She did a really interesting thing in her tour thats going on right now. When she plays this song she requests the whole crowd to go quiet for the intro part of the song cause she sings the harmonies layer by layer , having them looped. Very interesting and makes it way more emotional. Very touching performance by her.
In case you didn't look it up already: the black coming out of her eyes was achieved using piping along her face, and then the piping itself was removed digitally. So it's a brilliant marriage of practical liquid effects with digital magic to hide where the liquid's coming from! :)
I always interpreted the black liquid as indicative of the toxicity of a relationship. Possibly feeling physically used “call me friend, but keep me closer”. It’s as if you know the relationship is toxic, but you just can’t resist indulging, then you have to have a release at some point.
Check out the Hostage music video if you really wanna be blown away, it’s absolutely stunning! If you want something creepy and get a halloween vibe check out “Bury a friend” music video, the director of bury a friend also directed the conjuring as well! She also sang the part of sally and did “Sally’s song” live for another Halloweenish vibe. Also a slept on song called “The 30th” is about her friend that got into a car crash and she drove by while it was happening
Billie's mom and dad are actors, and her mom is an acting coach, so I'm sure some of Billie's skill comes from that. I'm so glad that you watched this video. This was really the first video I saw of Billie's when I realized how much talent she had.
Brilliant reaction to a brilliant piece of art, thank you! On her current tour, she live loops all the backing vocals for this song, one by one, and sings the main melody over the top, which obvs requires absolute silence while she is recording it. I had the pleasure of seeing this live at Madison Square Garden last week and you could actually hear the air conditioning at the back of the building while she was looping the harmonies. What an experience!
@@nomadine85 It was honestly pretty spiritual to have 20,000 people in complete silence like that. And when the audience did start to sing along during the main song, they would drop out completely in the gaps between the lines. It was loud, yet respectful and tuneful (which has not always been the case at her shows!).
I'm really happy that you like the videos. there are so many good videos of her. I hope for more reactions from you to Billie, I think you're doing a great job. Thanks
5:12 Her and Finneas were homeschooled. She has never gone to school (Finneas did for a little bit). She has taken dance lessons and been part of a choir and did horse riding and other such things, so she did have classes, but she never went to school. Her mother taught acting and song writing (and areal gymnastics). She did act in one role in a series called “Swarm”, where she was a manipulative sociopath sex cult leader. Creepy, but she said she enjoyed acting being murdered 😅. Ah, Billie. She does seem to want to act more now. Oh, and in the topic of acting, I guess she did host the SNL show once as well. But you’re right, her acting in her music videos alone is and has always been so good.
While I agree that her voice may not have been what one would consider her best, I still consider this my favourite live performance of this song because of factors other than vocal “perfection”, so to speak. The emotive progression and her and Finneas’ interaction, and the depth of her voice is something remarkable and very specific to that performance, and I listen to it all the time.
Great reaction. About your question when Billie heard the song the first time. When it was cmposed. She kept hearing it from her room as Finneas was working on it for months one end. Finally he asked if she'd like to try it. The rest is history. As for the video, apparently she got the idea from a drawing a fan made of her in Montreal. They cover these facts in the documentary film "The World's a Little Blurry".
Sorry to be pedantic but what you’re telling about is actually what happened with Ocean Eyes, not with this song. Although she also says that it applied in general, it’s not explicitly about this song, but about ocean eyes.
@@nomadine85 Sorry to burst your confidenc,e but you're wrong here. Ocean Eyes was done long before this one, but that was openly made by all in the family, including his mother who contirbuted "napalm skies". When the party's over was, by contrast, Finneas's own. He could never get it to work for a male voice so he finally asked Billie to try, much to her relief. All through this entire development process she could hear him develop the song since she was in a room across the hallway in her own room making her own music. By the time he asked her to sing, she'd already absorbed this musical history and it was as if she was allways working on it.
I JUST KNEW YOU WOULD LOVE THIS! When I first saw this Billie absolutely stole my heart and she will have it forever. Her brother wrote this driving home after breaking up with a girl he really cared for. The party was over. By the way, The Warning just released the entire Pepsi Center show. Lots of extra stuff we haven't seen in the individual clips. When you have time crack open your favorite beverage and enjoy!

I love that as a fellow older guy...lol, you get her and Finneas' greatness. So many haters out there. They are absolutely brilliant at what they do. I'm seeing her live in just over a week again and can't wait! Her shows are awesome! Great reaction my friend!☺️🙏
I had forgotten how brilliant this video is. This is one of my favorite songs so I listen to it fairly often. But it has been a while since I watched the video. Your review and comments made it fresh again. Thank you.
I feel like billie puts so much effort into her music and finneas puts so much into the production and the music videos that she would be happy you and other people pay attention to everything not just the song and lyrics. It's good to appreciate all aspects of music not just how high and quiet she can sing sad lyrics. Billie is one of my favorite artists because she puts so much into every aspect of her music.
** Before I begin, I have watched clips from her shows and for this song she is sitting on the floor/ platform, has asked everyone to please be silent, and she hums those beginning notes and loops them in real time, several times, one after another- while a crowd of 18-20K are silent. Her command of the stage and the crowd is remarkable. ** On a tour stop ( last year?) in Australia they were waiting at a crosswalk and their father said something to the effect of “ This is a really cool sound. - referring to the one that is counting down to the green light to cross “ Billie and Finneas start laughing and, as kids often say, “ Duh, we used it in Bad Guy!” Yes Billie is absolutely phenomenal. As is FINNEAS , who did all of the production. Learned by watching others and asking lots of questions. She is definitely a multifaceted and multidimensional artist. And honestly, she grabs me by my throat- which is where my heart usually ends up. Their interviews ( Zane Lowe** Songs that influenced me, Apple ) are really great. 4:15 on the recording it’s only her layered harmonies. With the exception of this current tour, Finneas was always on tour with her (and the parents as well) and performed with her, which is when he would provide harmonies live.
As someone who likes to research and know about all the little details and discuss it from lots of angles, I can enjoy doing so with reactors like you. But I’ve come to realise that with some reactors I get to go into all the nerdy little details and they’ll appreciate it because they are paying attention to it all, but when I watch reactors who are vibing, I simply take that as data in itself. Does it irk me a tiny little bit when they miss things? Sure. But I try to remind myself that in reality people are likely to possess varying levels of attention just like they have personalities and tastes. I try to approach it like a research situation where I’m observing the reaction as data and information. I could probably write a dissertation at this point… 😅
I agree! React to what you notice overall....a second and third listen will reVeal the rest. I like to see if reactors notice the same things as I do...or if they will point out something I missed!

Thanks so much for a very kind and thoughtful comment. I will add the couple you mentioned to my list. Thanks for the compliment as well. It's always the right time to give a kind word.
honestly as much as she is a great actor, there are instances in music videos like this one where she is probably in a lot of pain anyway, which she then channels into the character she’s playing. the ink stinging her eyes, the terrible tasting juice from hell, the fact that she’d have to shower and change after every take - which if you pay close attention you can see some blue/black stains on her arms in the video. also knowing she’s such a perfectionist it would also be really frustrating having to do it multiple times and getting it wrong/wanting it a different way. so I feel like the pain and desperation exuded in the video could be a lot of those factors combined and channeled into her acting
it bugs me when commenters complain about the reaction of the reactor. "you talk too much. you pause too much. you're not even listening." this is what you sign up for by clicking on a reaction video. the original video is right over there. also, make your own damn reaction the way you think it should be done. see how far that gets you. i think a little constructive criticism is fine, a little correction from someone who knows the lore, but even then, people who feel they know the lore are wrong a lot of times. it's best to just let it slide, watch if you wanna, don't watch if you don't wanna, hit the like if you like it or if you at least appreciate the effort. i've never posted a video, but i imagine it takes a lot of time and effort to do it and it's potentially a lot of exposure. the least one can do it hit the thumbs up. this short little song is such a perfect interlude and that's how i think of it. it probably wasn't meant to be an interlude. i just see it like that when i listen to this album.
it's like she's drinking in sadness from the cup and can't hold it in as she continues to tell the story. one of my favorite videos of hers.

Welll...on the Stern show it was very early and it wasn't her best. She's normally amazing live.
She hasn't warmed up there though. Lowest notes shaky and she doesn't reach the peak notes. But great performance considering the circumstance.
