I hear ya! I am 52 and Van Halen was my very first concert in the fall of 1980, when I was only 8 years old! My stepbrother is 6 years older than me and our parents actually allowed him to take me to the show - needless to say, I was hooked immediately and have remained a huge fan ever since.
Goin' on 60 here. Right after hearing Eruption for the very first time, I had to excuse myself and ran to the bathroom. You can only imagine what happened next??? 🤯✊️🍾🪣🚿
I've said it before. Imagine driving around on a Friday night in high school, and hearing this for the first time. That was me, 1978. If he blows your mind now, with TH-cam available, imagine how a 16 year old felt then. Mind blown.
Eddie and the boys really took the rock world by storm with this album. This was guitar wizardry in 1978
yes! and the producer Ted Templeman didn't think they would sell any albums, because it was the disco era. He said he just knew he had to capture this incredible guitarist on tape. Turns out he saved us all from Disco!

Van Halen didn’t use click tracks in the early days, and everyone recorded live at the same time. It gave their music a raw energy in your face sound.

My first experience with Van Halen was in 1980, when I was 13 years old.
My buddy had nice headphones and a turn table and he warned, "you are going to melt."
Running with the Devil was almost too much for my disco ears. Then eruption started, and I told him,
"That's not a guitar! That's a synthesizer."
My brain just couldn't grasp that a guitar could do that.
I've been playing guitar ever since.

@@MugnifyRTS Just a little clarity on the live version...it is diff riffs from different songs, but this song Eruption is sprinkled throughout the entire solo. So they are both Eruption - it's just the live version has a lot more added to it. ✌

I don't like that most people react to the much later version. The album original is the 1:43 Bomb that dropped on everybody's head in 1978
The live version has pieces of Spanish fly mean street cathedral and all the other instrumental things he had done up to that point in his career- but the album version is eruption in its purest form - i was 13 and went to a friends house after school as he knew i played guitar and he wanted me to hear Van Halen 1 on his turntable (no walkmans or phones with music libraries yet 😅) He dropped the needle on side one of VH and it was like some otherworldly symphony of rock that forever made me a “tone chaser” on guitar. 40 years later and i still play this album at least once a week to get the passion for playing music back!!! RIP maestro Edward - you are missed! Oh and I asked if i could borrow the record to learn the licks and my friend said yes - and i still have that album today hahaha never gave it back 😅

THIS was the one that affected SO many people. The summer of 1978.....I was 12, and my stoner neighbor turned me on to this. My mind was blown....along with everyone else. The sound of heavy rock was changed forever.
This was used in a Nissan commercial where G.I. Joe was picking up Barbie at her Dreamhouse (sometime in the early 2000's, maybe?)
I was 11 and traveling with my youth baseball coach and he popped in this 8 track and my world was changed forever.
@@cdalbo66 Somewhere in my "stash of stuff" I still have a couple of 8-tracks floating around. One is my "Frampton Comes Alive" (iconic 70's shit right there) and the other survivor is "Back In Black".
That one was probably the last 8-track ever released before cassettes became the norm.
Greatest debut album of all-time
They said when this band covered a song already in existence, the song got "Van Halen-ized" & in many cases ended up a better version.
Now this is Eruption, the Live Without A Net, Eruption, is part of the show. This is a cover of the English band, The kinks, and yes in a commercial over the years

“You Really Got Me” was a 1960’s hit record from “The Kinks” Van Halen simply revved it up a little, as it was one of the songs they covered when they were unsigned and playing in bars and clubs. “Ice Cream Man” is also a cover song and not an original VH song on this album.

I learnt something new about eruption recently. As a life long Van Halen fan I knew eruption was just Eddie warming up in the studio, the engineer heard it and convinced Ed to put it on the album. What I didn’t know until i heard it on Rick Beato’s channel is that both Eruption and You Really Got Me were recorded consecutively in one take. There is a room mic recording where the dive bomb wobbles at the end of eruption don’t fade out but segue directly into the opening of YRGM. Mindblowing stuff. Eddie will always be the king.
Radio stations still play these two songs consecutively. I heard YOU REALLY GOT ME on Pandora, and they did NOT play ERUPTION first. It just sounds STRANGE to play one without the other.

You can not describe the shudder that went through the entire guitar world when Eruption dropped. The entire guitar Universe was altered as people sat open jawed trying to comprehend what they had just listened to. The landscape of guitar was forever changed and taken to otherworldly places. There had never been anything like Edward Van Halen. He changed the game. Opinions vary, but for me...he is The G.O.A.T.
Like one of the other guys said it was a remake from the Kinks. But VH rocks it out. This album is what set the stage for 1980’s rock. Soundtrack to my life and a whole couple of generations. I like watching your channel better than anyone else’s. You’re a pretty cool dude! Keep ‘em coming and rock on!

The Eruption solo from the live performance was an amalgam of VanHalen riffs and lead-ins and gimmicks from 6 of their original albums, sort of laced in with the original VH1original "Eruption"." You Really Got Me" is a cover, not a VH writing. This is a British invasion song by the "Kinks", probably around 1965....I believe that the next track is "Aint Talkin' 'bout Love'...This is a classic my friend, hope you like. One of my favorite things is seeing a new generation discovering The Mighty Van Halen! Lovin the reactions my friend. Trust me you Can't go wrong with Anything from the Roth era. This particular album is IMO the greatest Rock album of All time. Yes, the GOAT. Edward and Dave's first contribution to the Rock world. And also never taking for granted Al Killing the Drums and Mike doin his thing on bass and backup vocals. Perfection.

The live Eruption solo is actually a bunch of different solo's and guitar riffs combined. The live one also had Cathedral from Diver Down album mixed in as well.
This is the first of 10 cover songs in Van Halen's first six albums. You'll get to another one soon with Ice Cream Man. They're all fantastic.

Although I love to watch the live version and watch people react to it, this version of Eruption melts my face off every time. It's the Wacka Wacka nasty feedback at the end that always gets me. Just classic EVH.
This was the Soundtrack that started my high school life. 1982 Walking in as a freshman first day and someone had this playing on full blast on a boombox in the cafeteria before 1st period. That was a cool way to be introduced to High School
Best guitarists in the world couldn’t figure out how he played this at the time. It wasn’t until they saw him play that they realized something new and different was happening.

totally. if you ever played the standard strat trem, you know how amazing it is! you just bump it and the whole guitar goes out of tune. I read when Eddie did the big dive bombs, he had to take his left hand and hold it over the nut to keep the strings from popping out. that was a craft not many could duplicate. freaking easy with the floyd rose now.
I grew up on these! I always took them for granted. Until I really started LISTENING to music.

Fun fact: In 1978, "You Really Got Me" as a single, was rushed to radio, because the band Angel also covered this song, and Edward played VH's version for the guys in Angel, and it freaked them out so much, that Angel re-recorded their version of it, to try and outdo VH. But Warner Bros. didnt want Angels version competing with VH's version. Needless to say, Angels re-recorded version was never released. Good call. While Angel was a great group, NO ONE, stood a chance competing against VH. Ironically though, Dave Davies of the Kinks, didnt care for VH's version of it, as he thought Edward made it sound "too easy".🤣

@@rothed16 I'm going to guess that Dave Davies, like everyone else, instantly recognized Edwards INSANELY enabled effortless style of playing, and thought that the song should sound a little more "earthy and dirty" (as he wrote it), instead of the lightening bolt VH's version is. Don't think he was saying he didn't like VH necessarily, but that he just didn't care for their version. And being as he wrote the song, and being intimately familiar with HIS original intent for it, might've seemed to him like somebody "dressed his baby in clothes he didn't like". 🤔

Amen brother ! Everyone should listen to the original album version of Eruption for a first time listen (followed immediately by "Got Me") In-concert Eruption is a more free-form expression of the original.
Yes, it would've been better to hear the studio version first, but oh well. The live version is really many of his solos combined with the original solo that he goes back and forth to. Listen to this a few times then watch the live and you will hear where the original parts are. Van Halen is special, it's cool that you are going through the albums. Rock on!
You really got me feeling some type of way watching you react to one of my all-time favorite albums. I love Fair Warning but I'll take this album over that one every time.

There are a few exceptions where a live version is worth hearing first. But too many times hearing it live doesn't convey how great the recorded version is. To appreciate Ed's live Eruption, there's really 3 or 4 songs you should be familiar with, because it's a medley. And as great as he was in concert, it still doesn't reach the level and impact these two tracks had when people first heard them. This was monumental in its day. Props to you on realizing that. For those of us old enough to remember the moment we heard it first, watching a first time reaction is probably the closest we could ever come to being right back there when it did happen.
I have heard several covers from great players….but this version is still the best
Eruption was put on the record almost by accident. The bands producer, Ted Templeman, heard Eddie doing it in the studio as a warm up for a gig they had that night. He asked Eddie "what's that?", Eddie told him "oh, it's nothing, just my solo". Ted told him "we're putting that on tape". The rest is history.
eruption was one take all the way through. there is a video of the room mic used and I always heard that it was several takes spliced together. NOPE straight through. The producer Ted Templeman heard Eddie playing it and said what is that? Eddie said, it's just something I do to warm up with. You Really got me is a cover of the Kinks song.
You should actually do the Kinks version. As i said i think its great, but Edward made it special. Still worth a listen as it does sound more 60s summer fun

Eruption is great, but Eddie's rhythm playing is what appeals to me most especially when he hits harmonics off his thumb.
You have to understand. There was nothing like this in mainstream rock in 1978. It was completely revolutionary and, more importantly, evolutionary. Eddie flipped the chart. He created a new paradigm. Not as impactful as The Beatles. But he did help to give a new direction.

I still like this Eruption esp tied into the song. Sets it up. And yes. The Kinks did that song like 10yrs before. VH use to cover it when they played the house/bar scenes. Love the Kinks version, but sorrynotsorry this is better🤷❤
I love it. Van Halen I is one of the greatest debut albums of all time. Eruption is probably the greatest guitar solo in the history of rock.
