I know this is an older video, but to answer your question about the tress you saw in Tennessee and Kentucky that were blooming, assuming they were a dark pink-reddish color, those are called redbud trees. They are beautiful here (Kentucky) in early spring. Enjoyed your video, btw. This tuned out to make a very lovely spring pillow.
Great video as usual. You are very talented. I want to learn how to write with free motion. I live in Ohio, and if the trees were reddish purple in color, then they are called Red Buds and they grow wild. I also have them in my yard. If they are white trees, then they are likely dog woods. Only the white ones grow wild. Keep sharing those wonderful videos! Thank you.
This is my very first time to view a demonstration I am impressed. This is after I was told by our local embroidery club in Vryburg South Africa. Thanks ever so much.
I have done bobbin work on my old Pfaff machine. For that I had to adjust the screw on the bobbin case. The effect was very interesting and worthwhile.
This was a wonderful tutorial Julia and filled of learning tips like using a container to keep all the small pieces of fabric for the appliqués. I also had never heard of bobbin work or used freezer paper for the writing parts. Thanks so much. Oh! watching the deer 🦌 was incredible too❤️. Blessings to you.
HI, Yes the deer keeps me entertained! We have a herd of 5-6 that run past several times a day. I'm so glad you learned something new in the video! Have a great week. Julia
I have done bobbin embroidery in the past. One trick I used was to dedicate a bobbin for this only so I didnt mess up the tension for my regular threads. I marked that bobbin with a Sharpy.
Hi Julie, I find it interesting that we try a technique and then forget about it for years LOL! So many ideas and so little time... Thank you so much for watching! Julia
Hi Julia thank you for your wonderful tutorial, you always present beautifully quirky and original projects, I just love your style. I have never see the bobbin technique before and it looks real fun. My goodness you are really getting a cold blast - the view from your window is just amazing. It is cold here in the UK but quite sunny, spring has not quite arrived yet. I hope you have a cosy weekend Julia, big hugs and loves as always xxxxxxxx Dorothy 😘🙋🏻🌟❤️
Hi Dorothy, The snow is melting fast! We should have 60' by Easter. You will have to give bobbin work a try. It is really easy and adds an embroidered look. I use to do a lot of it but haven't for a long time. It's fun to revisit those long lost techniques. Have a great week. Julia
if you havent done bobbin work- or if you are using a new type of thread, i really suggest doing a practice stitch on a scrap (similar in weight to your main fabric). also, from experience... if you think you will be doing bobbin work that does require adjusting the tension screw? and you can find a SPARE bobbin case? get one you save for that- mark it with nail polish or something. once you adjust that screw it can be very hard to get it back to neutral (base tension). i just keep a spare bobbin case for bobbin work
Hello Julia. Thank you for the special tutorial. Yes, I’ve done some bobbin work, but only In straight or curvy lines. I used size 8 DMC perle cotton. On my Elna 6003 I didn’t adjust my tension. However, I did not pass the bobbin thread end through the little finger on my drop in bobbin case. It’s been awhile, so I will be experiment with bobbin work in the future, but on a different machine as my Elna is not operating. Your bird stitching turned out great. Warmer weather will come and I’m sure it will be beautiful where you live.
Hi Diane, Thank you so much for your insight in bobbin work. I'm out of practice with it but love the affect and will using it more. I'm going to try your suggestion with the bobbin case. Warmer weather is here and the snow is melting!
Very inspiring! Saw another film the other day on TH-cam about bobbin embroidery and I’m really keen on trying it out. Here in Stockholm area in Sweden we have also had some really cold weather but the few snowflakes melted during the day. Next week looks promising, right in time for the Easter. Thanks a lot Julia and Happy Easter!
Hi Eva, I recently saw a video on bobbin embroidery too. I have not done it for along time and kind of forgot about it. It was fun trying it again. I hope you give it a try. Our snow should be gone by the end of the week-temps in the 60's. Have a great week. Julia
Hi Julia, I have noticed that you are left handed @ are able to mirror write, I am ambidextrous myself & can only mirror write with my left effortlessly, & when i flip it around it is exactly the same as my right hand writing, i think you n me have quite a rare talent, as I have not come across this with anyone else, let me know if you have. JEB in the UK. love your free embroidery! Xx
That is so interesting! At a young age I realized I could write backwards with little effort and it looks the same in a mirror as if I wrote it correctly. We are unique!
I love this Julia! 🦜Birds are my favorites and this is perfect! Glad you made it home safe and that 🐱Franny the cat is happy!!! You made it home in time for snow! Hi Pam, I googled the Redbuds and I'm pretty certain this is what I saw. So beautiful! I couldn't believe they were growing wild on the hillside. It was a feast for the eyes! Our snow should be gone in time for Easter with temps in the 60's this week-yeah! Franny is so happy to be somewhere-LOL. Have a great week. Julia
stitchesbyjulia google Eastern Redbuds. I’m sure that’s what you saw. They are everywhere. Noticed today that our Dogwoods are starting to bloom. The Redbuds are starting to fade out a little in places. In a week the Dogwoods will be in full bloom. We’ve had cooler weather and storms today. It always cools down when these trees are blooming!!! Fanny’s just glad to be out of the car. Lol. Hugs.
Hi Sheila, Isn't it interesting how we use a technique and then forget about it for years-LOL. So many ideas and so little time... Thanks for watching. Julia
I am having SOOO MUCH Fun with the bag kit I purchased at your Etsy shop!!! 🥰👏, Julia. This tute is a Perfect cheery project for a gloomy weather day. Love the bobbinwork accent. Would appreciate a demo tute showing your approach to couching too. As a many-decade Californian who was reared in Wisconsin, I sooo envy your Spring and Fall weather. Enjoy!
Hi Bonnie, I am so glad you are enjoying the kit! You know all about snow in April if you once lived in Wis! We are having 60' weather later this week so most of the snow should be gone by Easter. Have a great week. Julia
This project is just so cute! Your methods always get me excited to try something new. I loved seeing your snowy view also. Hopefully you can enjoy spring very soon!
Love this. I haven’t done this kind of stitching in years either. Maybe it’s time to give it another go. Your vids are always so inspiring!! Thanks, Julia!
I envy your weather, I live in West Virginia and it's already been up to 80 degrees here. I'm a winter girl, I love it. This project is so sweet. I have learned a lot from you and I so appreciate your videos.
Thanks so much for watching! Agreed- the snow is pretty. The temps will be in the 60's later this week so most of the snow will be gone. Love spring! Julia
The white blooming trees on the edge of the woods are likely dogwood. Sometimes they’re a light pink too. There are also a deep pink blooming tree now called Redbuds. Spring in the south is beautiful, but it has its price.....PoLLeN!
Hi Cindy, I googled Redbuds and I think that is what I saw. So beautiful and they grew wild! I'm sure the pollen levels are high. No fun! Thanks so much for watching. Julia
So enjoy all of your creative videos! I want to experiment more with machine appliqué and your technique is just what I was looking for! 😉 Hello from a fan in Iowa!🤗
Hi Marian, Always so good hearing from you. We finally have summer weather here! My shop is going well. Summers are always too busy and go too fast. I'm trying to slow down and enjoy! Finally got a new video up today. Hope all is well! Julia
I like this project all the way around...the birds, banner, scrappiness and pillow application. Thanks so much! I suppose with time grabbing fabrics for each piece isn't difficult but seems like "where do I start?"
Hi Carol, I am so glad you enjoyed the video. I don't get too caught up with picking fabrics. I love the scrappy look and find that most any fabric goes. I hope you give it a try!
Me encanto !!
Love your free motion sewing and designs! I want to try this someday. Hope I can find an attachment for my machine. Thanks for always inspiring! Stay warm in that blizzard! I can’t relate, sorry....from so cal...hugs, vicki💕
Omgoodness this is so awesome! Thanks to you and others I’ve really learned a lot of new things; can’t wait to try this and sooooo many more options😀 Thank you for sharing!
So happy i found you. I am enjoying your videos. Questions.....why did you put heat n bond on top of your fabric - if it was on top how were they ironed on? How did you iron in the freezer paper - i didn’t see you use heat n bond? Why did you use freezer paper for writing rather than the tear away paper you used before? Could you have done the writing with iron disappearing ink? Thanks!!!
Very beautiful place u are living and your work is also beautiful.I am from India.I have a automatic sewing mechine but i am not able to do embroideryAre u doing the embroidery with normal stitch.
Julia, please make more of these for your shop. I’d love to buy one too. Also, where do you do your fabric shopping? You always seem to have the perfect piece for an application.
Hi Cindy, I have a couple more in my shop! Here's the link: www.etsy.com/listing/684493266/spring-18x-18-pillow-cover-with-bird-my?ref=shop_home_active_3&sca=1
Beautiful !!! I just recently found your videos and I am hooked!!! Could you tell me what thread you use when you do your freemotion sketching and words????
Hi, I am so glad you are enjoying my channel. I use regular all purpose Coats and Clark thread for top thread. Sometimes I use a multicolored thread. I usually use bobbin thread in the bobbin. Bobbin thread is polyester, slightly thinner and doesn't have as much lint. It comes in black and white. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Julia
Hi Julia! Can I ask please, when you do the writing - why do you sew onto the freezer paper and then tear it away? Why not just write directly onto the fabric without the paper? Thank you
Hi Julia, awesome project. Already watched some of your videos. Could you please, give me some substitutes supplies to work with? it's hard to find the heat-n-bond lite and Stitch-n-Tear- Stabilizer in my country. I find some supplies in the online shop, i.e hot and melt adhesive iron patch and tear away water-soluble embroidery stabilizer or washable white glue.
If the tree had white blooms (or more rarely pink), they were dogwood trees. If they were lavender (various shades, dark to light) they were redbud trees. They bloom simultaneously in April and are especially beautiful growing among evergreen trees.
Really nice, you make it look easy.... I tried this today on my new machine with a hoop and it just didn't work, the needle kept on making holes in the fabric and wouldn't pick up the stitch. I guess the fabric was too thin and I didn't start it off correctly??
Bobbin works takes some trial and error to get the tension correct. It does sound like your fabric is too thin and your tension might be too tight. Julia
Hi Julia, I've been watching the weather, especially the MN. weather. So many without power....so many inches of snow!!! Are you close to Minneapolis? We got a dusting of snow that changed to rain. Good to see you back and on line. I've done some bobbin work using Razzle Dazzle thread by Ricky Tims, made by Superior Threads. Wonder if they still make it? I used to purchase it at my quilt store. I love the variety of colors of the metallics that was mixed with the thread. Good to see you back. I hope that the sun does its work and melts off the snow. Those deer outside your window were beautiful.
Hi Phyllis, We live NW of Minneapolis, closer to Fargo, ND. My son lives in St. Paul. They got a lot of wet sloppy snow. We did too- around 8". The good thing is the temps should be in the 60's later this week and most of this stuff should be gone by Easter. Bobbin work is fun because you can use a bunch of different threads. Thanks for watching!
We lived in Minot N.D. for 4 years, then were transferred to Rudyard MI. until my husband retired from the Air Force. Meant to tell you that I like your idea about using pieces of scraps for the bird's bodies.
stitchesbyjulia Hi again. I just received my Pellon F2 . I got a decent deal on the cost with a min. order of 2 yds. thru Amazon. 72" x 20", free shipping. Now I'll probably find the other F2 that I KNOW is hiding somewhere in this craft room. :-)
Big fan of your work Julia and I'm so inspired by you. Loved this tutorial. Some questions though...(1) What is 'drop cloth' could you pls explain? (2) Is carbon paper a good option for transferring designs onto fabric? (3) Does top tension need any adjustment when doing bobbin work?
Hi Fatema, Good questions! The 'drop cloth' that I am using is a large piece of cotton canvas that is used to cover floors or furniture while painting. You can usually find it at a hardware store or somewhere that sell paint. I am finding it is harder to get a good quality however. I am now purchasing natural colored cotton canvas from a fabric store. I have tried the carbon paper but it doesn't show up very well. Give it a try- you might have better luck than I did. And the tension question- I did not mess with the tension at all on the top. Hope this helps, thanks for watching, Julia
@@stitchesbyjulia Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply to all my queries. I really appreciate that. And yes definitely helpful. Glad to have found you on you tube.
I just discovered your channel last night by accident and I'm addicted! I love your style, especially the multimedia! If you have time, I'd love to know what sewing machine you have! Thank you!

Thank you for not rushing through & letting us see the speed at which you sew.
This is my very first time to view a demonstration I am impressed. This is after I was told by our local embroidery club in Vryburg South Africa. Thanks ever so much.
Hi, I love how small this sewing community is! Thank you so much for watching and sharing this video! Julia
Hi Hope, nice to see a fellow SA'ner. I am from Polokwane.
I still have to practice so much! My stitches are all over the place!
Hi, It does take practice but give yourself grace! I't worth the effort. Have a great day, Julia
I have done bobbin work on my old Pfaff machine. For that I had to adjust the screw on the bobbin case. The effect was very interesting and worthwhile.
Thank you! Very informative. I look forward to giving it a try.
Ohhhhh! I learned SO much from this video!! Thank you!!!
tutorial, can’t wait to try this! Thanks once again.
Well, that was an eye-opener. Thank you for posting this. Very well done video, too.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow I got fascinated with your window view! It’s gorgeous and cozy.
Hi, I love my window view! Thanks for watching, Julia
Thank you for a great video. Beautiful view of deer in snow!

Hi Phyllis, Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
Thank you Julia!
this is lovely and the snow and dear just made the cherry on the top from the uk
Just brilliant thank you for your time Sandy UK
I have a Janome 15000 and I didn’t have to change bobbin tension. It is fun to do and would like to do more of bobbin work on my machine!
I have done bobbin embroidery in the past. One trick I used was to dedicate a bobbin for this only so I didnt mess up the tension for my regular threads. I marked that bobbin with a Sharpy.
Great idea!

Harbor Freight has good prices on drop clothes for anyone looking.....I found these pens but in a marker hope it works the same.
Hi Julia, this is such a fun idea, I will be trying this out soon when I get my new sewing machine. Can't wait, thank you. Xx
Yeah! New sewing machines are exciting! Happy stitching, Julia
your video really inspired me today and I made a little something, my writing needs more work but im happy with it :)
Love the tutorials! If the trees are bright lavender they are Redbud trees, if they are white they are Dogwood trees.
Really fun and cheery!
Anacacho orchid tree and bluebonnets are blooming here in south central Texas.
So many beautiful flowers and flowering trees! Spring is the best. Thanks for watching. Julia
Hi Julia thank you for your wonderful tutorial, you always present beautifully quirky and original projects, I just love your style. Beautiful and so inspiring! Thanks for the tutorial on the whole process of creating this little art quilt.
if you havent done bobbin work- or if you are using a new type of thread, i really suggest doing a practice stitch on a scrap (similar in weight to your main fabric).
also, from experience... if you think you will be doing bobbin work that does require adjusting the tension screw? and you can find a SPARE bobbin case? get one you save for that- mark it with nail polish or something. once you adjust that screw it can be very hard to get it back to neutral (base tension).
i just keep a spare bobbin case for bobbin work
3/3/2020. Just watched again. I'm hoping I get brave enough to try the bobbin work. Thanks for sharing your experience and hope with us.
I had never heard of the bobbin embroidery! Loved this whole project.

I live in TN and the trees in bloom are Eastern Redbuds. They grow wild everywhere. So very pretty right now.
We have cool snaps in the Spring - that are called:
Redbud Winter
Dogwood Winter
Blackberry Winter
They happen whenever the trees or berry canes are in full bloom. Usually about a couple to three weeks apart. You came thru about the time Redbuds were almost in full bloom. Right now, they are in full bloom here in Northeast Tennessee. Gorgeous sights everywhere. I noticed them today and they are so pretty along the roads and in the woods.

Very pretty Julia, loving that design and the colours too. Thanks for sharing them.

Hi Julia, another very creative project. Hope you didn't put the snow blower away LOL. We are in Il. and expecting snow as well.

I tend to not put the bobbin thread through the bobbin tension area, I just leave it loose it works well with larger threads
Great tip. Thanks!
I love your videos. What great ideas. I'm waiting for our "COLD FRONT" here in Florida. Wish us luck.
Florida “cold fronts” crack me up! Thanks for watching!
julia I like your videos you have such good ideas love it !!!!
Thanks so much for watching! Julia
Purple trees are Redbuds, white flowers trees either Bradford pear trees or Dogwoods, pink could be dogwood or cherry blossoms.
I live south of Nashville in Murfreesboro
I googled redbuds and I’m certain this is what I saw. So beautiful!
Thank you for showing this great idea! I've learned so much, realy beautyful!! 👍😸🐾
Thanks so much for watching!
they were myrtle trees...they are so pretty!
Julia, please make more of these for your shop. I’d love to buy one too. Also, where do you do your fabric shopping? You always seem to have the perfect piece for an application.
Hi Cindy, I will make a couple of more and let you know when I list them. Thanks for your support! Julia
Hi Cindy, I have a couple more in my shop! Here's the link: www.etsy.com/listing/684493266/spring-18x-18-pillow-cover-with-bird-my?ref=shop_home_active_3&sca=1

Thank you so much for watching! Julia
This is so cute and inspiring!
Julia
Love your videos..
Here in nc the dog woods are blooming.
Hi Julia! Can I ask please, when you do the writing - why do you sew onto the freezer paper and then tear it away? Why not just write directly onto the fabric without the paper? Thank you
Dogwood trees! Aren’t they gorgeous?!!
Loved this, so creative 🙂
Love this!!
LOVE!
Thank you so much for watching!
Love this!
If the tree had white blooms (or more rarely pink), they were dogwood trees. If they were lavender (various shades, dark to light) they were redbud trees. They bloom simultaneously in April and are especially beautiful growing among evergreen trees.
HI Carol, I did a search on Google- I think I saw the Redbuds. So pretty!
Beautiful. Thanks for your video. Question: did the freezer paper have a sticky backing? How did you get the freezer paper to stick to the canvas?
Hi, The freezer paper has a waxy back that temporary adheres when ironed. It is easy to remove. Thanks for watching! Julia
Beautiful work!
Thanks so much for watching!
I love all of your projects and especially love your voice. I'm guessing you're a fellow Minnesotan 😀
Yes I am! Detroit Lakes area. I didn't realize how strong my accent was until I started editing videos. LOL!
Love it. Can you make a tutorial just on how to bobbin thread?
Hi, Yes, I will put it on my list. Everyone's bobbins are different so it will have to be a general video. It's a lot of fun.
Julia
Beautiful…where do you find rayon cording?
I used to do craft shows in Minot. I grew up on a farm west of Bismarck. I know ND well.
stitchesbyjulia Hi again.
Thank you!
