Roadkill would never buy anything this complete and not rusted out. They would buy a $500 race car that someone wanted to race and never did, and had a roll cage made out of swing set tubing.
There's no good place to get your hand under the hood since it has pins now and not the stock latch. The stock latch would pop the hood up when you pull the lever. If it didn't have that handle, you'd have to put a pry bar under it to lift it high enough to get your hand under.
You are not the only one. I've been expecting a Ford Falcon v Holden Kingswood or Commodore build between the two boys for a while now... Marty needs a XY or XA Falcon or even a Chrysler Valiant to go against the Quey
I’m so excited! I’ve lived in the U.K. for 35 years,but the second car I had was a HQ! It was ex-Army and had a 253 V8 with a tri-matic. I was about 17. I used to burn a set of rear tyres a month. Happy days! Throw away the 202 and put a 327 in it. So excited! Thank you guys. You’ve made a old man very happy. (I paid $1200 for my HQ in 1982 The price is mental!)

As an American, I am excited to learn about Holden. All I know is that Holden was a subsidiary of Chevrolet, so I am pumped to expand my knowledge on this area of cars that I do not know too much about! Thank you both for doing this!
Love the idea and plesently surprised you rolled an old HQ in the shed. Those engines however aren’t simply stock with headers, they’re ported head, bigger valves, usually roller rockers, decked block, decked head and flat top pistons giving a compression ratio of 12.5:1. Also run a race cam and need avgas, can’t run on premium unleaded as it’ll detonate. Even with the single throat stromberg and three speed manual these hq’s are quicker in a straight line than a gtr xu1 Torana. Put a five speed in it, a decent Holley and tune it to run E85 before you ditch the engine. I know you’ll be dropping a Barra in it though, it’s the only way.

So you could compare the power differents between the old and new engine. This would be a ideal car for a LS-swap. I know it sounds like a meme but there is enough room for it and Holden is part of GM so it would make more sense than a Japanes engine.
My family is right into the HQ Holden racing and I’ve actually raced against this very car so all I can say is MCM you’ve done the right thing here, because the old Hq straight 6 is so easy to work on and as for calling it a “nugget” well don’t hate it too much because it is old and parts are getting hard to get but if you cleaned it up a bit I’m sure the boys down at Sydney would love for you guys to come racing and represent the category and the beauty of it is the hq category is cheap to run in and all the cars are closely matched. 🤙🏼

You guys got a good buy, I just sold a HX Deluxe V8 which is similar I sold it for 3,500 but it had a lot or rust. If you stripped the car down and sold part like doors, hood, and boot you could come close to 10k. Doors even with rust can go for 450 +. Some advice check the Cowl and plenum for rust this is a common place for rust and also make sure you clean your Door drains and use a rust preventer to stop and rust continuing. Good work guys looking forward to the progress on this

Hey guys , I have been waiting for this day ,The day you guys get to do Aussie muscle, its going to be fun watching you guys do this build...Look like a black motor 202 in the early commodores looks like a yellaterra head. looks like a wb ute front bumper on it check the front subframe for cracks.. you can unbolt the subframe and walk the whole front off ,I have done a few in the day my step father taught me alot about holdens. we was all ways breaking down but that was good cause it was fun trying to fix the bloody things, it always brought the boyz together and a carton or to, To get the job done alot of good times holden was good for that..That's why I love em …
A competitive HQ race motor was not a cheap engine - you could easily spends $5K on a build. Compression was free, valve material was free and the engine needed a good builder to get every last horse power to be competitive. They used to get around 180hp back in the day - good enough to break 2 minutes at Eastern Creek and they were quicker than a Phase II GTHO at Bathurst. If it is a good engine it should still be worth a couple of grand.
They'll prob end up going LSA with 4l60e as they seem to like newer engines and it's a pretty straight forward swap given their collection of friends/helpers
here in the usa I once owned a similar car. 1970 chevrolet nova with a 250 cubic inch 6 cylinder/ 2 speed power glide trans. it was a very good serviceable car and did its daily driver/ family travel trips in the mountains loaded with people and stuff just great. sadly my wife crashed it and that was the end. I paid a whole 250 dollars for the car in 1981. it came from california and had no rust. the engine/trans and running gear were just fine. I fixed a couple little things and got 5 years of use out of it. When using it to go to work and back I would get 20mpg which was just fine with me. gas back then was pretty cheap. no oil burning or leaking problems. good car.
according to Holden facts, no holden other than the VE and VF were designed in Australia for Australia, im incorrect on the HQ, was american designed in america by Chevrolet, it wasnt untill later on we saw the vauxhall and opel designed models come to australia... Other than being built in australia, holdens cars have stuff all to do with "pure australian" other than now its history in the country. now the commodore is a PSA/Peugeot hatchback... not even a GM owned model anymore, they buy the cars off PSA badge them and sell. what a flop

Great purchase Guys. Although 10K isn't cheap it doesn't sound that far off to me. And that's coming from a Euro guy who knows that Australian classic car prices where the first to blow up world wide. Crazy to think though that when I was there in '08 that I could buy a road worthy rego'd V8 Kingswood wagon with similar bodywork for less then 3K. The second choice was a 351 XB falcon 4 door, bad repaint and in need of rego (SA) but roadworthy for 4K..

We got 186 ci 6 with the 2 speed powerglide, sometimes got trapped at the bottom of steep driveways until it warmed up.

My very 1st car was a HQ Premier. It had a 253 and used more oil than petrol, i wish i had kept it and done it up, she would be a beauty to behold today.

Great purchase Guys. Although 10K isn't cheap it doesn't sound that far off to me. And that's coming from a Euro guy who knows that Australian classic car prices where the first to blow up world wide. Crazy to think though that when I was there in '08 that I could buy a road worthy rego'd V8 Kingswood wagon with similar bodywork for less then 3K. The second choice was a 351 XB falcon 4 door, bad repaint and in need of rego (SA) but roadworthy for 4K..
The mining boom could be a small factor.
