Meh. MGS has already had a remake on Gamecube, Kojima is no longer part of Konami and Bluepoint seems to work only for Sony although it is an independent studio. Imo it's unrealistic to think about it. A remake of Demon's Souls or any license owned by Sony makes more sense.
one of my fondest memories of shadow of the colossus wasn't actually any of the boss fights, nor the story. it was exploring the world and finding massive pieces of land that served absolutely no gameplay purpose, but rich in atmosphere. I remember a specific area in particular, I don't remember where, but it was this giant grassland with a pond and a tree in the middle. there was absolutely nothing of importance in it, but the fact that it existed made the world feel far more alive and believable than any game I've ever played (before or since)

Nope. He whines way too much about framerate and blows its importance completely out of proportion. Also, he makes the mistake in these reviews of spending more time highlights the games issues than he does its positives. No matter how infrequent the issues are, he'll still spend the same amount of time talking about the negatives as a game with lots of issues, or a moderate amount.

But the remake kind of shits on the the original's art style and feel, as well. The dreamy bloom is gone, the color palette is too "realistic" and so on; the visual atmosphere of the original is almost completely gone. Even the colossi look worse (in my opinion).
I thought the same, but if you have 4k oled game looks insane, those texture details in cinematic mode not to be missed for slight drop in fps!! same goes for Last Guardian

The charm is completely absent though. Everything is too bright and alive, it's not SUPPOSED to look clear and bright and colorful. It's supposed to look like a fading dream realm with dead grass that hasn't been explored for eons.
+Antiform It's because of people like you that we can't have nice things. I'M SURE that if the game was created today that Ueda would add grass over his game because the console can do that. The Playstation 2 was a weak console, so adding grass to the game would make the game almost unplayable. The fog was only truly there because again, the PS2 was weak. It can't render all the details in the distance so adding fog helped the game for running in a ''decent'' framerate. You're the same type of person that will critics the mind of artistic creation like George Lucas with The Phantom Menace. If nobody would have complained about the movie, then we would have one of the best plot twist in the franchise but noooooo, fanboys like you will always complain for HIMSELF, and that's a true shame.

Like rayman revolution, tomb raider anniversary, shadow of the colossus 2018. However, not all remakes have to be the same like their original. Tomb Raider Anniversary for instance uses remade levels but somehow different, but the story is the same and it's levels are close to its original design. Rayman Revolution uses a complete different game engine than its original and REMASTERING some levels up like replacing 2d sprites with 3d moddels and added some polygons into the rayman moddel. Also they added and removed some content. Like the hall of doors (removed) and the teensie circle (added) Shadow of the Colossus had been remade like an exact copy of its original. But with new technology and a complete new game engine (which was explained in the video) However, they kept the main game exact the same. Music included (which is REMASTERED)
I have to buy it now, this much attention paid to such a classic game deserves support. Props to Bluepoint, I have enjoyed every game they have remastered.
Yup, the thrill of looking for the next colossi and getting chills when I felt I am getting near. The beauty of the first playthrough was you had no idea what you will run into and how to defeat it. Sometimes I just stood there watching the colossus, wandering how the fuck do they expect me to kill that
It's interesting. Consoles will always be underpowered.but when it comes to effort and talent that comes into these passion projects , it almost doesn't matter. May it be Mario Kart 8, Horizon Zero dawn, or halo 5. These games look amazing and hardware was just the platform it was made on.

As a Xbox gamer sike!!! I play on all consoles but mostly Xbox. This game is a god damn. MASTERPIECE. Any body that talks trash about this has no taste, and they're not a gamer. May not be your type of game, but that does not warrant you right to talk about it especially if you've never played. Truly beautiful remarkable game. A pure classic.
Bluepoint Games went above & beyond the call of duty (no pun intended) to bring us this PS4 remake. Everything looks new yet still very familiar to anyone who's spent countless hours in the Forbidden Lands. While we didn't get an expansion of the map & some of the cut colossi put back in the game, there's still some nice extras. With the 20th anniversary just a year away, perhaps we'll still get that Definitive Edition. Now that SONY has Bluepoint Games, hopefully we'll also get a full remake of "ICO". Nice review/discussion.
This was the first game that I bought when I got my PS5, and what a way to start my PlayStation journey. Yes, it’s not a next-gen exclusive, but it genuinely looks like one and introduced me to what makes Sony’s games so unique and special.

MadFinnTech true but I don't think any console would be able to do that. Maybe one x, but I don't think it would be at native 4k. Also theres a trend with games that run in 60 fps on pro and such, all of them are not demanding on the CPU, the CPU is always the bottleneck in most games if they try to go above 30
2:56 As a reminder, this remake is running on Bluepoint’s in-house game engine. As someone learning how to code a simple game fully in C++ I cannot imagine how involved it must be to program a fully featured game engine, much less one as powerful as this.
Last console I had was a PS2, and that's like I dont know how many years ago. Ever since I've been a pc gamer, but this remake made me buy a PS4 just for that. Totally worth it, the console also has some great first party games.

Bluepoint is an awesome company. They did a great job with the MGS HD Collection for Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita. The vita version does have some occasional dips in fps, but i still love playing it. I would love to see bluepoint come back to release a MGS HD Collection for the Nintendo Switch. The work they did on the Nathan Drake Collection for PS4 is also outstanding. They could have left all games as is and released the games in higher resolution, but actually polishing up the first game so that it looks allot more on par with the 2nd and 3rd game visually just amazes me of how dedicated they are to their craft. I own SOTC/ICO collection remastered on PS3, but i still haven't gotten around to playing those games. Now with this remake i will likely play this game and last guardian at one point cause this just looks amazing.

Agreed. If any one game needs to be remade, this is the one! And remasters can comfortably co-exist alongside all the new games. As there are more new games coming out for PS4/Pro and PSVR this year, than for Xbox one and Switch combined. So no need for anyone at all to decry this as causing lack of new games. Just dont buy remakes/remasters, if that isn’t your thing. Simples!
Such a classic. Anybody with a few hours of time on their hands should check this game out. I highly recommend playing it alone and without internet opinions/help. It's such an amazing atmosphere experience that is quite rewarding till the end.

I would normally agree, but I specifically locked Hellblade to 30fps so I could max out the settings and run it Super-sampled @1620p. The gameplay isn't very fast-paced and I feel the graphics of that game are more important than most games.
Couldn't play this back in the day as I didn't have access to a ps2. Just picked it up and am blown away by its size and scope... almost feels more epic and ambitions than many modern games. I've never interacted with objects/ creatures of this scale in any game that were this dynamic and well designed. And the gameplay? The way the character feels as he scrambles across obstacles lends a sense of struggle that is wholly unique. Now I get why this thing is so highly praised.
they ruined the forgotten land atmosphere though. the lack of fog and the lushness of the grass makes it seem like a happy place which it isn't meant to be. If you prefer the melancholic vibe which fits the narrative i'd get the ps3 version (if you can handle frustrating physics , otherwise a ps2 :P)
That waterfall shot was damn beautiful. I played the game on ps2 and don't ever remember that scene. Of course, that was a while ago. Can't wait for this next Friday. Just wish I have a pro to see it in all it's glory.

I will get used to 30fps if I stop playing other games on pc until I beat this one, but there is no doubt in my mind that this game could have run at least at 45fps on base Ps4 with a slightly reduced AA and resolution. Still a masterpiece though.

I'd say gameplay > graphics. If those remasters and remakes shows us something, it's that those games were already amazing even before the added visual goodies. An old Super Mario game is equally enjoying to play as a brand new, eventhough the new one looks better. It's not just the HDR, extreme details or better models that make a game a compelling experience ; it's the art style and visual choices within.

yes, i would agree, forcing someone to have a 400$ investment for one game is extremely difficult to justify, theres really no reason this game could not be on other platforms other than its just not, the developers lose out on a good deal of sales from other playforms as well, but i do understand that without exclusives thered really be no reason to choose one over the other unless one had a cheaper online subsctiption or the other was significantly more powerful, theyd have to compete directly and they dont really want to do that.

I wish Microsoft would focus more on exclusives and give me a reason to buy one of their consoles but at the moment, I only have 3 reasons. 1- Ultra HD bluray player 2- Forza Horizon 2 and most importantly 3- Halo Masterchief collection and Halo 5. Everything else they make I can play on PC. I really feel like they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit by doing that. At this point, I just want them to put Halo on PC instead of giving me a reason to buy an Xbox One.

Hey DF. What about the textures? It seems like you completely overlooked it. IGN made a comparison between Performance and Cinematic mode and there is more to it than just fps and resolution. The textures are greatly improved in cinematic mode. I’m disappointed you didn’t take a closer look and talked about it.

As a Xbox gamer sike!!! I play on all consoles but mostly Xbox. This game is a god damn. MASTERPIECE. Any body that talks trash about this has no taste, and they're not a gamer. May not be your type of game, but that does not warrant you right to talk about it especially if you've never played. Truly beautiful remarkable game. A pure classic.

Bluepoint Games went above & beyond the call of duty (no pun intended) to bring us this PS4 remake. Everything looks new yet still very familiar to anyone who's spent countless hours in the Forbidden Lands. While we didn't get an expansion of the map & some of the cut colossi put back in the game, there's still some nice extras. With the 20th anniversary just a year away, perhaps we'll still get that Definitive Edition. Now that SONY has Bluepoint Games, hopefully we'll also get a full remake of "ICO". Nice review/discussion.

This was the first game that I bought when I got my PS5, and what a way to start my PlayStation journey. Yes, it’s not a next-gen exclusive, but it genuinely looks like one and introduced me to what makes Sony’s games so unique and special.
John, amazing work as always. I never played the original but just watching the intro of the video with your retelling of playing the game gave me chills, and I can't wait to pick up the game on release day.
As a long time fan of the game, this looks incredible. I am aware some fans might not like the game's new look and can respect that, but I am very excited to play this.

Also theres a trend with games that run in 60 fps on pro and such, all of them are not demanding on the CPU, the CPU is always the bottleneck in most games if they try to go above 30

2:56 As a reminder, this remake is running on Bluepoint’s in-house game engine. As someone learning how to code a simple game fully in C++ I cannot imagine how involved it must be to program a fully featured game engine, much less one as powerful as this.

Last console I had was a PS2, and that's like I dont know how many years ago. Ever since I've been a pc gamer, but this remake made me buy a PS4 just for that. Totally worth it, the console also has some great first party games.

Bluepoint is an awesome company. They did a great job with the MGS HD Collection for Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita. The vita version does have some occasional dips in fps, but i still love playing it. I would love to see bluepoint come back to release a MGS HD Collection for the Nintendo Switch.
The work they did on the Nathan Drake Collection for PS4 is also outstanding. They could have left all games as is and released the games in higher resolution, but actually polishing up the first game so that it looks allot more on par with the 2nd and 3rd game visually just amazes me of how dedicated they are to their craft.
I own SOTC/ICO collection remastered on PS3, but i still haven't gotten around to playing those games. Now with this remake i will likely play this game and last guardian at one point cause this just looks amazing.
Armature did the vita version though, which is also an excellent remaster company.

As there are more new games coming out for PS4/Pro and PSVR this year, than for Xbox one and Switch combined. So no need for anyone at all to decry this as causing lack of new games. Just dont buy remakes/remasters, if that isn’t your thing. Simples!

Such a classic. Anybody with a few hours of time on their hands should check this game out. I highly recommend playing it alone and without internet opinions/help. It's such an amazing atmosphere experience that is quite rewarding till the end.

I would normally agree, but I specifically locked Hellblade to 30fps so I could max out the settings and run it Super-sampled @1620p. The gameplay isn't very fast-paced and I feel the graphics of that game are more important than most games.

Couldn't play this back in the day as I didn't have access to a ps2. Just picked it up and am blown away by its size and scope... almost feels more epic and ambitions than many modern games. I've never interacted with objects/ creatures of this scale in any game that were this dynamic and well designed. And the gameplay? The way the character feels as he scrambles across obstacles lends a sense of struggle that is wholly unique. Now I get why this thing is so highly praised.

they ruined the forgotten land atmosphere though. the lack of fog and the lushness of the grass makes it seem like a happy place which it isn't meant to be. If you prefer the melancholic vibe which fits the narrative i'd get the ps3 version (if you can handle frustrating physics , otherwise a ps2 :P)

I will get used to 30fps if I stop playing other games on pc until I beat this one, but there is no doubt in my mind that this game could have run at least at 45fps on base Ps4 with a slightly reduced AA and resolution. Still a masterpiece though.

I'd say gameplay > graphics. If those remasters and remakes shows us something, it's that those games were already amazing even before the added visual goodies. An old Super Mario game is equally enjoying to play as a brand new, eventhough the new one looks better.
It's not just the HDR, extreme details or better models that make a game a compelling experience ; it's the art style and visual choices within.

yes, i would agree, forcing someone to have a 400$ investment for one game is extremely difficult to justify, theres really no reason this game could not be on other platforms other than its just not, the developers lose out on a good deal of sales from other playforms as well, but i do understand that without exclusives thered really be no reason to choose one over the other unless one had a cheaper online subsctiption or the other was significantly more powerful, theyd have to compete directly and they dont really want to do that.

Maybe Microsoft will soon realize that they underestimate the value of the well made AAA titles ... we should already have at least a new Fable and a Black & White ... yet they waste both of these titles. I agree man. I wish Microsoft would focus more on exclusives and give me a reason to buy one of their consoles but at the moment, I only have 3 reasons.
1- Ultra HD bluray player
2- Forza Horizon 2
and most importantly
3- Halo Masterchief collection and Halo 5.
Everything else they make I can play on PC. I really feel like they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit by doing that. At this point, I just want them to put Halo on PC instead of giving me a reason to buy an Xbox One.

There's lots to like here, but by adding detail, the alien, desolate feel has been lost I think. I still prefer the original.
Digital Foundry since the beginning has all been about technical analysis but to be honest here you guys even does game analysis and review better then most video game sites out there. Jesus you guys are pro and understand video games in both story telling, atmosphere and shows appreciation to art more then any others out there, not just technical.
Hey DF. What about the textures? It seems like you completely overlooked it. IGN made a comparison between Performance and Cinematic mode and there is more to it than just fps and resolution. The textures are greatly improved in cinematic mode. I’m disappointed you didn’t take a closer look and talked about it.
