  • Crustaceans, with their hard, protective outer skeleton and highly specialized limbs, are truly evolutionary wonders. Join Scripps Oceanography marine biologist Jennifer Taylor as she describes her research on crustacean biomechanics and tells us how 500 million years of evolution has shaped crustaceans into the remarkable array of animals we see on Earth today. I'm not a scientist by any means, but at 34:15 the ONLY thing i am now curious about is what it would feel like if a mantis shrimp punched my finger. Could he break it? Torch it off my hand with the force of a burning sun? Where can i find a mantis shrimp? How do i get it angry enough to attack me like that snail?

      You would definitely have a gash of some sort, there's a reason why they're called thumb splitters. I believe there was case of somebody having his finger amputated due to one of the little bastards.

    disapointed :( I believed in the title, that it wouodl be about crustaceans and not only about malacostracans :(

      Bioshyn Insects and crustaceans are both arthropods, but crustaceans are not insects and insects are not crustaceans. Insects only have 6 legs, while crustaceans normally have 10.

      I remember learning.from a few scientific papers that insects are in a group called “Pancrustacea” along with crustaceans

      @Some Kind of Rodent
      The insect and crustacean groups both diverged from the same primordial arthropod group.
