I could have sworn "It's a lot more difficult than uploading a photo to a website" and that subsequent chuckle was going to lead us straight in to a Squarespace Ad 😂
@@nilsp9426that wouldn't be fair at all. Julien has a certain price for the work he does at it doesn't matter if the painting is by an unknown amateur artist or Picasso. And he's very professional about it
It's a shame this series isn't getting as many views as your usual videos because these are absolutely excellent videos!! The production, editing, and content really makes this feel like a top tier documentary series.
I was very skeptical of this series because I didn't want to miss the usual videos, but this is turning out to be great :D Never had as much appreciation for the whole "selling art businesses" as I do now. I just didn't know that they do so much more than just think up prices for paintings!
And because of the publicity created from Julian's documentary-worthy video and the 100's of thousands of eyes that will see this painting that never would have otherwise, the provenance has been added to and I would think the painting's value has increased even further.
The fact that a major auction house would allow a youtuber into their building, give a personal guided tour and even invite them to the auction shows how highly regarded Julien is in his community. I am so proud of our boy!
I like how the importance of provenance was stressed. A respected auction house not only provides confidence that a piece is what it is claimed to be, but also that it was acquired in a honest and ethical manner.
That Le Pho painting is beautiful. I also got invested because of not only the conservation process but because I’m American-Vietnamese with French imperialism heritage. Seeing that meld of Impressionism with traditional Vietnamese figures and values was a delight, alongside it being a beautiful painting in of itself.
In addition, there’s always that lingering feeling when your video ends and that painting we’ve spent watching you conserve, where we know as an audience it’ll go back to its client. That sense of longing and attachment. This thoroughly satisfied that feeling of seeing where it goes after!
My first job out of College was as an assistant preparator for the Prix De West Auction at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and preparing artwork for a major auction is NO JOKE! It's a totally different and unique animal. All of the paintings and sculptures I worked with were contemporary and made within the last 10 years, so we didn't do any conservation work on them but It was very nerve wracking as a 21 year old to be handling paintings with $100,000 retail price tags, that end up selling for twice that at auction.
That was so totally AMAZING!!!! I have loved watching you restore and conserve paintings for a few years now and have gone all the way back to view each one. Now with this series I have the chance of learning even more about just how much care goes into a piece no matter where it is in the process. People care...it's wonderful to see.
Thank you! Your feedback means a lot to me. Restoring and preserving images is a great passion of mine. It makes me really happy to know that you are following this process. My care and love for the artworks creates a bond, as you can feel. Each piece has a special meaning for me and I am really pleased to share these feelings with you. It is very valuable for me that art lovers like you follow this series and share this experience. Your comments motivate me and increase my determination to create more beautiful works. Nevertheless, I always welcome your feedback so that we can continuously improve.
I am so happy to see how much growth this channel has gotten over the years! I used to watch your few minute clips way back in the day and I was always so mesmerized. You have truly made me fall in love with the arts again and I will forever be grateful to you. Keep being creative!
Just terrific Julian. I love your regular videos and live for when that final varnish goes down and we see all the restored color and beauty ... but this is a whole new level. fascinating stuff
Thank you Julian! This is like, a master level documentary I’d expect to see like, on PBS. It’s so cool to see how your work can help make these paintings so much more valuable and to see the work that goes into sending it out into the world is really inspiring.
I’ve held a paddle at a few auction (GBP hundred to low thousands) and the thrill of knowing the piece I’m keen to buy is approaching is huge. I watched the etiquette at the first auction to see how each lot was auctioned and was ready to raise my paddle when the time came. Then battle commenced. Me v typically one or two others in the room. I would sit towards the back and could see who else was bidding. They would turn around to find me, calm outside heart racing inside. The thrill of anticipation is nothing to having the winning bid. Buy the art you love. Worry about available wall space later.
Pretty awesome series Julian! The artist is Lê Phổ , and the painting is 'La Lettre' in case anyone wanted to know. Not sure what proper the Vietnamese pronunciation would be but I feel like it's not 'Luh Foe'.
Great addition to the series. Auction employees were particularly well-spoken, personable and informed. Glad to see even in a series not about conservation Julian still finds a way work it into the video.
The quality of production is amazing. Julian is so confident and so good at interviewing. It's so much pleasure to watch professionals doing their job.
honestly i rarely comment, but id just like to say this new series is really awesome. as someone who loves art but doesnt necessarily want to make art for a living id love this sort of line of work youve showcased. its really inspiring!
I already love this new video series. It is so appreciative of all that is going on around the artworks that pass through the studio. It is like a window to a whole new world for someone who never went beyond a small mandatory arts class in college (German "Gymnasium").
If I could give you a million thumbs up, I would. Thank you for sharing this experience, as I'm pretty sure I never would have seen this otherwise. I love the art world, but realize I only see a small fraction of what it is. Even though these people don't paint the master pieces, they certainly do their part to make them shine, as do you. Again, thank you so much for sharing a part of your world.
Love this new series. I have always had an "obsession" for art and yet not the pocket book to match. So to see this process from the backstage point of view is fascinating. Thanks for all your efforts to put this together. I'll bet you didn't realize your art restoration would lead you to becoming a film documentary director as well. Happy for you.....and us.
Great Video. I used to enjoy watching Leslie Hindman's "At the Auction" tv show, so it was great fun to see them in one of your videos. This is an enjoyable series that you are creating.
I thought they were terrible. The woman kept trying to insert herself into the conversation at the wrong time, and both of them had the sense of humor of a rock. Especially the man. He has a stick so far up his ass.
Amazing job as usual. This was an emergency repair. Knowing Baumgartner’s ability to repair a damaged painting, while the letter of repair is nice, I would be happy seeing his business card tucked in with the paperwork of the sale. That tells me the artwork had an issue and was repaired by the best restorer of fine art that I am aware of. Not that there aren’t others who are just as capable, It’s just that I know the quality of Julian’s work, and it is stellar.
That was great! I was so satisfied seeing that work go for so much, I can only imagine how satisfying it was for you! I know that if I saw a piece restored by you, it would instantly be more valuable to me!
Julian, your videos are always so intriguing. I get lost in them like I would an Art exhibit. Thank you for doing what you do for those of us who don't live near museums, auction houses, homes...that contain beautiful art pieces. THANK YOU!!
Please give my thanks to Hindman for allowing you to film this. I wish I could have seen this in high school or even middle school. My life would be different today. Many blessings to you sir. Again thanks for all the education.
This was fantastic! I would much rather watch any video you post than what is on the streaming services or tv. Thank you so much for sharing these behind the scenes looks with us.
I'm so impressed so far. Watching you work to document things, talk to these people, I realize how much time and planning must go into making this happen. Getting tours, and interviews, all while do conservation work. It's just amazing. Well done.
Im so so so glad that you are doing this series! Its so fascinating taking a peek behind the curtain and so much to learn here!it’s amazing! Thank you Julian, you never cease to amaze us!
Julian, I am fascinated your series and really enjoy learning about your work. And now you are adding field trips, so exiting! It is wonderful to have a look behind the scenes! Thank you for taking us along.
I could have sworn "It's a lot more difficult than uploading a photo to a website" and that subsequent chuckle was going to lead us straight in to a Squarespace Ad 😂
That's probably why he chuckled. He knew we'd clock it
We've been conditioned, haven't we 😊
😂😂😂
Lucky me for never seeing the squarespace ad 😄
Oh my gosh, I was waiting for it too when he said that!
The Dad Joke game is impeccable. "The task of auctioning these Greek antiquities must be Herculean". 🤭
This series is just incredible, such a treat to see behind the scenes like this, thank you Julian!
Hi Florian!👋 fancy seeing you here
Watching Julian's jaw dropping as the price kept going up on the painting he repaired...😂
I hope he gets a small share of the extra 100,000 dollars on top of the expected price. After all, his work could only have contributed to it!
@@nilsp9426yeah he got the amount they paid him for conserving it.
Julian’s conservation cost just skyrocketed.
@@nilsp9426that wouldn't be fair at all. Julien has a certain price for the work he does at it doesn't matter if the painting is by an unknown amateur artist or Picasso. And he's very professional about it
@@alisav8394 So you think the auction margin should go 100% to Hindman and its investors, and not to other people that work on the piece?
It's a shame this series isn't getting as many views as your usual videos because these are absolutely excellent videos!! The production, editing, and content really makes this feel like a top tier documentary series.
great to see Loki doing side jobs 😁 nice video!
This was the comment worth scrolling for 👀😄
Hahah nice one! I knew he looked familiar
Julian just casually walking in the auction room and naming all the creators of the paintings. Thats some amazing skill
I was very skeptical of this series because I didn't want to miss the usual videos, but this is turning out to be great :D Never had as much appreciation for the whole "selling art businesses" as I do now. I just didn't know that they do so much more than just think up prices for paintings!
Well, the usual videos aren’t going anywhere; a new one’s coming Monday.
I've worked at auction houses and I don't think people understand how much work goes into each lot. This is great.
yes
My dyslexic self read the thumbnail as “stealing artwork” and I thought this was going to be a VERY different video 😂
Well Julian isn't just a youtuber. He has access to his suppliers and clients as a fine art conservator. He is well known.
Julian is a man you don’t wanna mess with. He knows a hundred thousand different ways to end an artwork. He’s _dangerous._
He was an art conservator before starting youtube. He's likely done business with this company for years prior.
Uhhh... hes not simply a "youtuber." He is arguably one of the best conservators alive today
"Is it just gonna be the tear you repaired" I was so offended... Have you not seen this man at work!? LOLOLL
😂😂😂
I like how the importance of provenance was stressed. A respected auction house not only provides confidence that a piece is what it is claimed to be, but also that it was acquired in a honest and ethical manner.
14:33 that guys face when Julian mentioned the nitty gritty. “Ahh a connoisseur; rare someone actually wants to know details. I like this guy.”

"I'll need it by September 27!" Julian checks watch LOL
Most decent watches come with date and often even month, exclusive mechanical watches have ridiculous things like showing the moon phase.

thank you 😊
This series should be on a streaming service, or public TV . High quality production and infotainment!

Oh, thanks, I was sure it would not be the sort of French (vaguely) sounding unidentifiable thing it sounded like. Nice to know with accuracy.
Thanks, I was looking for this comment.

The first two episodes have been very enlightening AND entertaining! Thanks.
How does it feel to have a painting you worked on sell for almost $200k! That’s got to be amazing

Been watching this channel since 2019 love the new series

This series is lifting the veil. GREAT job!
That painting is so warm and pleasant to look at!
I really love this series even though it’s only two episodes in it so far! The production quality already? Brilliant!

Absolutely brilliant, loved this episode, so great to see behind the scenes. The quality of the documentary is incredible.
Thank you, Julian, for this amazing series!
That was great! I was so satisfied seeing that work go for so much, I can only imagine how satisfying it was for you! I know that if I saw a piece restored by you, it would instantly be more valuable to me!
How wonderful to see the synergy of BFAR and Hindmand.
It has such a pretty frame- and now we know how they're made!
This was amazing. I wasn't sure I would be able to enjoy content that wasn't the restoration process. I really loved this.
This series is wonderful - thank your for adding this to your busy video schedule!
Thank you for shedding light on other parts of the art world. It is facinating!
Its obvious that the inclusion of Baumgartner Restorations is a plus to a painting at auction.

There's something about watching a master of their craft at work that is just awe-inspiring. Thank you for the inside look Joe!
What a phenomenal episode. Holy crap.

Sorry to disappoint I just watched this on TH-cam on my TV so guess you are wrong , just saying 😅
These are really cool series! Nicely produced too! My Mondays got way more interesting now :)

Wow watching the live auction was my favorite part of the video! How magical!
Great Series!. Thank you.
The Love of Art is The Start.
Love this behind the canvas episode. Very informative. Can't wait for the next one.
Loving this new series!
I am really enjoying this series, thank you!
lmao, that knight in the back looks so done with life
Great work. Love this new series. Very well conceived, produced, executed, and edited.
Julian, another great video. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
Who did you hire for videography? Outstanding job.
Really enjoying this new series
thank you for this series. Enjoying it a lot
Im so so so glad that you are doing this series! Its so fascinating taking a peek behind the curtain and so much to learn here!it’s amazing! Thank you Julian, you never cease to amaze us!
This series is one of my absolute favourites! Thank you Julian to show us behind the scenes.
I'm absolutely loving this series . It's so informative and interesting in lots of ways. Thank you .
This series is such a lovely change, I'm really looking forward to the future episodes.
I love this series. Thanks for getting us behind the curtain
Loving this series!
really loving this series. Very professionally filmed and presented. Looking forward to more.
When Julian starts painting his own art we might get a chance at his first few before he gets famous!
Lol pre-archival ready art that would be easily restored years for now would be brilliant.
Loving this "Behind the Canvas" series.
I think that was the most exciting auction I've ever seen, mostly because of learning about art via the content on this channel
Julian, I am fascinated your series and really enjoy learning about your work. And now you are adding field trips, so exiting! It is wonderful to have a look behind the scenes! Thank you for taking us along.
I'm loving this series
This series is amazing - thank you for leveraging your many years of experience into making this bts series. Love it!!
I really enjoy the behind the scenes videos. Thank you
I love this behind the scenes series, I'm learning so much, i never thought of all this work before a painting hangs in a museum.
This was such a treat. I always leave Julian's videos feeling a little bit smarter. Thank you so much for this!
That was fascinating…so much more work is done by the auction house than I ever realised!
This was amazing, just brilliant
