And a swing! There are tons of concert pianist's videos out there, where they place it at about the right tempo, but they sound rigid (classical players trying to play outside their genre). It's gotta bounce, and it's gotta swing...it's gotta sound fun!

This is one of the first songs I ever knew by heart as a child. I would stand holding on to the side of mom's baby grand and watch her play and was fascinated. I'd crawl underneath to see the pads hit the big coils of wire. She was born in 1905 and had me in 1951 and I was so fortunate to be given her love and vast knowledge of music. She could play anything from Mozart and Beethoven to stride boogie to When Rebecca Came From Mecca. If she was in the room with a piano there was an instant party. Jeannette lived to be a few months shy of 100, and I'm so grateful for the love of music that she gave to her 'old egg.'

Great to see that right foot PLANTED on the floor. Very light clean sound with no sustain pedal. A bit swinging and syncopated, I thought it was just right. I think that players who primarly play Chopin won't understand why you need a simple clean style to play rags. Also, a nice moderate tempo that seems just right. Beautiful.

I love the piano & having learnt age 11 & really enjoyed & embraced it & played many a classical piece. My teacher then, well, she was fabulous.
Sadly, I had a very poor school teacher from the age of 14/15, & I could no longer carry on.
I'd dearly love to play again someday.

A little more jazzy than probably what Scott Joplin intended, but very good. Cory plays the repeat of the second part 8va (an octave higher) than written. I approve!

Great, better than straight rhythms. Lot of energy. What's more, it's kinda jazzy ;)

I finally subsribed to you. It's interesting how you investigate and then play it with your gut feeling in how the composer should have played it.
Was the 2nd half of this song composed by Joplin, because I've only ever heard the 1st part of the Maple Leaf.

Dude....I'll hand it to you....that was totally sweet. Very clean. Nice work.
I would recommend that you not get so bent about people performing this at a different tempo. It's OK to deviate from the composer's intent...provided you don't then disrespect the folks who play it at that speed intended.

i love this music, i love the period of time! the late 1890's summer time, a band playing a park, kids playing without fear, a trolley car heading to a park, 4th of JULY! SPANISH AMERICAN WAR! REMEMBER THE MAINE! the splendid little war. i also like the pineapple rag.

I am wondering if I should learn this piece. I have been playing the piano for 10 years and have a month to learn this. I have played another Joplin piece before, but ragtime really isn’t my forte. I might still try since this doesn’t look difficult

    • @TheAvenstar

It isn't. Especially if you're accustomed to flat notes. This piece has four, then five. I believe.
