    This song has such a beautiful solo, how did Jimmy Page develop this? It really highlights how brave he plays, there is no set boundary. And when playing live he was adding and subtracting parts of the solos. So much light and shade in his playing

    When I listen to songs like The Rain Song and Ten Years Gone it makes me wonder how these complex compositions came to Jimmy's head in the first place. Great version. You nailed the solo

      Good thought… many musicians have told that they imagine a place first, then the mood and the feeling….if you are in the right place mentally then it would flow….the rest is matter of details . Refinement….David Gilmore described Shine on you crazy diamond…. While doing sound check etc he randomly played those magical 3 notes….. and others said wait…play that again….and the whole composition was built around that …and the whole album around that…then came the lyrics….the concept…. Necessity is the mother of Invention……but Serendipity is often the mother of creation….the great muse mother likes random sex with Time and Chance…often at the same time….enjoy.

      So utterly amazing, sometimes mind blowing, the amount of musical creation and composition that came from that era. Long story short, I don`t think we will ever see that quality of rock and progressive rock ever again. As the music scene technically advanced, the necessity of creation and imagination decreased. So blessed to have lived in that musical era.

    1:23. Howard I respect your playing and have learned a ton from you. I've been playing this song for decades and I'm always checking my work on various songs on YT. Besides I like hearing other players tackle great songs. I would modify your lead in the "Loop" at the timestamp I opened this comment with. The three notes on the D string *I* play as 0-3-2, or D-F-E, followed by the open-A like you do. Give it a whirl. It works both ways but I'm certain that's how Jimmy does it. I've always played it this way and tried to watch some live Zep and Black Crowes covers of it. See what you think. See if it's accurate to your ears relative to the orig. Thanks again. (Also - Ever notice how the double stops leading into the solo were loosely based on Band on the Run? BotR was 1973 and TYG was 1974. Jimmy always had his ear to his contemporary's playing)

    • @247GuitarwithHowardHart
      @247GuitarwithHowardHart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually... over the years I've always played it with the open D string, which rings true with the recording. But I spotted a Page & Plant live performance years ago, and he played it 2-3-2... I kinda liked it, so I included in the video. There are so many online showing it the other way. But with Page - his live "renditions" could be very different lol! Thanks for watching, and thanks for your input - much appreciated :-)
