As part of our planned series on the 1962 and 1965 wars that India fought, we invited Air Marshal Denzil Keelor to speak to Wilderness Films India. Hear this story of the war, in this clip!
Air Marshal Denzil Keelor PVSM, AVSM, VrC, KC, is a retired Indian Air Force air marshal and a hero of the Indo-Pakistani war. He was honoured with a number of medals including the Veer Chakra, the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Keerti Chakra and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. He has a younger brother, Trevor, who was also honoured for his service in the Indian Air Force. Both brothers have a Veer Chakra for the same feat of shooting down a Sabre jet. This is the first time two brothers have received Veer Chakras for the same reason.
On 19th September 1965, Sqn Ldr Denzil Keelor was providing fighter escort to Mystere aircraft during a strike mission in the operations against Pakistan. His section of four Gnat aircraft was engaged by four enemy Sabre jet aircraft and the battle was fought at a height of less than 2,000 feet from the ground where enemy anti-aircraft guns were also active. Under his guidance, his subsection leader shot down a Sabre jet aircraft. Thereafter Sqn Ldr Keelor himself engaged another Sabre jet and crippled it. Throughout the operations, Sqn Ldr Keelor was a source of inspiration to his pilots and ground personnel. His courage and devotion to duty were in the best traditions of the Air Force. For this he was awarded the Vir Chakra. The Sabre kill by Denzil earned the Keelor family a unique distinction. Both the brothers now had Sabres to their credit and both earned the Veer Chakra, making it the first time brothers had won the Veer Chakra for identical feats.

All your Indian national feelings are respected and appreciated: but, what is India fighting to get ?
      Kashmir ?
What a price to pay of 70 years of partition injustice and denial of an agreed principle.
Inter- regional peace and development would have been more rewarding.

India does not understand air power and how to use it. Because, the Navy and the Air force have generally been pushed under the carpet as it is convenient to do so given inter service rivalry and the absolute stupidity of the Neta-Babu over lords who know little else beyond how to loot and plunder the Nation. and the Army seems the closest thing to the Police they know and understand and the severest threat to the immortality of their methodologies of plunder and perpetuation. In 1962 Nehru groudned the Air force on US advise and my Dad's eldest brother's (Air Commodore R. Sitaram) career came to an end because of his vigorously championing the commitment of Air Power against China. In 1965 my Dad's second eldest brother (Air Masrhal Rajaram DFC) was sacked by Shastri for smashing Pakistan's reserves (both men and materials) at Peshawar by surprise and bringing the war to a quick and abrupt conclusion. Peshawar was almost out of range for the bombers and there were no long range fighters to provide escort, so he called for volunteers when the met report was favourable. He did not inform Air HQ or MoD of the plan as this would have immediately leaked to Pakistan and doomed the mission. (He was reinstated by Indira Gandhi). As this was a strategic contribution to victory its has completely escaped the annals of Military Historians who are more comfortable with what they understand: the battles between Infantry and Patton Tanks or, at best, the dog fights between Gnats and Sabres. Kargil show cased the woeful lack of adequate and appropriate air power for close ground support. A MIG and a Chopper were downed in the early stages due to the lack of Anti-SAM decoys and the severe imposition of US ideas by the Vajpayee regime (in a 1962 redux) leading to the effective withdrawal of air power from the theater. As on date, the Neta-Babus still believe that the correct way to conduct a war is the way they conduct their politics and gang fights in the slums or houses of legislature. By sheer numbers. Quantitative rather than qualitative and "paid to die" without the necessary equipment, training and so on. Hence the Air Force and the Navy that are more equipment and training than manpower driven are even less understood. The top Brass of these services are equally guilty by following in the foot steps of Babu Land and not pushing to fore front of winning wars but, instead asking for "toys for the boys" like an entirely redundant, obsolete and carcinogenic Admiral Gorshkov that is marooned in Karwar port without the armour, defenses, aircraft or accompanying war and logistics ships that would make up an operatable Carrier, which when operatable will be all dressed up with nowhere to go.

      @suchindranathaiyer494 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+jaganpvs Au contraire. After the Peshawar bombing the then Chief of Air Staff (ACM Arjun Singh) was summoned and admonished by Shastri. The exact words used were "Aisa kabhi nahi hona tha", to which the COAS replied "Phir kabhi naheen ho saktha hai" as the element of surprise was not replicatable. I heard this tale from FM Manekshaw and this was corroborated by Air Commodore Sitaram. (The Air Marshal had passed on from Leukemia a few days before he could take over as COAS long before I got to hear this story) Air Marshal Rajaram, DFC, was given a Padma Bhushan along side Vijayanthimala with Indira Gandhi, as Prime Minister, in attendance at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. He was always embarrassed by the Padma Bhushan which pulled an Air Officer down to the level of politicians and entertainers. That was in the days of KCOs. Today there are service men campaigning to dishonour the Field Marshal with a posthumous Bharatha Rathna. The details of the campaign used to be in the Rajaram Room at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and may still be there if not erased or modified for political convenience. What can one say of an India where Parliament stood up in one accord to erase 1948 newspaper cartoons from Government approved and published School History Text Books as recently as 2012?

1st i was really surprised and shocked to hear that this has happened. But as I dug deeper, i came to know that it was just a Pakistani perspective.
No one in the world recognises this feet by then Sq Ld MM Alam. Not even USAF or any other neutral expert.
Moreover, if you read about MM Alam by Pakistani airforce officers themselves, they write he was considered not fit for promotion due to his reckless and flashy behaviour. He was many times reprimanded for defying orders. Though they acquise this feet of gallantry they do mention that on that particular day, he got separated from his formation and returned alone with no eyewitness to certify his claims.
It does not amuse me that he was awarded Sitara-e-jurat instead of Nishan-e-haider, despite his claimed amazing feet of 5 fighters in 60secs.

One thing that must be mention is that despite the technical edge of PAF, IAF still had a greater number of Sorties.
And when calcuted from Sortie to Loss ratio. IAF takes the lead.

110 to 19 aircraft losses it a Pakistani claim.
Neutral observors put it as 95 to 47, in Pakistan's favour.
But also mention, the technical edge that PAF was enjoying by becoming member of CEATO n SENTO. And, despite being technically inferior in Air Defence mechanism, IAF still maintained an 8:1 sortie ratio against PAF.

5 aircrafts in 60secs is an almost inhuman feet and i was pleasantly surprised and delighted when i 1st heard of it. But as I read more i discovered it to be just a Pakistani Airforce claim. Sure Pakistan considers MM Alam as an ace, but that's that. No neutral observor ever complied with this claim.
And interesting fact is that i am not amused after researching all the sources that MM Alam was awarded only a Sitara-e-jurat instead of a Nishan-e-haider, for his feet was so amazing he must be awarded the highest gallantry award of Pakistan, but he wasn't.
In addition to this he wasn't even promoted beyond Air commodore, because he was deemed unfit for promotions by his superiors. He spent more time in religious affairs.
During one of his pep talks, he mentioned that on 7 September 1965, when he was about to make a 270° turn he saw a divine light and turned in that direction while doing so he saw indian jets and sprayed on them hitting them all. It was allah who made him do that, is what he claims.
With all due respect my friend, war is not some religious literature. Here things like these are utilised just for propoganda.

It is an outright discrimination, it's like a man has shown immense courage and served his men and country to best of his ability still, "Oh, you are not dead that's why you will not receive the highest gallantry award, If you'd been dead then we would have give you Nishan-e-haider". Oh Come on!
Nishan-e-haider is comparable to Victoria cross and Medal of Honor, are these awards only awarded to dead people?
Moving on, even if i take your word as truth, then the question is what about Hilal-e-jurat, why wasn't MM Alam awarded the 2nd highest award (which most Pakistanis think is the highest award given to living military men )?
Btw sir, I'll share with you what i know, when you are in ACM (Air Combat Manuvering) a fighter aircraft in 270° tight turn as was MM Alam was doing, you are under tremendous Gs. 6 maybe 7Gs, this also effects you bullet trajectory. One has to come behind his target at an exact Position and after that you can use only a few bullets as you are moving away at very high speed and losing the target which in case were the robust hawker hunters. These beasts were not easy to be downed, still 4 of them fromone formation and 5th from other, were taken out, and all that happened in mere 60secs.

Pakistan won all wars but went to US plus international bodies to end every war (see Bhutto's cry in UN against India, available in TH-cam), but didn't gain an inch of land while India lost all wars but created Bangladesh (71) & gained land in J&K (48), Rajasthan (Sir Creek plus adjoining & clicked photos in Lahore plus Valley gain (65), gained Siachen & surroundings (84-2003), Kargil (99)*
