It is genuinely a great film. It is inscrutable but never out of reach. IT really is 2001: a space odyssey. Unbelievable movie that holds up ridiculously well to repeated viewings.
late 90s-early 2000s youth oriented japanese films were great, a real and overlooked golden age of cinema. Everything about this particular movie is of its time yet timeless.
It's been years since i've watched this film. I have already forgotten how the plot goes but the moment the music soundtrack plays, i suddenly got nostalgic. Nostalgic about the past when i was still young and struggling with my mental health. I used to play the soundtrack album back when i wanted to calm myself down and it always helps. Coming back here, it's been a trip and life's a little bit better now and its just nice to go back to these small things that reminds you of your old self.
I saw this film when I lived alone in Tokyo in my mid teens. I was so lonely there and I watched this film over and over.. haha. Silly now, but at the time I loved coming home and escaping into it.
This film made me feel a lot. Wanted to appreciate life more, there's more depth to my understanding in life. Made me wanna go back in time and sometimes not exist
Every College should have this as an educational video on violence. Beautifully acted, very subtle,non-pretentious. Just life!! Another one to add to my movie catalogue, right next to Larry Clarks "Kids"
When I listen to this, it brings my deceased grandma and mouse to my mind. I don't know why, I just feel like they are floating in the air near me, gazing at me gently, but i still cannot touch them...
Awesome as always. I just found out that Debussy's daughter was affectionately called "ChouChou".. maybe this is how the name appeared in the film title? :)
All about Lily Chou-Chou is a awesome picture. Great represent of japan culture and that what is evolve into modern world. Great picture. I really love that movie.
a friend showed me that movie in Tokyo two years ago. I couldn't remember the title and i just woke up with this sound in my head "it's tchou...It's tchou tchou". Although just Chou chou . And there it is...beauty invading my brain again...
I think it's mixture; a flow between sad...but not totally, and play a bit feature of happiness... Yeah, it's really really really hard to describe how I feel... Even in the end; the 'dead' scenes 'somehow' look happy for me (since the character feels no more pain - or discover their own meaning of life...or something) It's........a film that we lack the words to say :)
i walk to the end of the road, i open my lips, it all comes out, long and sounding raspy, a taste of blood left in my throat, i am out of breath, sobbing, it feels good somehow, a moment empty, then, i fill up, a force i know magnetic, heavy in my shoes, unmovable, i stand
@arkaic I know what you mean. I rented this when I wa sin high school and watched three times that day, now im studying Japanese cinema and I owe it mainly to this film. One of the saddest and poignant films that I have ever seen.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Rented it on DVD, when it came out. And not a lot of my friends were keen on it. You should check out EUREKA by Shinji Aoyama if you like this vein of movies.
not true at all actually. on the wikipedia page for lily chou chou it even says iwai was inspired to shoot digitally after hideaki anno made "Love and Pop"(which shot digitally)
the sky turns gold and red around me the sun giving all before the night takes it's own, i heard it say that, before, i wipe my face with my sleeve i look straight, sling my bag over my shoulder i am not naive i'v got the scars to show. I ride into the sun.
Ok it did have some good elements in it but in my opinion is was very depressing. Every minute it cut to a scene of someone dead or being bullied and there was no happy scenes really apart from the kite part and philia's chat with the girl over the phone and at the restaurant. :(. Hmm it was ok but there are many more great Japanese movies then this..
The love I have for this film is out of this world. When I first saw it, I never thought that I'd get to see it in a theater. But I did. -If you watch Lily Chou-Chou videos I am probably under them all under my other account: Joshua Lamar! or now with the new tag system @TetsuoIVIX
this film is so mind numbingly early 2000s that it literally makes my heart ache with such longing and nostalgia. ugh. words can't fully express it...
There's something about the simplicity of it that makes it a masterpiece
It is genuinely a great film. It is inscrutable but never out of reach. IT really is 2001: a space odyssey. Unbelievable movie that holds up ridiculously well to repeated viewings.
Longing and nostalgia, perfect words for the early 2000s.
took the words right out of my mouth

Took far too long for me to finally watch this movie. What a hard hitting film. So many beautiful and absolutely depressing moments. Amazing.
One of the most beauitul movies ever made.

The soundtrack is beyond words. Salyu is still one of my favorite artists of all time.

@hanito294 how is a movie being happy or depressing connected to the movie being good or bad?
That's the Chinese and English title, the Japanese one is "リリイ・シュシュのすべて"
i could say what genres influenced it though... trip hop, downtempo, lounge, jazz, ambient. very jazzy.
great movie. So sad though...
