I didn't read the title correctly and thought their was only one part to this series. When the first ended I was pretty pissed haha. Thankful for the second vid and the series.
Amazing craftsmanship! Looking to make an armour for myself since I love anything medieval and will be using this helmet! Can't wait to make it and show it off at some medieval 'picnics'! 😁
Awesome video! Exactly the info I was searching for :-) I'm not heavy into the Live Action Roleplay, but I really love the ancient architecture look, historical facts and ideology, mostly Templar's. I've decorated my living and dining room to somewhat of a medieval style and decided to try my hand at a Templar Knights armor. Store bought most items, but wanted to make a unique helmet as to not be completely generic or look like everyone else's armor, something that stands out in a crowd lol, as if the sword, dagger and chainmail wasn't enough of a fashion statement. :-) Thank you so much for your time, effort and invaluable information to guide me along.
The pleasure is mine, thank you very much for your feedback! I don't larp either or anything like that, I just love history and I creating things like this. They make great decorative pieces too on a shelf!
Thanks! Yes it feels really sturdy, but with the thick padding it feels good. Haven't held it in my head for hours so I don't know how my neck would feel after a long time of use
Hi there! Really nice tutorial. I am fascinated with armours since i was a kid. But now i have more money and freedom to try making one. Could you share with me some tips for absolute begginer? What armour piece is the easiest to make? What type of steel is good to make a durable armour or do i need some fancy tools to get it done?
Hi! I guess the best advice is to have patience, it's hard at first but once you learn the basics of how to shape metal it gets easier and you learn it by doing it. I try to explain everything in my videos but there's a lot you need to just experience yourself. But it's very rewarding :) Thickness of steel should be 1,0 to 2,0 mm. I usually use either 1,25 or 1,5 mm. You can use 1 mm for practice and small pieces but for large pieces it won't hold shape very well. Mild steel is what people usually use, it's quite easy to shape and you don't need to use heat. It's also durable enough, but if you want to have more durable you should use different steel with higher carbon amount. But then you need tools for heat treatment and I don't know about those since I don't have them. But it's what people use for those medieval fights. The great helm (this video) is what people usually start with. Besides these videos, I've made 2 other great helms, 1 set of gauntlets and 1 other helmet which I have not recorded. So yeah, great helm is a good one to begin with
Hey man. I was looking at the template of the helmet and i have some questions. First question , is it scaled for A4 paper? Second question, the pattern at 1st page is forlower back and pattern at 2nd page is for lower front right?
Hello! Yes I've scanned them in A4 and there's a scale to check that in prints it right size. There were some issues before but it should work now since I fixed it. And yes the 1st page is for lower back and 2nd page if for lower front. Third page is for the upper part of the helmet (front and back)
It's really hard to say the exact amount since I buy all the materials (steel, brass, leather, rivets) in large numbers, so I don't use them all at once. But maybe something like 40-80 euros
Well if you have the tools already it's not that much. I usually buy large sheets of steel and brass, lots of rivets and large piece of leather so it's quite hard to tell the exact amount since I don't use them all in a single project. But maybe like 40 - 80 euros.
@@GarageKnight Thank you! I'm looking at some steel on eBay because I really want to try this. I want to make sure I have all the steps clearly laid out first so I don't end up making a heap of garbage :)
I'm not sure what you mean by rating, but if it were 14 gauge (2mm) and high carbon steel then it would meet the requirements for this modern medieval combat you might have seen (international medieval combat federation). So it would be durable enough. And since modern steel is stronger than medieval steel, it would be stronger than medieval helmets.
No problem, if you are going to use it in full contact combat you might want to check some forum about that too. I've only read about it but I've never done it and I know those organizations have very strict rules about the armor thickness etc.
@@GarageKnight already done it tempered steel no less than 1.8mm on helmlets or mild steel no less than 2.5mm stainless steel no less than 2mm for torso and limps mild steel no less than 1mm and equivalent with titanium tempered stainless steel
Can't tell the exact number since I buy brass and steel in large sheets (so there's much leftover material for other projects) but maybe like 30 euros. Then there are rivets and leather etc which add about another 30 euros. Something like that
@@JohnsonTheSecond Yeah the materials doesn't cost much. And like you saw in the video you don't any fancy tools either. I didn't count how long it took, but maybe like 30 hours. It was one of my very first builds so I'd probably make it faster now.
I've never really worked with cardboard so I don't know how to make it shiny like that. You can't of course make it as good as the steel version but maybe you could cover it with lacquer or something? You would also have to make the top part flat but otherwise you could shape it like that. You should use very thick cardboard so it would not have any dents and would not bend accidentally. Any way it should be quite easy and quick project with cardboard so maybe give it a try :)

Great job. Nice filing work, too. That weight seems pretty spot on for a good helmet - fire service helmets come in around 7-8lbs.

i knew yoy won’t sell it because i already read your comment, but can you make a range for price for this helmet?
Do you mean how much does it cost to make one or how much these cost if you buy one?
@@GarageKnight yes it is, sorry for my grammar if you did not understand

How much would it cost for all the supplies needed?

How's the visibility while wearing that?
It's worse than in open helmets of course, especially in up-down direction. But it's not so bad that it seems actually.
Do you have experience in making Helmets with visors ?
Not yet, but I've been planning on doing it at some point

How did you get the bolts to such a nice rounded edge?
@@ratoverlord6318 I bought rivets like that, the other end was already round
How long in total did this project take?
About 30 hours I think
so how much for the helmet itself
Sorry I don't sell them, they're for my man cave
How did you go about polishing it?
I used angle grinder with polishing discs (lamella or flap discs) and then used some metal polish paste.
