Mecca is the capital of Mecca Province in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia; it is the holiest city according to Islam. It is 70 km inland from Jeddah on the Red Sea, in a narrow valley 277 m above sea level. Its metropolitan population in 2022 was 2.4 million, making it the third-most populated city in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh and Jeddah. Around 44.5% of the population are Saudi citizens and around 55.5% are Muslim foreigners from other countries.
What to see in one day in Mecca?
•The Abraj Al Bait Towers, located near the Grand Mosque in Mecca, is a complex of skyscrapers featuring the iconic Makkah Royal Clock Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world with the largest clock ever built. This modern complex offers luxury hotels, shopping malls, and essential services for pilgrims, making it a landmark of Mecca.
•The Mecca Library (Maktabat Makkah al-Mukarramah) is a historic and cultural site located near the Grand Mosque in Mecca. It is believed to be built on the location of the house where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born. The library holds significant religious and historical importance, attracting visitors and scholars who come to learn about Islamic heritage.
•The Kaaba is the most sacred site in Islam, located at the center of the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is a cube-shaped structure covered with a black cloth called the Kiswah, embroidered with Quranic verses in gold. Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during their prayers (Salah), and it is the focal point of the Hajj pilgrimage.
•The Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Abraham) is a sacred site located near the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque of Mecca. It is a glass and metal enclosure that houses the stone bearing the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him). •Jabal al-Noor (Mountain of Light) is a mountain located about 3 kilometers from the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is most famous for being the site of the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received his first revelation from the Angel Jibril (Gabriel).
•Ghar Hira (Cave of Hira) is a cave located on Jabal al-Noor (Mountain of Light) near Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It holds immense significance in Islam as the place where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received his first revelation from the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) in 610 CE.
•Jannat al-Mu’alla is a historic cemetery located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, near the Grand Mosque. It is one of the most significant burial sites in Islam, as it is the resting place of many important figures from early Islamic history, including the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) mother, Amina bint Wahb, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, and his wife, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.
•The Mosque of Jinn (Masjid al-Jinn) is located in Mecca, near the Masjid al-Haram. It is famous for the Islamic tradition that a group of jinn listened to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reciting the Quran and converted to Islam.
