Yep, NASCAR Thunder 2003 brought me here too. So satisfying hearing this while lightning struck all the other cars in the menu. Sucks I wasn't so good at this game, and I no longer have my PS2, but this still brings back childhood memories.
This song may very well have saved my life once: I normally am not good at driving late at night; I'm a morning person, the later in the evening it gets, the more fatigue starts taking its toll on me. One night, about six and a half years ago, I was in a position in which I had to make a 3- hour drive along the interstate at night. At one point, I began feeling tired, so I cranked the radio up full blast, and 'Magic Carpet Ride' was playing. To help myself stay awake, I started singing along to it at the top of my lungs (It probably would have really been something to hear, my almost bellowing "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WE CAN FIND, WHY DON'T YOU COME WITH ME, LITTLE GIRL, ON A MAGIC CARPET RIDE"). Sure enough, it may have been a rough drive, but I got home safely. Thank you, Steppenwolf!
In my mid 60's now and this is STILL my favorite song and I admire John Kay so much for what he went through and his moral compass, and now his activism! I saw him in a little roadhouse in Sacramento area years ago when he was building up the band again, lost some of my hearing from that but can die a happy woman for seeing him in person!

Hard for a guy who remembers this first hitting the airwaves- to think that movies, games etc are what turned you on to this song. Do yourself a favor and realize that 95 % of the best music ever done happened from about 1966 until 1976. Go listen to all of it you can absorb and then read about what was happening in the world at that time. That music had a big impact on today. Such a shame that many of the comments are about video games and motion pictures that used this song as part of their content. This song was part of the content of society back in the 70's. It was a HUGE part of the scene. We didn't have no stinkin' video games. We didn't have no stinkin' VR machines. We didn't have no MP3 players. We had 8-track players and Jensen 6-by-9 speakers and WE LIKED IT !! As far as those uneducated authors of comments like "I thought the instrumental part was too long" and"The long musical part ruined the song" and other such nonsensical remarks, please let me tell you that the "long version" was something that we as listeners VERY MUCH appreciated back in the day. For instance, Light My Fire by the Doors had a "long version" and McArthur Park had a long version. Crimson and Clover had a long version. Many other songs had long versions but corporate controlled commercial radio stations were not allowed to play songs that were more than 3:52. So, it was a special treat to hear the long version on FM radio. Usually it was very very early in the morning when the DJ's would take a chance and play a long song. The long version gave us a chance to dip into our stash box and truly enjoy the toonz. It is really sad to realize that youngsters out there today (probably almost 30 y.o., but still YOUNGSTERS) don't even appreciate actual music. Go back to your sad little life in your 6" video screen on your Samsung S-28, push your earbuds into your brain and enjoy your 28th year as a teenager.
