They did listen a little, but sadly ignored the main feedback from the Zenfone 8, in that 2 years OS and security updates just isn't enough. Great review. This phone REALLY needs a serious camera update to justify the price. A 7 series chip and expandable storage for $200 less would make this a real winner.

That's is what people wanted instead of having like a "cheap" battery life *Congrats, to Asus who make it seems so impossible but possible to do it!!!*
Only 2 years support though? At this price, i cant see why you would not get an FE or pixel. Love the size though. If they had gone with the 7 series chip at a cheaper price might have been a better option? But still, Its great that we have so much choice in the android space now.

Hey, so... I'm looking for a replacement for my Huawei P20, and the options were Samsung S22 Ultra and this one, I'm looking for some gaming (Xbox game pass) and casual photos, the various lenses on the S22U appealed to me, bit it's not game changing that much. I'm not that picky with the fast charging nor the Qi, I was kinda intrigued by the s-pen for some quick notes, but nothing more. What would you recommend, considering S22U 12-256 and Zenfone 9 16-256 having both similar if not same price tag. Hope you can help me decide 🙌🏼
Thank you very much! Do you recommend 16 GB of RAM... or I will be fine with 8 GB for 3-4 years? The difference is 200 euro in my country ... so quite a lot of money.

I just wish that these Zenfones had proper shockproof case options. What I would like to do with smartphones is buy the best smartphone but also a very good case, so that accidental falls won't be a problem.

I don't need a new phone but if I did I would be looking hard at this one. I might grab it in a year when it's dirt cheap on the resale market (it doesn't get a lot of updates so I don't think it will retain its value very well)
By far, this is the only review that shows that the highly acclaimed Snapdragon 8+ gen1 is not as great as told. Maybe it's due to the small size, but who knows?
It only worked great the SD8Gen1 in the fan cooled Redmagic 7S Pro I reviewed. So far I think it's still far too hot and also throttled quite a bit in the Xiaomi 12S Pro.
Yeah tech tablets has been the only creator who hasn't been hyping it up. There's definitely some battery improvement but the thermals are only mildly different
I’ve been using the iphone SE for 2 years now. And I think I might pick this up. I want to see the pixel watch first tho cause the Apple Watch is amazing
Asus should use the snapdragon 778g instead 8 gen 1. The processor is overheating and cannot perform to its full potential. If 778g is used, no overheating and can lower the price
This phone is the exact same size as the S22 and iPhone 13 but with a slightly smaller screen due to slightly bigger bezels. It has advantages over the S22, notably the battery size (4300 vs 3700), but it also has some major flaws, mainly half the software support, but also an inferior camera and no wireless charging. The headphone jack is a plus only for those who still use it...just as Dex is a plus only for those who use it.... Also there have been reliability issues with the Zenfone 8, which is not confidence inspiring. I think that if Samsung increases the battery size in the S23 to at least 4000mah while keeping the phone just as compact it will be a much more compelling device (3 more years of support, clearly better camera as main advantages but also a bit more screen for the same size and faster USB transfer speeds
Well, the possible cons are/remain as with 8, so basically the kind of mid-tier camera performance albeit the gimbal touch on this model tries to improve the situation a bit for the main sensor... Still if eg IMX789 or IMX866 was used instead of 766 this thing comes with, and if it paired the main shooter with same sensor behind PDAF driven 130+deg wide lenses, then the Zenfone 9 would have been a lot better in terms of camera hardware... especially since we've already seen several midrangers and lower price "premium" models with multiple 50MP physically big sensors at this pricing or less (eg. Moto Edge 30 for a lower price example, Moto Edge 30 Pro or Realme GT2Pro for the similar price bracket)... This would have made far more sense since Zenfone line-up kind of offered slightly better/different photo features since their flip camera models introduction, and in this gen there's no camera-centric or camera-specific model besides this single gimbal feature. A dual 50MP good sensors would have improved camera capabilities here a lot... Another aspect, partially fixed through the slightly increased battery size would have been an added either faster charging or wireless charging capability (or both for the premium market) - nigh on all the competition in this price bracket offers one or the other or both at this price segment, and even if Asus might try to repute this requirement with the smaller size argument, we still need to remember that even smaller iPhone 13 Mini manages to squeeze the coil on the back, so basically Asus could have added a mm or less of thickness to add wireless charging capability and move into premium-like segment in terms of features... Or they could use the wired fast charging tech they've tested/developped/used in ROG Phone 5 and later, that's basically the same or close-by department so R&D must have been shared within the corporate umbrella, a 65W charging would have improved the product's status in the public opinion greatly, even if eg. by default only 30W trickle charging mode was enforced unless a user selects the high power mode... Asus could even sell the phone with the current base 30W brick that they might have overstocked and lying on their shelves but at least give consumers option to use PD3/QC5 3rd party or Asus-branded faster ones for the quick top-up seekers. In this price segment either charging option is kind of nearly expected of the product. Another are of improvement, since we're focusing on efficiency in the smaller phone, an LTPO2 or better screen should have been used to better utilise available smaller battery capacity - it might be a small thing, but having more power-efficient screen would benefit the smaller device greatly. Heck, while having top-range SoC might be great, after all it's quite a capable device until thermal-throttling takes place, I wonder if dropping to MT Dimensity 8100 or SD7g1 would have improved overall experience by offering similar burstly performance but maybe being less thermally throttled... after all Asus already has the ROG line for the gaming/performance crowns, maybe a cheaper and slightly weaker SoC could make such a smaller device even better in the grand scheme of things. And the last aspect that's just a pure fail remains the same - Android updates/upgrades support... Nigh on all the devices at this price range are being offered with at least 3 years of upgrades and 4+ years of security updates, and that's with companies that release dozens of devices a year. Asus releases 2-3 devices per yearly/biannual release cycle, at least one gaming oriented under ROG subbrand and another for regular users under Zenfone line, so dedicating resources to support them for longer the minimal 2Y would have been welcomed at this price/market segment. Heck, several competitors already started offering up to 5+Y updates support at the same or lower product tiers/prices. While the rest of the possible points are nearly impossible to fix after the engineering stage, let alone mass production one, this small aspect could very well be added by Asus at any time, they're just expecting users to follow the 2Y product replacement scheme usually in place with carrier contracts. Instead, they should at least "promise" now longer support, even if after the 2Y it'd be only security updates for the next 3Y, it's still something and better than nothing. Sure, the current 2Y(+1Y) is vastly better than all the cheap Chinese brands offer, but we're talking of different price segments and expectations...
I am really not sure why people fuss about a 3.5mm jack these days. Having migrated to BT earbuds, I wouldn't go back to wired earbuds. I don't think the camera performance is up to scratch, either.
True BT is great now the only issue is latency for gaming with 3.5 headphones there is no delay at all. I agree about the camera it needs some software tweaks.
yeah but 2 os updates of software is an absolute joke The zenfone releases on Android 12 But Android 13 is due for release next month, then in a year's time it will get Android 14 and then that's it, no more support for a £700 phone, while most other flagships will have another 2-3 years of support
Funny things is the Avery consumer associates a smaller display as a lower quality product (this isn't true of course) but that's the perception Apple had to drop the mini because of this
Because unfortunately that used to be true until recently. Smaller phones were always compromised in the battery and occasionally in camera department.

Asus should use the snapdragon 778g instead 8 gen 1. The processor is overheating and cannot perform to its full potential. If 778g is used, no overheating and can lower the price
CPU is not snapdragon 8 gen 1
Is the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1
🤨🤨🤨🤨
I tried getting mine unlocked then it no longer turns on, i then had to get one MyWorldPhone for half the price.
An even smaller phone is the Cubot Pocket. But it looks like a phone before the smartphone era.
The Asus is 3,4 mm narrower than the Iphone 13 and thats something you feel direct.
@@iammarceljansen I don't want a narrower phone, phones are narrow enough, I want a shorter one or at least not longer
Please make a comparison betwen ultrawide smartphone cameras for vlogging
I love the phone.
Great phone and Strong Camera 👍
How much my dear
wish it had 12mp telephoto for working portrait
does it use external microphone by default?
Thanks, are there other (bigger) phones with a 6-Axis Gimbal?
Vivo IQOO 10 Pro and X70+ Pro.
@@Techtablets Thanks, I will have a look!
Where can we buy it from?
The camera footage looks a bit over sharpen. Is it phone itself or youtube?
Disappointing that it's just USB 2.0 and no display out - GSMArena says that it was USB 3.0
Hi, which Sony sensor is used for the main camera, thanks
Does it come with a pre-installed screen protector?
I am really not sure why people fuss about a 3.5mm jack these days. Having migrated to BT earbuds, I wouldn't go back to wired earbuds. I don't think the camera performance is up to scratch, either.
True BT is great now the only issue is latency for gaming with 3.5 headphones there is no delay at all. I agree about the camera it needs some software tweaks.
Compact phone era
song with no voice in speaker test, no fighting and a non-demanding zone in Genshin. thoughts on the button..... why not?
yeah but 2 os updates of software is an absolute joke
The zenfone releases on Android 12
But Android 13 is due for release next month, then in a year's time it will get Android 14 and then that's it, no more support for a £700 phone, while most other flagships will have another 2-3 years of support
Pro with periscope camera would be great
14:05 the From camera is actually sharp
Hello, does it have a LED Notification?
Funny things is the Avery consumer associates a smaller display as a lower quality product (this isn't true of course) but that's the perception
Apple had to drop the mini because of this
Yes which is very silly!
Because unfortunately that used to be true until recently. Smaller phones were always compromised in the battery and occasionally in camera department.
