      fyi, that coupler lock is junk, i seen bosnianbill (on youtube) pick one in less than 10 seconds. also, those boots are pretty easy to pick too, less than 30 seconds to pick that model. the dual locks on the spare are ok but, with a hanson socket and battery powered impact driver, they would be off in 10 seconds. i seen someone comment about a gps tracker, very good idea. as for a coupler lock, i'd use a trailer ball with the stud cut off (no way to pin-hitch the trailer that way) . sometimes simpler is better. like the idea of the removable chains. hope all this info helps.

    A friend of mine owns a tow company he got a call from a man to meet him on the side of the highway to recover a trailer that had a flat tire. My friend arrives to find a trail with 3 motorcycles on it missing a trailer wheel. the man claims he pulled it to far and the wheel was ruined. And he is in his wife's car so they need to get the trailer on the roll back truck and home as fast as they can. As my friend was winching the trailer up onto the bed the REAL owner shows up. Police were called bad guy drives off, my friend gave the tag number to the police, thief went to jail. My friend now requires proof of ownership before he moves anything.

    But at the end of ur video I noticed that you had a regular padlock on ur back door/ramp... BAD bad idea. Change it out to what some call a ' puck ' like a hockey puck. It covers the latch PLUS the shackle cannot be accessed. Just a added "peace"of mind !!! 🤗😉☺️

      Popping a lock , once you get shown how, is just as fast as using a key. You grab the body with channel locks, hit the body on the side with a hammer while pulling and ...it's open.
      Sorry but it's that easy to defeat most padlocks. Even the "good" locks can be picked really fast.
      TH-cam educated me.
      If thieves really want something a padlock is just a minor slowdown.
      You gotta be redundant with locks locking locks.

      I hunt in arkansas and camp at a very remote wma. Nearest light is 3 miles away. Think swamp.
      I have to lock up the boat like always. The engine is locked on with a cable. A good bike lock... the fort Knox u shaped ones. That will keep your trailer where you left it. One on each wheel locking rim to frame. My motor would be gone 3 times by now if it wasn't locked and bolted onto the boat.

      cables don't offer much protection. If it's a VERY heavy cable, it'll stop those $25 hardware store variety of cable cutter but then the cable becomes difficult to manage. if the thief has time, something like side cutters will work through any cable in no time. For that idea, the best would be a heavy boron security chain or a pewag chain but they are very expensive and heavy. ..and then your weak spot will be the lock so you'll need a mega lock for that too which will be another $100+. I suppose it's nothing if you're protecting a $100K trailer full of your belongings.

    That special tool needed to remove those gorilla lugs is called vicegrips. Also, the ball lock is only as strong as the lip around the ball receiver on the tongue. I've had mine removed on my boat either as a sport or maybe they were scared away by something else. ..probably the size of the boat. I've had and still have a set of the gorilla lugs on my wheels. They're the kind where every lug nut is a keyed lug nut. I'm told that they can be removed with vicegrips and a solution of ATF n acetone as a penetrating oil ..or heat n candle wax ...and the determination of a dirty thief..

    Most thieves don't want to spend a lot of time cutting items off a trailer.
    A simple car alarm with a motion sensor, added door contacts powered by a battery inside with a loud horn on the roof will deter all but the most determined criminals.

    Cordless grinder will defeat pretty much anything

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      or even small bolt cutters. A cordless grinder is slow, a cutoff wheel is faster. Even better than that is the cordless rebar cutter..it's nearly silent, no spark show, and cuts through in seconds. There are also hydraulic hand operated cutters no bigger than a large pipe wrench. ...also silent.
      Any of these would remove that padlock and hitch ball lock faster than you could using the proper keys. There's no stopping that so all you can do is slow them down by hoping you have something that they don't have the tools for. The reality is, once you get into the mobile lifestyle, or out in the boonies, EVERYBODY is travelling with power tools. If you're camping and don't have all the cordless power tools, the next guy who pulls up next to you will. I think one of the best methods is to disable the trailer but that's also a lot of work if your stay is short.

    • @ckm-mkc
      @ckm-mkc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In theory, yes, if you can hold the lock while grinding and the shackle is not esp. hard. In practice, it's a lot harder than it sounds if you put the lock in a hard to access spot and it's not rigidly mounted. Any security system can be defeated, the point is to discourage people from even trying.

    what i have done for all of my trailers including a 30' enclosed gooseneck. Yes using a device to cover or block the tongue is a must , a wheel lock is a plus as long as you do use the locking nuts. but heres where the elegance comes in. as long as your trailer has electric brakes.... inside the trailer where thieves cant get to it attach a car alarm to a house battery and tie the outputs to the trailer running lights so that the lights will flash if activated, place the siren in a hard to access location under the trailer, some simple pin switches on the doors to activate the alarm should a door be opened, as it has a tilt and motion sensor it will alarm is someone tries to break in or tow the trailer. When the alarm goes off assuming that you properly chose an alarm with an triggered output send the signal to a relay and then the relay to the electric brake wiring under the trailer in a non obvious tap. This will cause the wheels to lock up if the alarm is activated making the trailer nearly impossible to tow. no its not going to prevent the truly determined from getting your trailer or its contents, but it does draw attention to a thief (which they dont want) it is a great $300 insurance plan and my alarm has a transmitter and receiver so up to a mile away i will know if my alarm is triggered.

    Any one in Australia - you cant do the chain mod the video shows as it is illegal, and frankly, pointless. Anyone that is going to chain tow your rig is going to have a length of chain and a pair of D shackles and just bypass that idea altogether. This is an issue trailer boat and caravan owners have grappled with for years. The 'boot' and security wheel nuts works well. So much so the thieves are more likely to take anything out side the rig (generators, boxes, fuel cans, solar panels, LPG cylinders etc, even water filters! before taking the rig itself .

      FLIPPING GREAT IDEA ! I have been on the receiving end of that situation. And it DID take some real time to fix my wheel. ( Old, Old Chrysler )

    Thanks very much; I appreciate the information. I am thinking about converting a cargo trailer to a camper, and I will consider the safety/anti-theft devices you showed when I build it. Thanks, again.

    You can also put a GPS tile on it.. They're so small they fit on a dog's collar or key chain..so they would never see it..

    Loosen ALL lug nuts (very wobbly trailer) or remove all, but the 1 locking lug nuts... if they destroy it... not going more than 10’ ...in addition to other methods.

      Good idea...but eventually "I" would forget to put the lug nuts back on before driving off.

      locking lugnuts don't work. none of them. if they stick out enough, they grab them with vise grips or pipe wrench (look around now as people have them on their steel winter rims, the "security" nuts that need a unique tool are 100% sticking out in front of the rim face, availble to turn with anything that'll grab a round object...thanks.
      As for the other ones installed recessed pockets in the rim, thieves get any socket that's similar in diameter but a tiny bit smaller. hammer it over and onto the lock nut. done, the points and sides of the socket will grab the nut enough to turn it off. takes seconds.

      littlegoobie I am in yur corner... EVERYTHING can be defeated... proven.
      What I promote is discouraging... layering levels of prevention... Make them
      think out loud... “Now what ?” as they defeat 1 level, and now have to beat
      ANOTHER level...lol & move on to an easier, quieter to defeat victim.
      NO, 1 secure method is on the exists...
      ... but my .45 works... if awoken inside ! 🙀

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, that's the way to go. You should secure items using several different techniques where each method requires a different set of tools to defeat. But, like i said in another comment, if the thief is another mobile home person, chances are they have just about every power tool and hand tool with them. you never know what'll break when you're 300 miles from the next town. For them, all you can do is remove key pieces like the wheels, or hitch. or have the biggest trailer on the road and do all your travelling in mountainous terrains where only the biggest 450/550 pickup can move it. ...and then pull it on a gooseneck because not many seem to have them over standard 5th wheel hitches.

    Bad things can happen out on the road. I will never leave any tent or camper behind while I drive elsewhere. There is a YT channel, Little House on the Road, their pop up camper and all possessions where they lived full time, was burned to complete ashes while they were away in truck. A derelict man who lived in the woods had stolen all the food out of their camper, and burned it down to cover up his crime. Their solution was to build a new camper on top of their truck and take it everywhere with them. I tend to agree now. I don’t trust no one. Best wishes to you and your wife...really enjoy your quality videos.

      We sure don't leave it behind very often, not of we can help it! I also watch Little House On The Road for his different point of view. Thanks!
