A great ending for the first season and lots to think about until the next one gets here. Let me know what your big questions are so I can include them in my Season 2 Questions video. I'm curious about Sims and his wife, Paul Billings, and what Bernard's next moves will be. Did you catch Hugh Howey's cameo in the finale? twitter.com/PetePeppers/status/1674593181319708672?s=20
My big question is who came out with the rules if a silo citizen ask to go outside they must go outside?? Even if they do why in a suit? Why not just send them naked, save some clothes??
They trick people into cleaning so they can get rid of more like minded people it's actually pretty brilliant if you think about it. Anybody who asks to go outside might be suspicious of what they are being told and would most likely talk to somebody about it and the easiest way to get a signal across is to clean..
How did Walker know that poor tape quality is the reason all the other people died? She must have known exactly what’s happening if she left her apartment for the first time in decades just to ask Supply to give Juliet the good tape. Yet she presumably shouldn’t really know anything about the suits since she hasn’t witnessed a silo exit or looked at the giant display in 25 years. For all Walker knows, the suits could be full of poisoned air so Juliet needs more openings in the suit to survive? It just seems a little odd that Walker knows exactly what’s going on and how to fix it. It also seems illogical that Bernard would let Juliet go through the usual exit ritual with spectators. He knows she saw the hard drive and doesn’t believe the display in the helmets is real, so she’s unlikely to fall for it and clean. It seems unlikely he would risk it with all those people gathered to watch her. Seems it would be easier to push her over the railing like they do with so many others.
as a non book reader, i found the revelation of multiple silos unforgettable and really extremely well written how each silo is constructed to have a hill to prevent seeing beyond .
Yes! So amazingly written! As a non-book reader, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Something happened to their atmosphere so the Silo is the safest, but why lie? Why not tell people wtf is going on?! Like why erase history?
I have not read books but I guessed multiple silos in 1 st ep only. Its the most common trope in dystopian sci fi. Survivors in dystopian worlds r scattered at multiple locations in almost all dystopian movies / shows I have seen. Walking dead , resident evil etc r just some examples off the top of my head.
The end was so satisfying. I was screaming for her to take the suit off the entire time until i realized the tape was gonna keep her alive. I expected maybe a few silos but their is tens or even hundreds! wow. What a nice finale.
Well the 18 on the key chain indicates that they're silo 18. I was with you wanting her to take off her helmet but I didn't like that it was just bad tape being the sole reason why people die while cleaning.
@@Kenny_G_Loggins The suit would use the same locking mechanism for the wrists as the helmet and typically you use the tape as backup because you use your wrists more then your neck. It would make more sense if there were holes in the air hose or something but for the sake of convenience to the story I can see why the author picked tape.
When he realized she knew the screen in her helmet was false, he only started running to that room after she kept walking on. He didn’t think she would keep walking on not knowing that the tape was switched. Once he realized she had the capacity to keep walking he ran to that room which is probably an area where the ones in the know can communicate with other silos, hence the device/key with the number. If she kept walking and appeared in another silos camera viewpoint, it can cause a domino effect of repercussions in other silos as well. He probably needed to tell those in other silos what is happening for them to shut their cameras off and keep the lie alive.
His body is exactly where they can see it from the cafeteria. She put his badge on the body to show that. Even though it looks like a rock through the visor she could tell that he was there when she reached out her hand.
I really loved the fact that Juliet managed to get the sheriff's badge and placed it on Houlston's body when she was outside. Also really loved how she sent her silo into a meltdown when she refused to clean the camera lmao.
@@mosestekper7659 She kind of remembered where the bodies were and when she stumbled on one, she bent down and felt the body with her hand since the hologram prevented her from seeing it. The she pinned the ID on Holston's body. (In the beginning of the series, we see Holston stumbling on his wife's body, then he removes his helmet and sees her since the hologram was not showing her body.
@@TheReal-ny6ei I think they were otherwise she wouldnt have put the sherifs pin their. She knew the hologram prevented it to see. But one think that makes me think that there were no bodys is that as soon as she left the radius of the hologram she could have looked back and she should have been able to see the bodies without the hologram interfering
one thing that wasn't ever talked about was the quick "glitch" that happened in the window when they had to shut down the generator to fix it. for a brief second the 'happy, green, healthy' vista showed and at least one person in the cafeteria saw it. you can see a split second question on her face but it's never brought up again by her. weird. i was waiting for her to ask someone else, 'hey, did you just see what i just saw?' anyone else notice that?
The glitch also doesn't make any sense since the window as we now know actually does show reality. So why should there be a program running to simulate the green one? (Which also is only intended for the helm-display.)
The green world being shown as a glitch suggests that originally the silos played that instead for a calming feeling. But in this silo (#18) the green world on the screen and the relics caused rebellions, so they decided to override it and just show how the world actually looks. That glitch happening makes it go back to normal for a split second
@@raiseerbecause showing the green world is what was originally the intent. After so many rebellions this silo decided they should override that and show the opposite. I imagine other silos running normally are showing the green world video like normal
They stuck to the book. Hats off to Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, the Musical score and the cinematography. These 4 elements brought the show ALIVE.
@@sankalp6872 It was a brilliant ploy, as well. Rashida Jones is a lovely likeable actress. She has cachet and is well recognized. Her death was felt. If you found some rando actress from the Lakelands, no matter how good she was, she wouldn't hook the viewer.
When I see them, I will tell Tim Robbins and Common that you didn't like their performances. They may not be able to come out of their rooms for some time and may need to have a guard posted for suicide watch. The set decorator will probably recover from your disapproval after a beer or three and a good night's sleep Chinaze Uche might need someone to stay on the phone with him for a few hours to talk him off the ledge because of your disatisfaction I'll send a card of apology/condolences to Harriet Walters and Ferdinand Kingley and hope that's enough Might need to medicate David Oyelowo and Iain Glenn It's beyond my bandwidth to help Will Patton, Avi Nash, Rick Gomez, Remmie Milner, and Billy Postlethwaite. So unless someone else can pick up the slack, I'll have to settle for doing something wishfully superstitious effectively/recklessly lazy/irresponsible such as "thoughts and prayers"🤣
My detailed thoughts on the Finale - From a Political/Psychological standpoint. My take: The whole reason for the "illusion - lush green" is to inspire hope to the "cleaner" so that they clean the sensor to show everyone that it is safe to go outside. The sensor does not pick up sound from the outside because that was the intention of the Founders. The "cleaner" is not provided with a pen and paper to note their thoughts and the masque is foggy by design so as to not read lips. Therefore "the cleaner" has only one option, to clean the sensor so as to show it in the best available way the outside. By doing this, it refreshed the clarity of the image of the sensor so as to evidentiate to the people of the silo that the outside is still dead. Every "cleaner'' cycle is basically a psychological routine process to discharge the hope (of the people) that was accumulated in the silo ( reset ) of the wonder of the outside, that maybe it is safer to go out. In doing this you crush the hope build-up, and keep the Silo safe of inside civil war ( the only way for the system to stay alive is to quell any systematic hope of the natural way a human is built - to hope for a better future ) - The Founders probably knew that whatever happened to the outside, would take hundreds maybe thousands of years until it becomes habitable again, but humanity's patience is a lot shorter, and they had to find ways to keep it in check to evade disaster. Furthermore, the "cleaner" had to die before crossing the hill, because if it gets out of view, people might believe that they made it, and will always wonder if he is still alive ( Hope building up ). What is my take on the immediate happenings after this season finale: Julliete realizes that she is short on air supply, and her only option is the following : To enter a different Silo. She will show up in view of a different Silo sensor, and the people in the Cafeteria (of that Silo ) will go nuts about it. And demand their mayor to let her in, because understandably that means that there are people outside de Silo - ALIVE! That mayor (assuming that he knows the truth ) is in a lose/lose scenario. If the mayor does not let her in, the seeds of discontent will prompt a revolution. If the mayor lets her in, Julliete will become a messiah.
Interesting interpretation, but why was it made so complicated? It was enough to have a holiday once a year, during which the animal was released on a string to see if it was safe outside.
The author of the books, Hugh Howey, has a cameo in this season finale episode. You see him in the near background in the cafeteria when the present silozens are reacting to Jules on the screen as she is getting back up from Holston's body and continues to walk out of sight.
When "The Expanse" was being aired, i don't remember there being so many people spoiling plot in TH-cam video comments. I remember it as people having the decency to avoid spoiling unless marked clearly, Most TH-camrs must've asked commenters not to put spoilers in those comments.
@@TheDollyce this is the place to postulate possibility without knowing the one possibility that the author chose. It's not an all or none in the sense of no answers or just the one. Because of the season finale I’d give it a 7.8/10….first two episodes were on a different level. Wasn’t blown away by anyone’s acting after that, also the main character was just “ok” not bad but nothing amazing performance wise.
If im not mistaken, in one of the first episodes we see someone walking and seeing the # 18 on the walls, which made them make a weird facial expression.
Why would they need to spray her with decontaminate first, and then fire the chamber afterwards? Seems to me that spray was poison to get through the weak tape and kill whoever goes out. Just my opinion I could be wrong.
I also thought about this but what i dont understand is that their are way better ways of doing it. For example why give them a whole suit when they are going to die anyways ? Just let them out without the suit and spray them with the poisen. That way death is 100% certain.
The outside world is actually toxic. They want to make you think you are seeing green so you clean. Limited air so you die by tree or if you take helmet off. All to keep silo stable so it doesn’t get terminated by silo 1 (the founders). They have to maintain the silos so humanity survives. I’m 500 years they can go out because nuclear fallout is over. They nuked the world because they were afraid of robots taking over. Huge humanity reset pretty much. Crazy
There is no poison. It's the air outside that kills, so all they needed was bad tape. Since really nobody knew about the bad tape, there is no risk of people starting to talk. If you start setting up a system for poisoning, you have to let people into the loop which is highly risky. I see what you are saying about the spray though. It would make more sense to either just fire the chamber and/or spraying afterwards so nothing gets in.
12:58 What compels them to clean is entirely rational and what the founders intended (and actually relied on); they clean because they want to show everyone in the silo it’s safe to come outside (that’s what they are seeing in their headset). But to the people inside, it looks like one last altruistic act before perishing, thus reinforcing the pact’s ideal of maintaining the silo, the community, safe above all else; of ensuring the survival of the silo above everything else.
What's not rational is why must you die doing cleaning. Why not clean then come back inside. Seems silly to die doing just one cleaning don't you think? Lazy writing.
@@jonfreeman9682 it’s in part the difficulties of adapting the book (potentially mild spoilery clues ahead). In the book, something happened in the silo’s history that led to the introduction of the pact and its associated rituals; those who threaten the survival of the silo, those who question its safety, must be sent to clean without recourse; they threaten the social order that ensures their survival (in the eyes of those who wrote the pact). Also, in the book there’s a parallel story that shows how dangerous is out there, which underlines the writers of the pact’s urgency in having no one questioning how safe is inside and how dangerous is outside.
I think the air outside is fine. The tape, like you said is faulty which lets that toxic air in. That room before they open the big door shouldn't be to depressurize and why would a person need to be decontaminated on the way out? I believe the room that is filled with some kind of toxic gas is killing the people.
Yes I agree. Because if the outside is contaminated, that'll just mean that juliette won't be a main character in s2, cause they won't be able to explain her staying alive.
It could be setup to decontaminate on the opening of either door. In other words, there could be reasons people would, at some point, come in those doors instead of leave. Of course, I haven't read the books so I'm only guessing.
Assuming they are using cleaners to check the outside condition on when to come out of silos, I don't think they are poisoning them in the chamber but maybe spray chemicals to react with tapes so that they erode and by the time they clean the camera and goes to the slope they die due to the outside air Lekin into the suit, but her strong heat tape didn't erode or sth so she survived? That's my take
@@tonylettkeman3685 I don't think it would work that way. If you came in from outside, and it decontaminated the room, then the room is clean. There would be no reason to decontaminate the room again if it opened from the inside on the way out. I also haven't read the books so we're all guessing
When I saw all the silos at the end of the episode all I could think is “man those iron mines at the bottom of the silo must be a logistical nightmare trying to navigate around other silos
Yeah. Logistically, it doesn't make much sense unless they're digging straight down....and we can see that they ain't because of the drill and all that water.
@@nathantyoe3958 Yep. I really don't think they thought this through....UNLESS, this is one of the Silos on the outer edge of the grouping and they are mining outward. I'll have to look at that last shot again. EDIT: Nope, there's craters all around 18
Since we know Jane Carmody was sent out to clean, there should have been at least one more body lying on the ground within viewing range of the camera. Even if it was decades ago, the suit should still be on the ground. I would assume that if there are survivors in the other silos, there would have been more people sent to clean, or asking to go out. The pull back scene was great, but would have been more impactful with a few bodies strewn around the other silos.
@@Hogtown1986 I did. Aside from Holstein and his wife, I only see large rocks. Bernard stated that no one makes it past the tree, so you would expect more bodies in that radius.
@@kevinhenderson5928 Yeah I watched again and it’s hard to tell. If there are no other bodies, it’s just poor art direction to the special effects team. The book describes multiple bodies in various states of decomposition. Outside is also much harsher in the book, with constant wind and dust storms that would abrade off skin.
@@Hogtown1986 That was the one detail that had me thinking that the large view screen was showing a false generated image to the residents of the silo. When Holstein took off his helmet, someone mentioned that no one had done that before, which implied they had seen many people go out.
this was an unexpected mindblowing show out of nowhere for me. i guess i have to read the books now. Btw. thx for the great explaation in a calm way without annoying effects and yelling like so many other videos.
At first I was led to believe that the real outside was different from what everyone could see from the cafeteria. When she got outside and she saw the same V formation of the birds I knew that was she was seeing through the helmet was a false projection. I was very surprised by that. Cause when the silo was shutting down for repairs, for a glimpse of a second everyone could see at the cafeteria that outside was green. That scene meant for me that due to powering down the system of false projecrion failed for a second. But that was not the case. I don't know how they will explain that in the futute. If they ever will. Perhaps when the power was cut, the outside camera could show for a second what is projected to the hemets of all those that go out to clean. I can't wait for season 2. P.S. Since there are so many silos out there I guess there must be one which is inhabited by the founders who have absolute control and can ''page'' at any time the commanders of each silo.
I think there is some king of holographic dome around the silo that projects a VR projection of a lush environment and when the power went down the VR projection was seen for a second in the cafeteria but when Juliette reach over the hill she stepped out of the dome and saw the real world as she was outside the dome projection.
When the power turns off the screen meant to turn into false display, because the silo with no power is doom silo thats what the founder thought,, so the founder want them to have good lasting memories or... they want all the silo inhabitants to be fooled and go outside and die without having to worry about their existence may jeopardize other silo beside them... idk the author do not write that in his book~
SPOILER!!! I think the founders are still alive in the first silo kept alive by freezing and reviving using the same nanotechnology they used to destroy civilization and kill all the cleaners.
@@AlseyMillerMeh, I'd call it an effective but hackish fake-out. The show runners fooled us with it betting that most most people are too stupid to remember. They were probably right!
Assuming it gets renewed for a second season (I Believe it has?), I think we'll see Juiliette gaining access to the nearest silo, then using that tunnel to get back into Silo 18. But what a great finale, really enjoyable. For a brief moment I actually thought the outside world was lush/green, but I'm glad it wasn't, as soon as I saw the V shaped bird formation again, it was obvious it was a VR recording. Another thing, is the 18 key is for unlocking the server room door, why was it buzzing/blinking in the previous episode? is it a pager and a key? If it is a pager, then that means they do have wireless tech, so that explains how the image is projected into the helmets and stops when they cross the hill/threshhold.
At the end, seeing that the planet was in fact a desolated wasteland and there are other Silos was the best possible ending. The question I want answered is why the Silo prohibits elevators and the creation of magnification lenses. My other observation is that Bernard was in an incredibly difficult situation. He clearly knows everything and has an enormous responsibility. A far greater responsibility than we are led to believe. He clearly places the survival of the silo paramount, more important than everything. He believes that the only way to maintain order and sustainability is to create a world that allows people to have a certain amount of freedom, feel productive, and not feel the need to question their reality. It is a heavy burden to have to make the decisions. He is a product of human nature. I just thought of something that would have made the last scene even more incredible. Imagine the camera panning and showing all the other SIlos the same way it did, except there are dead bodies outside all of them. That would have been even more intense.
@@faisalmemon285 yea but I already started the show I hate reading the books once I start a show because the books are usually better so I don’t want to obsess over the changes I’ll read the books after the show
Since Juliette will survive longer outside I assume she is going to make it to the next crater in which they’ll rush to let her in since they’ve never seen anyone ever show up on their camera. Season 2 will take place in another silo and at some point she’ll end up back at the first silo by traveling through the mystery door that leads to mystery tunnels between silos at the bottom of each silo. Wait until she comes face to face with everyone she knows in the season 2 finale.
I don't think she'll return so soon. She is more likely to wreak havoc and confusion than be welcomed into another silo. She'd inspire inquisitiveness and critical thinking. She'd spark rebellion. My understanding is that the final book in the trilogy is titled Silo. The second book is titled Wool. That suggests she'll be outside for a while.
She probably thought that with the tape she would have more time outside, but it turns out that she will have unlimited time because she only had to go through the sprayers that failed to get the poison into the suit. After hours, days of wandering outside and still alive, she'll get suspicious and take the helmet off, then the atmosphere will turn out to be ok.. that's how I see it
I'm 50 this year and with thousands of movies on my back experience, but this finale blew me away in the same level like no other film/show has done since the original infamous 'Planet of the Apes' (1968) ending. Brilliant show!
I believe the founders knew that people will eventually get anxiety in the silo (the syndrome) which makes them want to go outside which is why they set up the cleaning process and the rule that says you can say you say you want to go out but can’t come back in. It makes them think outside is fine so they clean the camera then but eventually will die from the bad tape which deters others from wanting to go outside
I have not read the books, but after watching the season finale I can only speculate that the big door at the bottom of the silo does not connect to the outside world, but to a network of tunnels that connect the silos, that, for whatever reason has been sealed and flooded in this particular silo
I think the mines are another ruse. You don't come back from them because they don't exist. It is another way of dealing with those who start to know the truth. This would be similar to the Russian gulags. It's a death sentence.
The interesting thing is that it doesn't matter whether it's green outside or a cold and dark apocalyptic world. And this dark image has caused people to deny themselves from going out and knowing the truth. As Bernard tries to maintain order inside the silo because he is afraid that the truth outside will destroy the silo. And this story is very similar to the words of politicians who say don't take religious belief from people because facing the reality can destroy them. But Juliette says I am not afraid and humans have the capacity to understand the truth
Absolutely and this ain't nudin new. History is replete with examples of burning books, banning religion arts history music like in Germany WWII Russia China who went thru the great cultural revolution under the misguided notion that these ahem artifacts of knowledge inspire creativity and ultimately rebellion against gov't. So the author is borrowing from history to craft his bunker story and fast forward 260 years and the radiation from WWIII has died down but the land just above the silo is barren but there are lush fields and green further out by the river if they are bold enough to venture out. But they've been trapped down for so long they're afraid to go out. The bunkers each can only hold so many people so they need multiple bunkers. So far this story plods predictably and done before by movies like Matrix, Equilibrium, Brazil, 1984 etc but this is a nice bunker theme. Hopefully it gets better next season and more meat less fillers.
The “steam” must be a gassing that has an accurate and expected time to take effect. Jules suit is taped tightly because “supply” delivered “Down Deep” tape to seal her suit. That means her air tank is not poisoned. The expectation is that the gas applied in the exit chamber will kill within a few seconds and the taping using defective tape allows the expected poisoning. The pleasant holographic scene that those that “go out to clean” see must be a last gift of mercy by the founders.
No the pleasant holographic scene is psychological. It’s designed to make them clean because they got overwhelmed and want people in the silo to “see the truth”.
I haven't read the books but as a TV viewer I'm just enthralled by the story, characters, actors. A great season 1 and I can't wait for Season 2. AppleTV has been killing it lately with their choice of adaptations and shows, their batting average is high. You are also doing great work Pete, thanks for covering the content we all love. One of the many content creators I look forward to watching throughout the week/month.
One detail: when they shut down the generator, the display at the cafeteria briefly showed the same image of the "paradise world", as in the helmet. so perhaps the fake image is somehow broadcast out the silo doors, not just in the helmets.
Another channel pointed out that the computer showed a big ass dome over the top of the Silo so that tracks. But why? If they can make a giant holograph, they could have put windshield wipers on the “sensor” or simply made them retractable to clean from the inside.
@@RonAbernathy27They did that on purpose in my opinion. They knew the people who went outside would probably clean the lense thinking that that way the people inside the silo can see what they are seeing. If you remeber the meyer told us that most people who got sentenced to go outside never wanted to clean the lense but as soon as they were outside they cleaned it. You have to remember that these people dont know that the technology for holograms exist. So as soon as they go outside and see the grass and birds they think that the lense must have to dirty and thats why it looked grey all the time because like i said these people dont know that holograms exist. And also these people have no way of coming back inside and explaining everyone that the outside world looks good. The only interactions they can make is with the camera.
@@AliElBaba well, a hologram projector would necessarily be dirty too, so it is hard to believe this whole hologram/dome theory. (Nevermind the fact that all the tech we have seen so far, even the secret stuff, is not very advanced. The keychain is probably the first indicator of wireless tech? The one room had flatscreens vs old crt type displays in the rest of the silo, still not very advanced. The hidden cameras, not terribly impressive either..).
I figured that tunnel at the bottom of the silo probably linked to the other silo's early in the season. I bet loads of people ask to go outside now but die cos they don't have the right tape.
My mind is blown!! To be honest I watched this with my mom and we were talking and giddy and freaking out the whole time and missed 75%+ or more of this, we fully did not comprehend any of this, I did not even see the heat tape issue or the other silos lmao thank you for "showing me the light" LOL
Great stuff! Are you considering doing a video where you discuss the book and what's changed or not from the TV show? I just finished the book series before this episode so I'm interested in your thoughts about the books as well.
When I watched it I didn't think that the air outside was toxic, but rather the gust of smoke or vapor that ejects right before a person goes out to clean. Because the tape does not work, it goes into the suit and slowly kills whoever inhaled it. Even if you take off your helmet afterwards, you have already breathed it in.
How good was Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols? Answer: Brilliant. She was literally on screen 90% of the time from E2-E10. Emmy worthy, in my opinion!
didn't read the book didn't knew about it, started to watch by mistake episode 1 and finaly i waytched the all season, it is one iof the best tv show of 2023 so far
I suspect the door at the bottom is a way to go between silos, and maybe even lead to an underground society of sorts. Of course, that's only speculation.
I originally suspected that the suit was actively poisoning them but apparently that's not the case as the switched tape saved her so the outside might be poisonous. Don't know where this leaves us for next season. If it was a wasteland but NOT poisonous there'd be a little hope for her but unless the switched tape is irrelevant I don't see how the star of the show gets out of this one! Goes INTO another silo maybe??? The leaky tape being the reason why all others succumbed "right on schedule" is a bit of a flimsy plot device. 1) "they" have full control over the entire suit so they could make the backpack feed in poison at a very specific time/distance or just put vents somewhere. It's not like the wearer can do an integrity check before leaving!. 2) Different bodies (mass, fitness) would react at different rates so there would be no fine control from the trace amounts getting through leaky tape I thought that the mayor rushed off to turn off her "green" image as it seemed to vanish the moment he entered the room but I couldn't see what did that achieve for the people remaining? Who cares what SHE sees?,... the viewscreens still show a wasteland, just one in which the cleaner didn't drop dead. Thought it better for him to turn off the internal viewers instead. I guess if he didn't turn her screen off, the remaining question is what exactly did/could he do once he knew that SHE knew her helmet image was false? And why would that get him in such a tizzy? The leaky tape is still supposed to take care of her and she was still apparently beginning to falter when he ran off to the server room. Ugh, so many questions, and at the current glacial rate of modern TV production (6-10 eps per 18-24 months!), sooooo long to wait! (so annoying,.. in the 80's/90's/00's series like TNG/DS9/Voyager/SG1/SGA/B5 knocked out 20+ episodes a year, most very good episodes. Something has gone very wrong with the industry.) Oh, obviously a non book reader here so maybe this is all clear to those in the know!
You could estimate how long it would take. I think the decontamination room is where they poison the cleaners. That smoke that gets pumped in I don’t think is oxygen. They could total tweak the concentration level’s through those vents and tailor it towards the size of each person. They don’t all collapse in the exact same spot either which kind of proves they are estimating
I think the steam that was released before she stepped outside is poisonous. I think its cyanide.... Since cyanide is made from apple seeds and they grow lots of apples which I found just bizarre... I think the air is polluted but still breathable... Thats my take
Once it was clear she was going over the hill, Bernard had to run to check in with his bosses. What if she survives long enough to make it to another silo?? He didn’t turn her screen off - it was designed to show augmented reality only in the bowl where the cleaners stayed. Once she cleared the hill the system was unable to continue to create a false reality.
I thought the leaky tape vs. good tape was weak. I don't think Bernard turned off the hologram, she just reached the limit of the field and stepped out of it, therefore seeing the real world.
@@Hogtown1986 I think Bernard realizes Juliette knows she is seeing a hologram and not the reality, but he does not know how or why, so he runs to the room to see if the computer that sends the hologram is working or not. He sees the lush display on the monitor and is confused.
as always, thank you for an excellent synopsis and i love the Plato reference. One could almost (briefly) feel sympathetic to the Mayor, except that he's left a trail of dead bodies and there's no getting around that...., that and the oppression.... really enjoyed this series!
what i dont understand is, how are all the silos so close to each other? it doesnt seem to be enough space on the surface between them to fit the size of what their width seems to be underground 🤔. it all seems more like theyre stuck in some kind of simulation
Yeah, it's in my opinion another shortcoming of this screen adaptation (I guess so the multitudes of silos are clearly all visible in a single wide shot) where you have to again suspend your disbeliefs as much as in the third episode where they quite unscientifically fix the silo's "generator" (actually a turbine which wouldn't work if opened like that) that has been miraculously running without repairs for hundreds of years. And this contraption is powered by hot continuous mystery steam from somewhere below that can make metal lids glow, and the dousing of which with cooling water does not instantly boil the people present in the antechamber.
@@dorianstephens9246 wow. 😆 that makes no sense. if they all widen up underground that would make them overlap. it just logic. i will let you think about what you suggested on your own. maybe you can hear yourself 😆
I think it was just a way of showing the viewer that there are many more silos. I think a satellite type image or a birds-eye view could have worked too. Could have spaced the silos out a bit further.
Well my main thought is that why was she decontaminated before leaving let alone burning the room afterwards makes no sense unless it dose the decontamination process is actually the problem due to the fact the it heat tape is faulty to begin with since might be a fast acting virus? Or poison though I don’t think that’s the case due to the fact that would have gone away if he took his helmet off
This show is great! Even my mom - who’s only into fun romances and comedies - was hooked! The acting was great too. Really liked Mayor Jahns’ character, sad that she was killed early on.
I appreciate that Bernard-of-the-show has had his evil edges blunted a bit. He's done terrible things, but the show really did a good job of hinting that he's under a certain strain too, and at least to his mind, he's doing his level best to keep everyone alive. The last moments we see Bernard really give one pause to think he's not necessarily wrong in his thinking. Book-Bernard was a little more power for power sake and 1 dimensional evil, IMO. Anyway, of course that's the perfect place to end the season, and I will be so excited to see how they start next season, what with two or three good options to choose from. :D
But what is the point of the whole system? I mean whatever happened before ppl still prefer to stay alive, and it looks like the basic equation is true: they r closed off from a toxic world with scarce resources so they have to operate in a very strict way. It isn't like in Snowpiercer, there is no obvious exploitation. Does the book explain this?
What I want to know is what the number 140 has to do with stuff sense the rebellion was 140 years ago and there’s 140 floors so maybe there’s 140 silos
great first season...it is begining to become one of my favourite shows. I'm curious as to how they'll start the next season as i haven't read the books, which i think i will.
I just finished this last week and I found out that the first season covers maybe 3/4 of the first book according to Wikipedia. I'm definitely going to to get these and start reading them. This show is great.
Really great show! My theory going on that the world is liveable and they are being lied to was that the suit was slowly poisoning them. And when the previous sherif took off they helmet he had the right idea but was too late. My theory was to go out there with no protection and you would be fine. Boy was I wrong lol. But it begs the question why all the fuss of showing them a fake world when they get out?
I know it's probably not a big deal, but the distance of those silos on the outside scene annoys me. With the infrastructure inside the silo, the other silos should be quite far because they need to sustain their own silo.
I wasn’t able to see the bodies when they panned out and showed the other silos. I know they were there because Juliette put the badge on the body, but it bothered me that I couldn’t see them when they showed everything around.
Thank you for a great recap and some stuff I missed. I have not read the books, so I can't complain about whatever changes were made. I really enjoyed the slow burn, episode by episode revealing tantalising clues about how the silo is supposed to work. It is yet another future that also depicts, in a way, our real world.
Kind of got the idea the stuff they spray on the cleaners before leaving is the poison, rather than outside being toxic? Havent read the books though! Definitely want to now. Amazing writing!
Actually the spray is anti radiation decontamination chemical to reduce the toxins. Generally they don't survive long outside but Jules made it farther because her suit was sealed tight with good tape.
What happened to Jule's temporary assistant? I thought for sure she would pop up again. Also, what happened to all the people that saw the brief flash of "reality" through the screen when the power was switched from the main generator to the backup?
I hope you do a video comparing the show to the book for the first season. Like "Ready Player One," I am finding the show and the book equally enjoyable.
The display inside the helmet, and the fact that you can still see their face on the outside of the helmet reminds me a lot of the new Apple Vision Pro...which makes it funny to me that this is on Apple TV.
The thing I love about this book series is, every time you partially answer a question you get another question. There are so many peoples in this thread that are completely right and wrong at the same time on some of this stuff. And it’s gloriously mystifying.
Talking for the series and not the books, I would guess that not all the silos had failed rebellions. I bet Juliette will find one of those silos. Walking in front of their screen, seeing her, they will let her in.
Yes, she will stumble to the nearest silo, but don´t expect a welcome crowd :) Don´t want to spoil the plot. Also, I do think the second season might be dealing with the past, i.e. when, why a how the silos were built. So we will se Juliet at season three.
@@markvolt2070 Well that sounds like you have read the books which I have not. Lets hope we are both surprised. I would hope that she finds a way thru the other side of that large door of her silo.
my only question is why wouldn't they study all of the other files on the drive, there is *plenty* of crucial info. Yet they seem to get so occupied with that cleaning video they don't even check the rest
There is no poison. Outside just really isn’t ok to breathe the air and the screens are fake so people don’t realize that there are other silos. Bernard is telling the truth when he says everyone will die if they go outside
@@eds1942 just to make it seem like it’s disinfecting but it’s not doing anything. There’s no gas in the suit. The outside is a legit toxic wasteland. This is why they had the heat tape “engineered to fail” and why Bernard said it should be “right about now” when she should die. The tape usually fails and the air gets in and ppl die. But they fixed the tape on her suit
From the looks of outside it looks to be a nuclear war. That’s the only way end up with that kind of barren environment. Which would make sense to build the silos as an underground self sustaining bunker until it’s safe to come out. What they see on the screen is real so they would be breathing in radioactive air if they go outside. My guess is the helmet display is wirelessly controlled by each silos server room and the hill is the limit for wireless from each silo to work. Once she crosses the hill the wireless connection disconnected and she saw the truth. The heat tape kept her safe from the radiated air and there is actually real oxygen in the tanks.
As a non Booker reader I imagine all the silos are connected by their servers. As soon as a “master” OG hard drive was plugged in it alerted the other silos oh #18 is in fact still active/alive. Perhaps Bernard and previous leaders became xenophobic/isolationist after their rebellion that lead to the pact and authoritarian regime. The keychain started blinking bc they got pinged by the other silos with messages. He ran to the room to see the messages-perhaps there are multiple #18 style silos and he’s going to warn them about Jules potentially appearing on their displays.
Why was the previous mayor murdered, along with the previous deputy Marnes? What threats did they pose to social order? If social order was so important, then why was Juliette from Mechanical allowed to become Sheriff? They should've just made Marnes or Billings the new Sheriff. (But of course then we wouldn't have a story.)
Mayor jahns was killed because she’s a leader but didnt bow down to judicial authority (doesnt make billings the new sheriff) and marnes was killed because he tried to investigate mayor jahns murder. Its all about control with judicial that’s why they killed the previous mayor, marnes and tried to sabotage juliette as the new sherrif i think
@@thomy.k8861 - other fan-sites say Mayor+Marnes were murdered because Bernard was furious that she approved the power blackout. When blackout happened, the cameras all went offline, I guess. That meant IT/Judicial couldn't spy on everyone during that time.
They were trying to kill Marnes and things went wrong. Hugh Howey got asked a question about this in the AMA he just did www.reddit.com/r/SiloSeries/comments/14otzcj/comment/jqeosp7/?context=3
IMO this is the best show of the season. I can't wait for season 2. I'm really glad I waited till the season was almost over to start watching so I could binge it. I didn't know this show was based on a book until it was mentioned in this video. I'm wondering if the doors at the bottom of the silo lead to other silos.
Firstly thank you for covering this I enjoyed your coverage of the expanse.. what did you make of Bernards facial expression when julliet mention the big metal door? I'm not to sure if he was surprised to know that she knew or he was surprised that there is a big metal door? 🤔
do we know that it is the air outside that is toxic enough to kill or is the spray that the cleaners are subjected to right before they climb out? questions....
The mayor's chain represents the interconnected silos. I guess his key to silo 18 opens the tunnel door to the other silos. The shape of the key closely resembled the parts of the chain around his neck.
@@kishawilson2747 why would there be? So someone in silo 150 would have 150 chain links? Would get awfully big compared to that one then, if his only had 18 lol
Clearly none of this deception runs on Windows. Can you imagine the gig would be up pretty fast as it installs 'Edge browser' on the canteen window... (Yes, that remarkably small canteen for 10,000 people)
Looks like there at least 50 or more silos, that about what I could count, not sure why they would want to keep them all separate , but that will have to be discovered in the next season, and maybe that door in the deep is a door that links other silos or where the mayor can travel to other silos to meet up with other heads of IT.
In case you have a pandemic , mechanical failure, explosion, etc . Assuming this was done to save humans , you wouldn’t want to put all your eggs in one basket . It also explains why we’re seeing diversity in the people cuz inbreeding can cause serious health issues . The more diverse they are , the healthier their genetics .
Just watched episode 10 and have to say (among many other discrepancies Ive seen) that the silo must have been built by the same timelords who built the Tardis cause that silo sure looked a lot smaller on the outside than on the inside, amongst the other silos . LOL
seriously, maybe is because im a construction guy,but when I saw the hill, my first thought was: This sht is to small for how big it looks on the inside😅
Another aspect to the camera and display that I can't figure out has to do with what happened when the power went out. The display glitched to the green view of the outside and more importantly the camera and display are still powered. My guess is that means the electricity and need for the cleaners to see the green view are design features of the Founders and probably someone still left running the world still out there.
@PetePeppers1 - can you do a spoiler filled episode that elaborates on the books, like what is the server room about, and how/where the show deviates from them regarding plot points? 🙏🏼
I have been reading the Silo series book 1 (Wool) and although I love the quote they use before cleaning about not knowing who built the silo, I have yet to see something like it in the book. I am almost done with the first one so maybe I missed it or it is just something for the show. Anyone else who have read the books, is there a line similar to this in the books? Either way I love both. :)
@@Shahyan008 they want them to survive for a short time, hence the bad tape.
@Shahyan008 Silo's authorities want them to survive long enough to clean the camera, because dust accumulates on the camera over time.
Like why erase history?
and the tunnel at end of each silo create a network to other silos connect together 😉
It was ruined for me by the countless trolls telling'everyone in the video comments especially in the think story channel
I'm guessing the doors in water connect to the other silos?
The end was so satisfying. I was screaming for her to take the suit off the entire time until i realized the tape was gonna keep her alive. I expected maybe a few silos but their is tens or even hundreds! wow. What a nice finale.
Well the 18 on the key chain indicates that they're silo 18. I was with you wanting her to take off her helmet but I didn't like that it was just bad tape being the sole reason why people die while cleaning.
@@mightheal why don't you like that?
It started strong and ended strong, it's been awhile enjoying a series so intense since Westworld S1
I was like I knew the poison was going to kill her in a few minutes but the tape was actually saving her, wonder if she will talk to the other silos?
When he realized she knew the screen in her helmet was false, he only started running to that room after she kept walking on. He didn’t think she would keep walking on not knowing that the tape was switched. Once he realized she had the capacity to keep walking he ran to that room which is probably an area where the ones in the know can communicate with other silos, hence the device/key with the number. If she kept walking and appeared in another silos camera viewpoint, it can cause a domino effect of repercussions in other silos as well. He probably needed to tell those in other silos what is happening for them to shut their cameras off and keep the lie alive.
Good speculation!
¸Nice connection. One thing I dont see exaplined is where is sheriff Holsten body in last scenes when she sees real world.
His body is exactly where they can see it from the cafeteria. She put his badge on the body to show that. Even though it looks like a rock through the visor she could tell that he was there when she reached out her hand.

one thing that wasn't ever talked about was the quick "glitch" that happened in the window when they had to shut down the generator to fix it. for a brief second the 'happy, green, healthy' vista showed and at least one person in the cafeteria saw it. you can see a split second question on her face but it's never brought up again by her. weird. i was waiting for her to ask someone else, 'hey, did you just see what i just saw?'
anyone else notice that?
Yeah I’m sure everyone noticed it shame that it wasn’t picked up on
The glitch also doesn't make any sense since the window as we now know actually does show reality. So why should there be a program running to simulate the green one? (Which also is only intended for the helm-display.)
Maybe the dome which projects this green earth is also powered by the generator and it was the last thing to shut off. Duno.

Great take!
The mayer does not know the truth if not even Simmons does
Interesting interpretation, but why was it made so complicated? It was enough to have a holiday once a year, during which the animal was released on a string to see if it was safe outside.

Its really tough to wait like this masterpiece great story and superb directions with brilliant artists
The key is for silo 18! That's why the hard drive had 18 on it, it was one of the hard drives in silo 18. Their silo is 18
If im not mistaken, in one of the first episodes we see someone walking and seeing the # 18 on the walls, which made them make a weird facial expression.
That's exactly right
12:58 What compels them to clean is entirely rational and what the founders intended (and actually relied on); they clean because they want to show everyone in the silo it’s safe to come outside (that’s what they are seeing in their headset).
Also, in the book there’s a parallel story that shows how dangerous is out there, which underlines the writers of the pact’s urgency in having no one questioning how safe is inside and how dangerous is outside.
they've seen people clean before and it didn't show the green world, so why would it this time ?
@@___Somebody___I had this same question that seems so lazy to me
I think the air outside is fine.
@@chisomo8088 she will probably enter the silo through the door she found
It could be setup to decontaminate on the opening of either door.

Thanks for watching
seriously can’t wait for S2!
Yes foundation 2 is so exciting
Since we know Jane Carmody was sent out to clean, there should have been at least one more body lying on the ground within viewing range of the camera. Even if it was decades ago, the suit should still be on the ground. I would assume that if there are survivors in the other silos, there would have been more people sent to clean, or asking to go out. The pull back scene was great, but would have been more impactful with a few bodies strewn around the other silos.
I had same thought
Watch it again. There are bodies scattered around Juliette’s silo.
Thats not in the books, it was a fuckup by the show writers.
Yah s2 is in 2024
It was buzzing because they accessed a drive on the server. It seems to buzz when accessed.
It's the bat phone. Commissioner Gordon is calling.
I do think the 18 key is like a pager and the server room is where the real heads of Judicial can communicate with each silo.
I had a conversation with Hugh Howey yesterday and he said he's been watching the dailies because they're shooting season 2 right now.
In the 2nd seasons trailer (episodes start nov 15 btw, it shows TONS of dead bodies outside another silo that juliette walks over)
I love that every answer to a mystery leads to more questions and more mystery I’m so mad I have to wait at least a year for season 2
You can read the book, or spoilers on the internet. I already read the spoilers.
Maybe one of the signs that it's safe to come outside is someone showing up on their camera.😮
She probably thought that with the tape she would have more time outside, but it turns out that she will have unlimited time because she only had to go through the sprayers that failed to get the poison into the suit. After hours, days of wandering outside and still alive, she'll get suspicious and take the helmet off, then the atmosphere will turn out to be ok.. that's how I see it
Great theory! I also suspected the sprayers
That is what I believe
LoL, it's that or they wasted alot time talking about the tape and showing us the tape.
Entirely possible. What would be worse is knowing half the other silos have already left and have been living outside for years.
Yes why spray her on the way out it makes no sense if they want to spray The room do it after she has left right ?
I'm 50 this year and with thousands of movies on my back experience, but this finale blew me away in the same level like no other film/show has done since the original infamous 'Planet of the Apes' (1968) ending. Brilliant show!
Thanks! Another excellent video.
Thanks so much
I believe the founders knew that people will eventually get anxiety in the silo (the syndrome) which makes them want to go outside which is why they set up the cleaning process and the rule that says you can say you say you want to go out but can’t come back in.
Given that the other silos are that close, where are the mines located? Can't really dig sideways or down, skipping the huge drill, right?
You say history is replete with all that you mentioned, but history repeats and it’s happening in the U.S. right now as we speak.

Both can be true.

The broadcast is around the crater.. if you past that u can see the original place
Loved this recap all season!
My mind is blown!! To be honest I watched this with my mom and we were talking and giddy and freaking out the whole time and missed 75%+ or more of this, we fully did not comprehend any of this, I did not even see the heat tape issue or the other silos lmao thank you for "showing me the light" LOL
Thank you Pete for covering another great series and for your excellent recaps. Your channel is always my go-to post episodes 👌🏼
Thanks!
Awesome review. I watched the episode, but I still didn’t understand some things. So thank you for clearing everything up.
Great stuff! Are you considering doing a video where you discuss the book and what's changed or not from the TV show? I just finished the book series before this episode so I'm interested in your thoughts about the books as well.
Yeah, I have been thinking about it. I have to put together the season 2 questions video and edit the interview before I'll get around to it though.
@@PetePeppers1 That'd be great!
That's more than "several" other silos!! Can't wait for season 2, thanks for the awesome, non-spoilery-from-the-books recap!
didn't read the book didn't knew about it, started to watch by mistake episode 1 and finaly i waytched the all season, it is one iof the best tv show of 2023 so far
I suspect the door at the bottom is a way to go between silos, and maybe even lead to an underground society of sorts. Of course, that's only speculation.
The Silo are connected and it's an underground passage to not just other silo but the rebellion from the past a treasure of artifacts of pre silo.
2) Different bodies (mass, fitness) would react at different rates so there would be no fine control from the trace amounts getting through leaky tape
I thought that the mayor rushed off to turn off her "green" image as it seemed to vanish the moment he entered the room but I couldn't see what did that achieve for the people remaining?
Something has gone very wrong with the industry.)
Oh, obviously a non book reader here so maybe this is all clear to those in the know!
I have NOT read the book ....but I am betting there is a REASON they are so close together.....
It could be that it widens out under the surface
It seems the information about massive door made of steel leads Bernard to try repair broken hard drive. So I think he didn't know about them.
Agreed. I didn’t get it at first but I think they actually did a great job of adapting that character so far.
Thanks so much for resisting the urge to put hints in our head for next season! 🙏😄
great first season...it is begining to become one of my favourite shows. I'm curious as to how they'll start the next season as i haven't read the books, which i think i will.
Next season will be the prequel. Then the next will be the finale.
You should,interesting story
I just finished this last week and I found out that the first season covers maybe 3/4 of the first book according to Wikipedia. I'm definitely going to to get these and start reading them. This show is great.
Really great show! My theory going on that the world is liveable and they are being lied to was that the suit was slowly poisoning them. And when the previous sherif took off they helmet he had the right idea but was too late. My theory was to go out there with no protection and you would be fine. Boy was I wrong lol. But it begs the question why all the fuss of showing them a fake world when they get out?
I listen to I think every podcast in the video discussion in years is by far the best. thank you
thanks
I know it's probably not a big deal, but the distance of those silos on the outside scene annoys me. With the infrastructure inside the silo, the other silos should be quite far because they need to sustain their own silo.
I agree, if one silo can hold up to 10,000 plus people, the distance between them would be significant
The cleaning vid is a recording from before the calamity, but after the initial build date of the vault 18; i mean silo 18.
They say you get sprayed with nanobots
I have been thinking about the allegory of the cave the entire season. I’m glad you did too. ❤
What happened to Jule's temporary assistant? I thought for sure she would pop up again.
Also, what happened to all the people that saw the brief flash of "reality" through the screen when the power was switched from the main generator to the backup?
I have read comments saying that the brief flsh never happened in the books and that its only in the show to entertain us viewers more.
Excellent explanation! Thanks so much. 👍👍
Glad it was helpful
Brilliant series...brilliant analysis..... and one of my friends makes a cameo in the series:) so proud to see her in it!
I think in season 2 she ends up in that silo where almost everybody is dead, one survivor i think😅
Those ‘S’ words are kicking your butt. 😅 I recommend using a de-esser plugin for your audio. 👌🏾
my only question is why wouldn't they study all of the other files on the drive, there is *plenty* of crucial info. Yet they seem to get so occupied with that cleaning video they don't even check the rest
did apple wait to release this episode after they have released their virtual reality headset the apple vision pro?
I think the poison is in the smoke shower before they go out so she'll probably be okay if the suit fails outside.
There is no poison. Outside just really isn’t ok to breathe the air and the screens are fake so people don’t realize that there are other silos. Bernard is telling the truth when he says everyone will die if they go outside
Yeah. For what reason did they release gas into the airlock before opening the outer hatch for her?
@@Darknesssleeps That's not how radiation works.
Great video. Great break down. I was iffy on this season up until I saw the last episode and your break down. Now I'm very excited for season 2.
Great video. Haven’t read the book so appreciate this. ❤
And also marnes already said he doesnt want to be a sheriff and want to retire soon
@@thomy.k8861 - other fan-sites say Mayor+Marnes were murdered because Bernard was furious that she approved the power blackout. When blackout happened, the cameras all went offline, I guess. That meant IT/Judicial couldn't spy on everyone during that time.

IMO this is the best show of the season. I can't wait for season 2. I'm really glad I waited till the season was almost over to start watching so I could binge it. I didn't know this show was based on a book until it was mentioned in this video. I'm wondering if the doors at the bottom of the silo lead to other silos.
How about in the Server room it's an AI. The "founders" is an AI for each silo that helps maintain the order and structure.
Great review! Thanks for the breakdown. So excited for season 2.
Firstly thank you for covering this I enjoyed your coverage of the expanse.. what did you make of Bernards facial expression when julliet mention the big metal door? I'm not to sure if he was surprised to know that she knew or he was surprised that there is a big metal door? 🤔
I'm still not sure. Will discuss it in my season 2 questions video for sure. Both things you mentioned seem equally plausible.
Look forward to seeing the next video 👀
I picked up on this as well! I was like gurl no, why did you
say that?! He clearly does not know all truths either!
thats exactly what I thought 😭
do we know that it is the air outside that is toxic enough to kill or is the spray that the cleaners are subjected to right before they climb out? questions....
Good question. Why spray her if the air outside is toxic!?
The mayor's chain represents the interconnected silos. I guess his key to silo 18 opens the tunnel door to the other silos. The shape of the key closely resembled the parts of the chain around his neck.
Is there 18 circles on the chain too?
@@kishawilson2747 why would there be? So someone in silo 150 would have 150 chain links? Would get awfully big compared to that one then, if his only had 18 lol

Very cool Pete, thanks for all your good works here.
Each silo is a literal lifeboat for humanity. Only one needs to survive to ensure humanity continues once it’s safe to be outside.
Great video Pete. Thank you.
This IT guy here thought same. Also the silos are much too close together.
This confirms K9 in season 2.
i just realized that the underground door most likely leads to another silo... Wow.. Sorry if this is already mentioned below somewhere.
Thanks again for another great video. I appreciate your efforts.
No problem
