  • Hi, this is artist Kelly Borsheim.
In this video, you will see me creating a portrait bust, slightly larger than life-size, of a man. I am working from photographs supplied by the family.
In earlier videos, especially on my Patreon page (link below), you will see the building of the armature (support system), and starting to add the clay.
I am using a wax-based plastilina (vs. an oil-based one), which is a clay that never dries out. It is very convenient for long-term projects since one does not need to control the about of water in a water-based clay, the traditional medium for artists who wish to create a bronze statue as the finished product.
The plastilina is called TAN AB-225 and I bought it years ago from John Reynolds company in the US. This is not a promotional video nor an ad, I just thought you would want the information.
As with wax (I make candles for my own use now, having sold beeswax sheets and candles until I sold that part of my business in January 2001 to become a full-time artist), temperature is everything. If the clay is too cold, it will not move easily and rubbing onto the surface will tend to "scumble" the clay, same concept as scumbling paint. That can be frustrating or desired, depending on what surface texture you want on your sculpture.
If the wax is too warm, it can become soupy. However, I prefer the feel and workability of wax-based clay over oil-based.
The important thing is to buy plastilina without sulfur in it. Not just for the smell, but because if your next step is to make a mold with silicon, the sulfur is incompatible with the silicon. Sulfur is added to some clays to make them soft and pliable.
This video is mostly in silence and mostly 2x the speed. Slow enough to see what I am doing, but fast enough to hopefully keep you interested. Somewhere about half-way through, I do talk about shaping the eyes and brows.
