If you tie it I'll try it! Everyone of your flies that we have tried are awesome! Thanks for taking the time and sharing with us
That’s awesome! It’s a good one and it will work for you! Thanks so much for watching. Tight lines to you!
Hi Cory - another great fly! Thanks for sharing! Tight lines!!!
Hey Philip. Appreciate it. Thanks for watching and tight lines to you, as well!
Great looking pattern Cory. Thanks for the materials lesson. Going to twist some up!
Appreciate it, Frank! It will be good to you. Tight lines, my friend!
Thanks, Cory! I am learning so much from you. I've eased back into fly tying by starting with streamers, mostly learned by watching Kelly Galloup's videos. He of course leans large, so this example of a small fry is timely. Time to head up to the Smith River and fry it out!
Glad it's helpful, Jason. Kelly is a great one to learn from. The Jiggy Fry WILL definitely get them on the Smith! Thanks for watching!
You just keep improving my tying Cory with every vid you post. Tight lines sir.
I have always used a stopper knot when I build tag rigs. But I have always used multiple stopper knots for the different depths. Using a SINGLE stopper knot is GENIUS as the ones above the lowest one is not necessary and the line is "cleaner". . Cory, a big thanks for sharing your tips. By the way, iInstead of tying 2 tippets together and cutting off the tags, I just use a figure 8 knot using the main line. What do you think? I also use a Double Davy knot to attach the tag because t takes seconds to tie on. It is also smaller, gathers less moss, and creates less drag than a perfection loop. I also use a Double Davy for attaching the fly because the 16/20 knot requires too much length to tie. A double davy requires as little as 3" , and never fails except when I am fishing for 27"+ monsters and 3X tippet.
Thanks for watching. I responded on the adjustable dry-dropper video...
Another killer video Corey! Do you tie this in any other colors?
Thank you, Sean! I stick to his original, but other colors will work (Olive, etc...). I do tie a variant of this that I call the Pearl Jam. I'll do a video of that in the future.
Cory is that the only color you tie them in? And George uses a copper on his body you like the gold better or never tried with the copper?
This is the original way George ties this. Fulling Mill changed it a bit and uses copper (and maybe even olive marabou). But I stick to his original recipe. If you try copper, I'm sure it would work.
@@OldDominionTroutBum ahhh yup iv heard of that happening before my buddy had flies changed from FM also! Well this is good to know thanks agian Cory!
Very nicely done. I love the fact that you take so much care tying all your flies. Normally I fish nymphs, but as of last year, I also started to fish streamers. I will tie this fly for the upcoming season. Do you tie Sparkle Minnows? If yes, I'd love to see you tie that fly. I tied a version I found on TH-cam and made a mess. Still vacuuming the house from bits of gold ICE Dub... ;-) Thanks for this post.
Thanks so much, Schmoonkie. Nice of you to say. Adding streamers is definitely a great tactic to have in your box of tricks. I don’t fish the Sparkle Minnow-but will check it out. Always fun when you find the random feather/dubbing around the house!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Just wanted to tell you that this fly worked well for me in Montana and Yellowstone National Park, where it caught the largest brown of my trip in September. I will tie a bunch more of this fly for next year. Thanks.
Cory, nice tie. Still not sure I want to get into tying. I’m still buying!😂 Tony
Thanks, Anthony! If you take up fly tying, be prepared for a whole new obsession!
Terrific thank you! Question what magnification glasses do you use?
Appreciate you watching! My glasses are nothing special. Just readers from Walgreens.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you. I have tried so many different things but not just readers. I appreciate you.
Cory, I live in the PNW where we don’t have brown trout. How would you suggest modifying this recipe to look more like a rainbow or sculpin fry?
Scott, You can tie this using olive grizzly marabou and black or olive ice dub and it will be a great small sculpin. You can also use a natural grizzly color with pearl ice dub and that would make a good rainbow fry (I do that as well).
ODT...just found your site and subscribed. My expertise for the last 50 years has been crappie, smallmouth and largemouth. I live in north Alabama but recently took a trip to Tellico Plains in Tennessee and I must say trout have addicted me. I know how to work a fly rod but my question to you is what is a good mid grade set up for someone who is not real experienced. I toe all my own baits and the fly's I used on the Tellico river were basically waltz worms and a modified frenchie. Both of the fly Inused were size 14 and 16 and yes before anybody asks....they were barbless. Can you recommend a food rod in the 10 foot length that would be good for nymphing and throwing fly like a elk hair caddis? I am new to this so excuse my ignorance. In 4 days we caught really nice rainbows and browns up to 3 pounds. We did catch a lot of smaller fish but the fact I am not a fly fisherman I thought I did well especially using a fly rod. I have fly fished for tarpon and bonefish so I know the mechanics of a fly rod and even know how to roll cast. Can you provide some help on rod and real selection. I really don't want to spend 1000's of dollars.
Alex, glad you got the trout bug. And congrats on your great outing! If you give me an idea of your price range, it will help me help you. Tight lines.
200-400 for both rod and reel. Also, is there a such thing as having a fly rod and reel set up that covers all presentations?
@@alexrawleigh3167 I would recommend an Orvis Clearwater 10ft 3wt rod and reel outfit. It will be in the low $400 range. You can Euro Nymph and throw dries with it as well. Hope this helps.
Cory what bobbin are you tying with here?
Kurt, it’s a Dr. Slick with a ceramic insert. No more than $15 or so. As good as any other bobbin out there.
Ha! I just wanted to tie a few of these up! Uncanny timing
Perfect timing, Mason! Good luck with them. Appreciate you watching!
Agree with comment below wrt copper bc I have a copper bugger. Also how about a Mickey Finn? I have one from my Dad. It’s 70 plus years old! I had a white/black marabou wet fly I had from him that I used until the hook broke.
Anthony, the Mickey Finn is a classic. That is awesome that you still have it! You need to have it in a frame!
Hello great tutorial your tying technics has as usual top notch for sure, I watch a kelly Galloway video the other day and I see he is heading out to your country for fly tying expos . How great if you guys could make it to the same expo. Tight line
Thank you, Kim. Appreciate it! I won’t be there with Kelly…but he is an awesome guy. Tight lines to you, as well.
Thank you Cory for explaining this great pattern to a perfection as you always do! Your the best out there period!!!
You are welcome, James. Really appreciate the comment! Tight lines to you!
