No not always, its bad for native plants. Many of the grass species we plant have no benefits for wildlife and is bad for the environment cause we water it sooo much and pesticides and others.

I remember natural grass from my childhood of fifty years ago. It grew naturally and the cows my grandmother had were the lawnmowers! No watering, no fertilizers, no caring; just leaving them alone. No worries about weeds. That has been replaced with all kinds of other grass. Feeling sad - and lost!
