Thailands railways deserve better investment. I feel for the poor train drivers dealing with the track in such a state.. the trains will never run as fast as they could in the more open areas
How do they even ensure the tracks are free of obstacles? I can't imagine a train passing in front of my yard with no barriers to the tracks! This is weird! And the market is the weirdest!
How do you do the track maintenance if it is under water? Also I responded to an ad for a waterfront villa on the Meaklong railway. Did I buy one of these prime real estate bargains? hahaha

I know it's 9 months late but The train that's used in the Maeklong line is a Tokyu "NKF" made by Tokyu, Hitachi and Nippon Sharyo (Yes that Nippon Sharyo), It's the same commuter train type you find in many of the Thai railway line, these are unfortunately not air-conditioned and is somewhat loud

This railroad is isolated from any other nationwide network and has no development or connection plan. The business is also non-profitable. Just a traditional local service. There is another isolated road Wongwian Yai- Mahachai. But that line has a huge plan to become a red line commuter and connect to BangSue Grand Station in the far future.

It's appalling! Slums ans shacks, right up against the tracks-which are in wretched condition. Garbage strewn about. No property standards or planning. Overpopulated and dirty. disgusting. Give me German order and planning any day!
This is the worst railway I have seen in all of Thailand, by a considerable margin. I do hope there can be some basic improvements, replace the base rock, put some new rails and ties in, it would make the ride much smoother and faster.

Are people really comfortable with buying/selling food that is sitting on the dirt ground, uncovered, outside, next to an active railroad line? Doesn’t it concern anyone that a train passes over or next to these food trays, spraying them with dirt, oil and dirty water it picked up along the trip?
I guess they do like we do with fruit and veggies to remove bug spray and fertilizer and either peel the skin away, tear off several outside leaves, and wash fruit and veggies really well. Boiling water for cooking veggies would remove dirt as well. People are likely used to the fact that the trays near the tracks carry that risk. Definitely I would prefer to buy food that is elevated and away from the tracks. One thing I noticed though is that there aren’t rodents running around the Taiwan market but when I used to go to the Italian Market in Philly and started seeing rodents running around there, I stopped going there. In fact the Italian Market got cited several times in the 1980s for uncleanliness and risky practices. I’ve seen several cats walking around in the Taiwan market walkways and they must handle the job well of removing rodents.
They may be gone nowadays but I bet it wasn't that long ago that the lavatories on some of the train cars were just a straight pipe leading out through the undercarriage. If you consider were the fruit/vegetables are placed and were such a pipe usually terminates... I see why they use a lot of hot spices and chilies.

This is only half the line, from Ban Laem to Mae Klong. The other half is Wongwian Yai to Maha Chai. There's a ferry between Maha Chai and Ban Laem.

The eastern portion of the Railway (Bangkok side) was indeed a tramway, then it got converted into a railway in the 50s.

Putting it as politely as possible, some of these communities aren't the most well off in the land of Mueang Thai.
