Les Ballets Russes de Nijinsky
En 1912 Vaslav Nijinsky est au sommet de son art. Danseur étoile des ballets russes, il réalise sa première chorégraphie l’Après-Midi d’un Faune d’après l’œuvre de Claude Debussy, lui-même inspiré du poême de Mallarmé. Ce ballet a marqué l’histoire de l’art et l’on connait les influences qu’il a eues et qu’il a encore sur la danse moderne et contemporaine comme nous le verrons ce soir .
Le public et la critique, qui attendaient un Nijinsky bondissant sont désorientés par cette suite d’immobilités suggestives. Après la première au théâtre du Chatelet le 29 mai 1912, une violente polémique s’engage dans le Tout-Paris.
Nijinsky, lui, est obsédé par l’idée de laisser une trace de son travail. Diaghilev, directeur des ballets russes, refuse catégoriquement que Nijinsky soit filmé.
Nijinsky a conscience que le système de notation de la danse à cette époque est insuffisant( Il créera même un nouveau système de notation que nous ne savons pas déchiffrer, hélas) .
Mais surtout il se rapproche du photographe Adolf De Meyer. Ils tâchent ensemble de synthétiser la totalité du ballet en un petit nombre de photographies (32 au total et peut-être quelques autres lors d’une autre séance)
Après de nombreuses études en volume, le sculpteur Christian Comte par un patient séquençage de ces photographies au rythme de la musique est parvenu à reconstituer les grandes lignes du film perdu de Nijinsky que les collectionneurs recherchent à travers le monde depuis 100 ans( car une légende a couru que Charlie Chaplin l’aurait filmé lors de leur rencontre en 1916. )
Nijinsky a utilisé le même procédé photographique pour tous les ballets qu’il a interprétés, c'est-à-dire qu’il a décomposé son mouvement en plusieurs clichés pour donner une idée de son geste idéal.
Voilà pourquoi Christian Comte a pu reconstituer quelques pas de Nijinsky dans 12 ballets.
N’avait-il pas écrit dans son Journal avant de sombrer dans la folie cette phrase sibylline :
« Je suis Nijinsky, celui qui meurt s'il n'est pas aimé, c’est par pitié de Dieu que j'ai pitié de moi même, et je suis l'élu de celui qui dans la mort même, me pourvoira de vie ».
Quand il parle de lui ,il parle de sa danse et cette danse,comme l’avait prédit son esprit prophétique , est ressuscitée devant vous ce soir sur la musique d’un autre grand artiste maudit Niccolo Paganini

Господин Дягилев строго настрого запретил снимать танец Нижинского. И это правда. Фотографий было достаточно. И те редкие куски составления фотографий в кадр движений просто бесподобны. Это бог танца, какие-то сверхчеловеческие пластика и прыгучесть. Как бы хотелось увидеть полностью этот шедевр Видение (призрак) розы вместе с Тамарой Карсавиной.
Как замедленная съемка выглядит, но он конечно великолепен. А по этому видео круче всего смотрится "Весна священная"

Ive never been that impressed by baryshnikov nor nureyev, but this man was very special. If only we had live footage of him. The photos of him are so amazingly beautiful. I can only imagine the god like power of his actions.

I have a history of martial arts but have never been that impressed by bruce lee just like ive never been impressed by nureyev. I seem to be searching for something ive not yet seen. I do believe nijinsky is who im searching for. Its very sad there is no film of him dancing.

Well, I will never understand why nobody ever filmed Nijinsky, as we have surviving films of other dancers from at least 1900 on. As the photos are only a very pale shadow of his art, this bizarre arrangements by Comte at least fit to his image not dancing as a human being :-) - but, seriously, the "film" shows how modern he was and how much he had to say and show beyond technique and virtuosity.
I read somewhere that possibly Charlie Chaplin filmed him as he filmed most people who visited him but if he did, the film is possibly sitting in a box of old stuff unknown

The exercise of bending the existing few still photos of Nijinsky is interesting but the maker should have used the actual ballet music which is readily playable. 06:32 Nijinsky did not dance in "Le Sacre du Printemps".
Right but he choreographed it. Would have been good to mention that.

All of the stop motion and film reversals, along with patched together footage makes Nijinsky’s ballets look stranger and more ethereal than they actually were. I get the idea behind it, but the execution lost something in translation, especially when attempts to recreate his jumps are shown.
