I think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I have a number of Charlton and Gold Keys as well as Archie’s and Harvey’s in addition to my DC’s and Marvel’s. It’s amazing the variety of comics there were in the 60’s and 70’s not to mention the 40’s and 50’s. My goal now is to collect as many four colors as I can. Thanks for your channel, great stuff !
Thank you! For a long time I pretty much only collected Marvel and DC. There is a wealth of other fine comics from many other publishers from different eras and I'm happy to pick them up when I can.

The 70s was the most interesting period in the US in terms of the quality, genre selection and formats ranging from paperback books, magazine format, Treasury Editions and larger books like Stan Lee’s Fireside series. Not to mention Power Records comics

Born when the Bronze Age began I started collecting comics when I was about 8 years old. I can remember buying plenty of titles from the Big 2 off the spinner rack at mall book stores, drug stores, etc. But other than Whitman variants, I don't remember any of those locations carrying ANY of the Charlton Comics (Gold Key, Atlas, etc) However, as an adult collector I am very familiar with Charlton and the others and have been picking more up over the years. Thanks for sharing your collection.
Growing up, most comic book stores I went to didn't even have Charlton or Gold Key titles in their back issue sections. They're still fairly uncommon now, but it's nice to see some stores have them. Even better to hear from collectors who actively look for them!

I've been collecting for about 47 years but I mostly collect comic book original art. My favorite genre of art is romance/love (Katy Keene, Patsy & Hedy, Charlton). Another good Atlas Neal Adams is Planet of Vampires 2. I’ve got plenty of those Gold Key/Whitman Star Trek, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, The Black Hole (including the formerly very elusive #4) I like the Star Wars Whitman variants too, I didn’t realize they went as high as issue 27. And I never even heard of those dynabrites
The dynabrites are great, but they are hard to come by as they they're never advertised as dynabrites more often by the title of the individual issue. I'll have to look out for that Planet of Vampires #2!
Love your overviews and attention to lesser-known titles. You cover more range then I do but I have something of every genre in my collections ranging from Felix the Cat to Judge Dredd.
It's fun having a wide range of different comic books, especially the non-super-hero stuff. I love the superhero stuff, but there's something about the oddball titles that I find even more interesting.
Gold Key has a lot of great painted covers. I have that issue of Doctor Spektor and a few others. The cover for UFO Flying Saucers # 11 (the alien reaching through the corn for the woman) gave me nightmares when I was a kid. 😨
I'm going to have to search out that UFO issue! My next video is going to talk a little bit about Gold Key painted covers, an under-appreciated area of the hobby for sure!
Very nice installment! I too love these books and have many of the ones you highlighted. Silver Snail...I used to shop at all three locations, Toronto, Ottawa and Hamilton. I was last at the shop on Queen St shortly after they moved back. The store was a disaster, sounds like they have got their act back together and I should visit again.
It's not as good as the glory days at the original Queen location, but better than the upstairs location on Yonge. I generally only go when they have sales which seem to be 3-4 times a year. They'll post it on their Instagram account but I sometimes miss the notification.
Great topic. As an avid collector of Gold Key titles, I especially enjoyed your spotlight on them - there are some fantastic painted and photo covers. Many Gold Key issues spent years in discount bins and boxes, were carelessly shuffled around in warehouses, and are now challenging to find in high grade.
I've been collecting Turok (for the second time - sigh) and working on Don Glut's Glod Key universe titles. Dagar is complete, Tragg almost done but Dr. Spektor and Spine-Tingling Tales has been harder than I thought it would be.
@@richardmarvin8787 I have a complete run of Tragg. And also Spektor. Even as a kid I knew the Don Glut books were above average for Gold Key. I had a lot of Turoks, but over the decades, I pretty much kept the Glut line of Gold Keys. A lot I had as a kid. Then some holes in the runs were filled about 15-20 years ago when prices were often 2-5 bucks for high grade.
@@davidknight2423 Appreciate hearing about your Gold Key experience. I do have the Dr. Spektor Archives from Dark Horse along with the Dagar volume. Too bad they didn't do a second volume which would have finished the run. Been VERY tempted by Space Family Robinson. I had a complete Dell/God Key run of Turok years ago and currently have 87 of them back. Thanks to the 10 volume archives only missing ten issues that were not reprinted. I still want to finish the run. I tried Mighty Samson however I quickly realized it was for the covers not the stories so traded those off.
Steve Ditko did some amazing work for Charlton! I almost included a Twilight Zone issue I have, but it has such an interesting cover, I'm saving it for another episode.
They're really a nice format. The cover stock reminds me of the 1960s Classics Illustrated card stock covers, but the interior paper is heavier than newsprint and shows off colors nicely.
Hi, Raph! The superhero titles of Charlton Comics were actually very cool. I always thought there was a certain slickness to them. I used to have a few SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN comics. I never knew about Byrne's DOOMSDAY 1 until I came across some issues in a quarter bin during the early 2000s. Quite a few well-known artists or artists who later became popular did work for Charlton. I personally never really cared much for the GOLD KEY stuff. Never saw any of those Dynabrite comics. I remember those Whitman versions of Marvel and DC. I hated their DCs because they removed the DC logo and never had the issue number on the cover. I'm actually in the process of scooping up ATLAS titles now whenever I come across them. You are right that they once filled quarter bins like crazy. Atlas also published a couple of horror titles, which I'm sure you know about. This was a really enjoyable and informative video!
I used to have the odd Captain Atom and Blue Beetle book in my collection before, and anything by Steve Ditko is worth taking a look at. Some of the other titles like Judo Master and Peacemaker look...unpolished to put it politely. It's a little weird seeing Atlas titles priced at $5-10 in high grade. Never would I have imagined! You know, I don't think I've ever owned any of the Atlas horror titles before. Maybe Grim Ghost? Not sure if that counts!
@@raph-retro-comics - LOL! I can agree with 'unpolished' for Charlton! The ATLAS horror titles I have are SON OF DRACULA and PLANET OF VAMPIRES. Atlas also had a couple western titles. Can't recall what they are at the moment.
I've had most of my Atlas Seaboard comics since the '70s. Some I have picked up in later years. I have a few Archie / Red Circle books too, some of the Sorcery books and also Supercops, based on the movie but not adapting it. I might still have some Dynabrite Star Trek books too. As for Charlton, if you knew how many Charlton comics I had from the '70s and '80s in high grade you'd possibly fall off your chair lol! Your focus on '70s / Bronze age takes me back in time.

@@raph-retro-comics Yes. The 80s Charlton comics are harder to locate. Most of my '80s Charltons I've had since the '80s, but I have come across a few in the wild. The runs may have been less, and distribution may have dwindled too. The cool thing was Ditko was doing stuff for them up to the end. In their last year they published two issues of Mysterious Traveler, one of which had a (then) brand new Ditko story.

I sold my childhood collection during the pandemic, but now, at age 60, I'm starting to collect again. Just because of that nostalgia pull you mention. Recently bought a couple of Gold Key Scooby Doos for that reason.
It's been a bit of a strange journey. I just went to a local comic book store this past weekend that was having a sale with the mindset that I would be a lot more careful with my purchases. Instead, I got caught up in the dollar bin feeding frenzy that was going on and bought 200+ dollar books. I'm going to go over the purchases in my next video as well and talk about my buying habits, which these days can be best described as erratic. At then end of the day, I'm a sucker for 'good deals', and I like having a wide variety of different books. Nice to hear you pick up those Gold Key Scooby Doos!

So I do a lot of searching around on eBay, where there really aren't any good deals (not when you factor in exchange rate, shipping, duties, etc). I'm pretty lucky, there are a few good places in Toronto, and in the Greater Toronto Area that have a good selection of back issues. I like to seek out good deals so I usually only go to them when they have sales. eBay was good years ago, but like you said, with the amount you have to pay in shipping and taxes, it's not that great.

Charlton and Gold Key titles have long (and still) been passed by collectors. I like have a few in my collection, but I don't actively look to fill any runs of titles. Although some of the that may be a function of availability!
I've seen these on occasion before and never thought to pick them up (maybe because they were a little expensive?). Certainly an interesting title with lots of great talent!
@@raph-retro-comics You can always look for Star Reach Classics as well. Reprints of the originals, only 6 issues, and they should be relatively inexpensive.
Yes! I remember having a couple issues of Jungle Adventures that featured a Tarzan/Ka-zar type of character. I also had a couple issues of Tender Love Stories that had nice covers, but they are unfortunately long gone. I used to see them quite often a long time ago, but it's been ages since I've seen any.

In the land down under Gold Key are revered and your reader Grade copy is likely to set you back $30 AUD While a half decent Star Trek might begin at $50 AUD. Always worth a buy is Space 1999 from Charlton also hugely rare here Nicola Cuti and Joe Staton of course. A look at the great 60s line up of Charlton would also be a welcome view. Good evening Al! I think Gold Key and Charlton books are tougher to locate here in Canada compared to the US. When I watch other youtubers, those publishers seem to be a little more common, but still not easy. I'd love to do a 60s Charlton video, but as of right now, I just don't have the comic books, as I do like to show examples.
A lot of my Charlton and Gold Key comics I bought as a kid. Often they were sold bagged, 3 to a bag, and my grampa would get them when we stopped at the truck stops. All my Gold Keys were from truck stops, except for some bags that had Tragg issues in them that I bought at some candy counter on The Chi-Cheemaun ferry Manitoulin Island to Tobermory (mid '70s I think?). Some of my Charlton comics I did get off spinner racks at the corner store, like the '80s run of Charlton Bullseye. The Atlas comics I got as a kid were in 3 to a bag as well at this mom and pop store near my grandparents around '78 I think.
@@davidknight2423 Good evening david Great memories, when I was a kid we would visit my Grandmother in a small sea side village with three small shops all with Spinner Racks all packed with Marvel and Gold Key. I never had enough spending money, if any. The three packs only seemed to appear in the late 70s here. Yes sir, they seem to be very very scarce and their quality was never the best, but they had some great creators working for them. The Phantom has always been popular here, and is still published here in black and white, reprinting the Comics strips from the US and stories sourced from Europe . I was fascinated by Atlas Seaboard despite the mediocre reputation I think they might have evolved into something interesting given time. There is a new owner trying to do something in film and print now. The Bionic Woman one I had. The simple graphic on the cover reminds me of the Filmation animation style of Star Trek the Animated Series. I totally missed out on the entire romance genre because they didn’t show up in my region at the time I was getting them new.
I wondered how Romance titles were distributed on the stands back in the day. They were pretty big in the 1950s, but they seemed to have steadily lost readership up until the early-mid 1970s where they just vanished from the stands. I pretty much never see Charlton Romance at any comic book store or convention.
Magnus and Solar were pretty popular for Gold Key titles and had pretty good runs so they're not that hard to find in nice shape. A lot of other more obscure Gold Key titles are hard to find compared to those two titles. Good titles nonetheless!
For forever I thought th only thing Spire ever did was th Cross and th Switchblade. It was a constant reference point and punchline btwn me and my friends in th 80s and 90s. I guess now I'll be lookin for Hansi... she's gotta be around DFW somewhere... and even as a lifelong Cowboys fan I didn't know Spire did a Tom Landry feature until I saw th back of that comic in this video. I gotta change how I'm lookin for stuff.
A local shop had a bunch of lower grade copies of many issues that I had never seen before. I think they'll be safe for me until they have their next sale. They didn't have the Johnny Cash issue or the Cross and the Switchblade issue though.

I do think painted and photo covers are underrated! I rarely saw Gold Key books at dealer bins at conventions, and even less so in nice condition.

I liked collecting the Ditko art in Charlton books! And the Gold Keys Twilight Zone and other TV books.

I like to seek out good deals so I usually only go to them when they have sales. eBay was good years ago, but like you said, with the amount you have to pay in shipping and taxes, it's not that great.
@@raph-retro-comics You might find it interesting that, based on watching your videos, I'm starting to pick up more Gold Key and Charlton Bronze Age comics. Today, at a shop, I bought a copy of Ghostly Haunts #47 in a nice grade with a pretty cool Ditko cover. Great fun! Thanks for the inspiration.

I always equated Charlton and Goldkey comics to buying your toys from the dollar store, you might like them, but you seldom love them.
Charlton and Gold Key titles have long (and still) been passed by collectors. I like have a few in my collection, but I don't actively look to fill any runs of titles. Although some of the that may be a function of availability!
In addition to Imagine, Star Reach was another great series (same publisher). I just picked up a nice run of them today.
I've seen these on occasion before and never thought to pick them up (maybe because they were a little expensive?). Certainly an interesting title with lots of great talent!
@@raph-retro-comics You can always look for Star Reach Classics as well. Reprints of the originals, only 6 issues, and they should be relatively inexpensive.
Have you ever run across Skywald Comics? I just picked up a few copies. They had a "Conan" type guy and a romance title: Tender Love Stories.
Yes! I remember having a couple issues of Jungle Adventures that featured a Tarzan/Ka-zar type of character. I also had a couple issues of Tender Love Stories that had nice covers, but they are unfortunately long gone. I used to see them quite often a long time ago, but it's been ages since I've seen any.

Thank you so much , a great instalment. I have always wondered why Gold Key and Charlton don't get the the love in the Us? I am not sure how our friends in Canada find them. In the land down under Gold Key are revered and your reader Grade copy is likely to set you back $30 AUD While a half decent Star Trek might begin at $50 AUD. Always worth a buy is Space 1999 from Charlton also hugely rare here Nicola Cuti and Joe Staton of course. A look at the great 60s line up of Charlton would also be a welcome view.

Good evening Al! I think Gold Key and Charlton books are tougher to locate here in Canada compared to the US. When I watch other youtubers, those publishers seem to be a little more common, but still not easy. I'd love to do a 60s Charlton video, but as of right now, I just don't have the comic books, as I do like to show examples.
A lot of my Charlton and Gold Key comics I bought as a kid. Often they were sold bagged, 3 to a bag, and my grampa would get them when we stopped at the truck stops. All my Gold Keys were from truck stops, except for some bags that had Tragg issues in them that I bought at some candy counter on The Chi-Cheemaun ferry Manitoulin Island to Tobermory (mid '70s I think?). Some of my Charlton comics I did get off spinner racks at the corner store, like the '80s run of Charlton Bullseye. The Atlas comics I got as a kid were in 3 to a bag as well at this mom and pop store near my grandparents around '78 I think.

Great memories, when I was a kid we would visit my Grandmother in a small sea side village with three small shops all with Spinner Racks all packed with Marvel and Gold Key. I never had enough spending money, if any. The three packs only seemed to appear in the late 70s here. I love the story about the Candy Counter on the Ferry, My favourite was Space Family Robinson, I think I have read every issue.

Yes sir, they seem to be very very scarce and their quality was never the best, but they had some great creators working for them. The Phantom has always been popular here, and is still published here in black and white, reprinting the Comics strips from the US and stories sourced from Europe . Again great work bringing the stories forward.

I was fascinated by Atlas Seaboard despite the mediocre reputation I think they might have evolved into something interesting given time. There is a new owner trying to do something in film and print now.
The Bionic Woman one I had. The simple graphic on the cover reminds me of the Filmation animation style of Star Trek the Animated Series.
I totally missed out on the entire romance genre because they didn’t show up in my region at the time I was getting them new.
I wondered how Romance titles were distributed on the stands back in the day. They were pretty big in the 1950s, but they seemed to have steadily lost readership up until the early-mid 1970s where they just vanished from the stands. I pretty much never see Charlton Romance at any comic book store or convention.
No mention of Magnus robot fighter or solar man
Magnus and Solar were pretty popular for Gold Key titles and had pretty good runs so they're not that hard to find in nice shape. A lot of other more obscure Gold Key titles are hard to find compared to those two titles. Good titles nonetheless!
For forever I thought th only thing Spire ever did was th Cross and th Switchblade. It was a constant reference point and punchline btwn me and my friends in th 80s and 90s. I guess now I'll be lookin for Hansi... she's gotta be around DFW somewhere... and even as a lifelong Cowboys fan I didn't know Spire did a Tom Landry feature until I saw th back of that comic in this video. I gotta change how I'm lookin for stuff.
A local shop had a bunch of lower grade copies of many issues that I had never seen before. I think they'll be safe for me until they have their next sale. They didn't have the Johnny Cash issue or the Cross and the Switchblade issue though.

@@justplainoltex4991 😅 Jerry reminds me of a previous owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Harold Ballard. Brutally bad owner who was only interested in squeezing every penny out of fans instead of putting out a good team. It was the Dark Ages for the team.
