I commented somewhere that the Canadian Army grew when this build started. I spoke incorrectly, it's the Canadian Tire Army! Great build, Doc, really enjoying watching you build it.
You know Doc, this reminds me of a mechanical 'cruise' control on an old ambulance myself and 2 city workers where I grew up modified to be a flatbed utility truck. It had a 'turn to lock' lever for set throttle control to cruise at a given speed or set PTO RPM for the onboard generator head. foot throttle worked as normal, the hand control set the minimum point just like your great idea. I thought of doing something similar on the HT20 but am just happy with foot control :)
Normally I'm fine with just a pedal too, as you've seen in my other projects. I have been wanting to try a tandem settable hand control for awhile, though. The thought started with MULE- When I was winching or battery boosting, I kept my foot to the floor to keep the charging system at maximum output. This diesel forced me to re-examine the idea. Let's just say I've had this handle kicking around for quite some time... Lol
Great video. I recently bought a yanmar 10hp diesel to put on one of my Massey Ferguson garden tractors. Bought engine used and it did not have the springs in the throttle lever. I’m having a hard time finding them.
One thing you could try to combine foot throttle and shut off is to do what the cub cadet clutch lever has. It basically has a little arm that prevents the pedal from coming back up maybe you could make a little lock to flip up when your ready for the engine to shut down.
I did have that thought, but decided a dash control (a variable one, at that) was more practical and convenient than reaching down. Good thinking, though!
Hello, Nice solution, I use that method also, even on gas engines because it's really handy off-road. But I agree with one of the comments below: there might be a problem caused by the cable coming out of it's location and getting stuck/ not returning completely. An easy fix for you I'm sure. 👍 Cheers from Belgium.
Doc I see one problem when you push down on that pedal and it pushed the cable up and out of the adjustments lot. It may catch and not settle back into that slot. I have had that happen on a motorcycle before and the brakes would not release until I figured it out. In your case it will catch and not be able to shut off the engine and change the idle speed which could be a pretty good safety hazard. Just a thought you might want to check on
I still got a feeling that you did Overlook one thing if you're at say Idol and you hit the foot pedal it's going to push that conduit out of the adjustment saddle and it is possible that the conduit will not slip back into the saddle. Locking your throttle wide open. It is just a possibility.
doc can you help me troy built 20 hp kohler comand hard to start dont think choke is closing past full throttle riding lawn mower hydro trany about 7 yrs old bought it new from c tire
Hello Doc ,my cub cadet diesel and mods are coming together nicely, just want to confirm my battery output , I am running a 435A interstate battery with 350 cca will this be adaquate?
@@walterschilling4512 That battery should do just fine. I used a smaller battery in my Diesel Weasel project with the same engine- no problems. Cheers!
I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but I'll take a whack at it. You need some sort of 2 stage deal that will hold the idle when you DON'T want the engine to stop, but still allow you to drop it completely when you do. "Zero" throttle will not allow the engine to idle. I got around this problem on my Diesel Weasel by physically preventing zero throttle (with a bolt) and using the decompression lever to shut down the engine when I was done using it. This DOES work but I'm not sure how often you can do that without possible causing extra wear on the decomp mechanism, rocker, or valve. So, I think it is a safer long-term option to do a 2 stage throttle instead. Hope that helps.
I will try to explain this again ,The throttle lock will indeed set the speed of the engine, so if the throttle is locked half way the engine will start, and idle at a higher speed without the pedal mod on the tractor,If I unlock the throttle and close it all the way ,will that be enough to shut down the diesel engine. Do I need the pedal mod also to accomplish the shutdown. It really is not a feat for me to fabricate your set up , appreciate your response, oh and great mod if I should say.
@@DocSprocket, Yeah we were pretty cold, but after a little bit, you get used to it. I've been up north once or twice & it's a nice dry cold we had a dry cold down here but is usually a wet moist cold we get most of the time. The funny part is that my 93 7.3idi started but after it was "warm" it ran out of fuel & died, all the fuel in the tank was all jelled up & my filter heater hasn't worked probably since new before my ownership. It's a texas truck & it never gets cold enough down here for diesel to freeze. I've been wanting to do diesel sears, or do something with lawnmowers & a genuine Yanmar diesel since I have a source of unlimited motor oil cuz my truck & these things will run on it & have plenty in the barn when my truck doesn't need it. Have you thought about using a little ether or wd40 for cold starts since there's no glowplug?
I see you have that shit vine taking over your hedge too. It’s really bad at the lake where I mow. First year I’ve seen it out there. I guess it’s a pretty bad thing as it kills what it grows on...
But what not give you a dead spot in your throttle pedal. You would have a lot of movement before it works the throttle. But then I'm not pushing on that pedal so I can't tell lol. It may not even be a noticeable amount
The "Dead Zone" completely depends in where the handle is set. At idle, the dead zone is small, but necessary to the function. Maybe 1/4" of pedal movement. If the handle is set for full throttle, the pedal is ALL dead zone. The handle overrides the pedal. Make sense now?
Why not just use the solenoid style injector that all the china diesel 10hp generators come with? Wire it to a keyed ignition switch that gives 12 volts to it with key on. Start it up and shut it off like a normal tractor. Cutting 12 volts to the solenoid instantly cuts the fuel. Simple.

My old 55 chevy had a locking hand throttle for a "cruise control" of sorts, not very safe but it worked great.
Man that's a killer exhaust
Pretty slick linkage.

If you don't mind having some electrical on the engine you can get injection pumps with a solenoid to kill the fuel
