DM is running it-sure, but I think it's overwhelming for a true 'starter' set.

    Watching the video I had numerous thoughts about what I would do differently were I designing such a product but I was also reminded that WotC is just never going to produce an edition of D&D that I don't have to house rule so heavily it is basically a different game. Having said that, my biggest takeaway here is that it's just WEIRD to hear you, Professor DM, talking about D&D without the lens of your own house rules focusing your words. That is to say, I truly appreciate your take on D&D and how it's much more in line with what I want than with what WotC produces.

      You never have to house-rule it if you never buy it. 😁 There are many Independent OSR rules sets out there. And as Gygax once said, the big secret of D&D is you don't need the rules. “It’s a simple process, really.” In hindsight it’s looking simpler, but I have found it anything but simple. The character sheet is a wall of gibberish, and numbers come from where? I think now, that Stormwreck is a good starter kit, but the one thing missing from all of the boxes and books is a step by step cheat sheet listing what to do on a turn. Just reading the instructions is like trying to put whole carrots and potatoes back together out of veggie stew.
    And yes, cardboard standees would have been nice. I printed off some of the locations, most importantly the observatory, by tiling sheets on my printer so we had a “board” and printed standees from a website. Much easier to keep track of things, especially for new and young players.

    Rolling the dice is where the excitement and drama happen! Rolling for initiative might seem like busy work instead of fun, but when you get the drop on the bad guys and slit their gizzards before they can make a meal out of you, that's fun. Initiative is another chance to "win", just like hitting their Armor Class or rolling lots of damage. You just want to be sure you don't get stuck doing it all the time. It will lose it's impact if it takes too long. If a fight is going long, it is okay to have one side or the other run away or surrender. Prisoners can be ransomed or maybe even hired! And characters who "lose" might get a fun chance to escape later on... and get revenge!

    Fear not, Ranger! Nice call back to the cartoon indeed, Professor! I like attaching skills to the relevant attribute. i think that is far more intuitive. Stat blocks belong with the relevant encounter a well. At this point, I think the blue boxes are as iconic as fireball in their own way, so I am a little more forgiving than you are on that point.
    Looking forward to perhaps a Gencon video for all of us who could not attend, perhaps? Great video as usual, thank you!

    I have been recently been reading the Cypher system and while it is a very different mindset there are some things that it just does better. The character sheets are more streamlined, the Target Numbers are easier to figure out, the monster blocks are easier to read.
    But having said all that, I think that D&D will always hold a special place in my heart. I started D&D back in the 80s and I think if I were to update my books I would likely go OSR, I think the current version of D&D puts the details in the way of the game, it is good to have details, it is just where they are on the sheets etc. is just very counter-intuitive to me. When it is time for characters to take an action it feels like we are searching through a library just to get to what they need to roll to succeed.

    • @TheLyricalCleric
      @TheLyricalCleric 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do it! Prof. DM has a video where he talks about having to strip DnD down to its fundamental elements as a kid and it shows how the nub of the roleplaying game still functions without all the trappings and arguably functions better. I know I would enjoy a game more where I had my stats and my gear and whatever I could do in the game would be derived from all that. Class abilities are great, but unless you’re in combat they sit there on the sheet and do nothing.
      “Survival,” meanwhile, sits on most character sheets and acts as a “get out of trouble” button for anything not-combat. Stuck in a cave? Survival. Lost in the woods? Survival. DC to escape the consequences of my own stupidity? Roll survival. I’d rather have to work to earn my survival-tying a net is dexterity, but because I’m a former sailor I get proficiency in it. Why? Sailors tie knots. Duh. It’s not on the sailor background, but it’s in my estimation of my character’s background. Thus, because I am a sailor and I am lost in the woods, I can make a net to trap game to eat for the night so I don’t get exhausted trying to get my ass out of the woods. Would Goodberry have made it easier to spend the night here? Yes, if any of us had rolled up characters who cast it, rather than all playing fighters because we want more feats than sense. I’d rather use my ingenuity to get out of a jam than a technicality in the rules anyway.

    • @cybermerlyn2
      @cybermerlyn2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLyricalCleric I have tried to be more "rulings vs rules" with my players and instead of asking "Do you have that skill" I have started asking "How do you want to do that", and figuring out what stat that would apply to increase the difficulty (slightly) if they do not have a "skill"... I do not want to ever say "No", I want to ask how they would do it and adjust the dice as needed. See "XDM X-Treme Dungeon Mastery" if you have any questions. Great book, thank you, Professor DungeonMaster for that recommendation, that is a must read.

    I think they didn’t opt for having a flowchart style skill layout because of the obscure rule where you can replace the relevant modifier for a skill with another modifier if the situation calls for it. For example Performance is charisma based, but A DM may also ask for a dexterity Performance check.
    I do think that the flow chart style is better for new players though. I’m just explaining why I think they did what they did. However, I’m pretty sure there are Adventure League sheets that have the flow chart layout, so 🤷‍♂️

    Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I don't like all these different starter sets for 5e d&d. It would be better if they did it like Mentzer where every set had new rules, but here they just slap a new adventure into the box and call it a day. If you're gonna do that, why not just release the adventure by itself? Why create a whole new $20 set? I think the first 5e starter set was just fine.

      Outside of (maybe) the new art, this new set is worse than the Lost Mines of Phandelver. When you compare it to the previous boxed sets in other editions, it gets worse. Compare the snappy blue dragon random adventure in this set to In Search of the Unknown, Keep on the Borderlands, or even the adventure with Aleena the cleric. Compare the cheaply made books in this boxed set to what you got in boxed sets (in terms of books, maps, and handouts) of previous editions of D&D...Yeah, not a favorable comparison. At least the previous Lost Mines of Phandelver is $12-$13 on Amazon now. That's a better purchase for players wanting to learn 5e.

      @cookiedough69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@opaqued2039 I agree with you. I started off with Lost mines and although it is great for the price, I must say that the Aleena the cleric adventure is probably the best way to teach someone how to play. What makes me kind of upset is that D&D now is basically just a cash cow for Wizards, with not much thought and love put into the products. They just pump out new starter sets and tons of supplements you don't need or care about and still expect you to pay top dollar for it, whereas if you just get creative you really only need the starter set and players handbook. The only reason they keep making them is because there's tons of uncreative fans keep eating it up with a spoon and ask for more. TSR was the golden era of d&d.

    • @opaqued2039
      @opaqued2039 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cookiedough69 I started with the Red Box. The Aleena adventure (and all the of Choose Your Own Adventure books I read in school--including the Endless Quest books) made up the template I used for new players and solo adventures that I ran.
      I would add that if WotC cared about making as much money as possible, they would do one of two things (maybe both). They would mine the treasure trove of material from previous editions (content, materials sold, etc.), and/or they would create new settings and ideas to rival those of earlier editions. They do not have the staff to come up with new ideas, and instead of creating quality products that mimic or represent the classics of past editions, they issue warning labels (or apologies) and/or mock the players of those past editions. They sell cheaply made overpriced boxed sets that are easily seen for what they are when compared to what came out before (both in terms of content and material). This approach never made sense to me. If there were products that were still being read, referenced, or purchased 40-50 years later, I'd want to emulate that longevity.
      I have a theory that WotC is making their D&D revenue in selling memorabilia--t-shirts, towels, souvenirs, blankets, notebooks, toys, collectibles, etc.--from previous editions, and no one will remember anything from this era in terms of modules, settings, etc. No one will remember this boxed set. I think even WotC's own stats show that most players of this edition are short term players that move on fairly quickly.

    Great review and suggestions for keeping group size down. I am currently running a game with 3 players, and that is a great number. I find that most new DMs (myself included way back in the 4th grade) take on too much, especially with regards to group size.
    The good: Much better and consistent art. Fairly generic set of mediocre dice.
    The bad: Not enough material. Crap materials compared to previous boxed sets. Fairly generic set of 6 (not 7) mediocre dice. Barely anything regarding adventures/scenarios, encounters, or anything that could make up an initial campaign. No one will remember this set (except maybe as another cash grab). At least the first starter set had the Lost Mine of Phandelver. That's a playable adventure and one of the best of 5e (which also says a lot about 5e...).
    The trouble for WotC is that previous boxed sets included Moldvay Basic and the Red Box. Compare what's included now--from a billion dollar corporation--to those classic boxed sets. Compare the scenarios in this modern Starter Set (or the previous two) to Keep on the Borderlands or the Isle of Dread or the adventure with Aleena the Cleric and Bargle the Infamous or B1 In Search of the Unknown.
    Any new DM would be better served with products from previous editions or just hitting Amazon and picking up the first 5e starter set that contains The Lost Mine Phandelver for half the price. Also, every young or new player should pick up a set of plain, opaque Chessex dice from their local comic book/hobby shop for $3-$4 dollars. Just saying.

    It can be tricky to learn to be a DM. The "safe" way to teach yourself is reading the boxed text to players when they get to the location. This is easy to understand and follow. But the first thing a new DM will want to learn to do after that approach is making it more lively! Reading a box of text, even reading it with emotion and drama, is still just "story in a can". Learn to bring the story to life by improvising! How does it smell? Is it cold or hot, windy or still? Are there creepy shadows or glaring lights? Try to breathe life into it. And if things seem a little slow... have monsters suddenly appear and attack!
