    I think for 12 down we need to take the word INDIGENCE and replace the letter D (first of deaths) with TELL (report as a verb). Great solve.

      Exactly: I saw that, too, once Simon had done all the difficult bits. 😺

    Poverty=Indigence
    Report=tell
    First of death=d
    So indigence but replace (cover) the d with tell gives intelligence

      INDIGENCE Looks like Simon has never been in poverty
      INTERNAL (where a laparascope goes) he hasn't suffered one of these procedures either!

    Have commented several times about the help contained in these videos but it bears saying again. What I find most useful, as I have now learned the basics, is the commentary and the explanation of your thought process. The particular deconstruction of the clue has helped enormously in avoiding the linear interpretation of the words and finding the crazy pathing route often needed to solve, impetigo being an excellent example here. 🙏

    My Saturday fix!
    Scored a few points today ( as in got the answer before Simon).
    In a hospital the intern is a house officer, and an "internal" is a short form for internal examination which can be done my a laparascope ( Lapar= abdomen, scope=see)

  • @emilywilliams3237

    Fantastic. I love these even though I don't really get it very much! Thanks, Simon.

  • @rodstuart2419
    @rodstuart2419 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Internal - house officer is an intern, add A and L from the start of the words applying and laparoscope. A laparoscope is an instrument for facilitating an internal examination, or in medical slang, an internal. So if a house office applied a laparoscope to do this, they would be performing an internal.

    I paused the video at 2:13 and scanned the clues looking for a way in. I drew a complete blank at most of them, finding it hard to even work out which was the definition. Trussed, scalpel, and mourned were just about the only givens (would ur = you are have been allowed by the previous editor?) I did get indifference, which led to irresistible. Once I had the D, sped became available, which let to impetigo. Once I could see the clue for 15D, that was also a given, and it started to open up. The bottom half turned out to be much easier.
    Intelligence was a nicely constructed clue - tell (report) inside indigence (poverty) after losing its D. The position of "covering" was a bit misleading though.
    I liked co-lander. I'm surprised it took you so long to get that. You did your usual trick of failing to split "strain relationship", which my senses told me was a suspicious phrase asking to be split.
    Once I got diligent I chuckled too. I had considered something like a word ending -sagy or -timy, but trussed put the kibosh on that. Dilly gent was much better.
    I don't know why it took you so long to get limb. It's within the limits of "climbs" (extends upwards). The sides of a doorway "project"? The jamb is the side pillars of a doorway, the part the hinge is fixed to, and where the striking plate for the latch are fixed. It's almost the definition of something which does NOT project.
    It was definitely tougher than most, but except right at the start I didn't have much trouble.
    I don't know if it's something you're doing (or not doing), but I've not been notified about the last two crosswords. Are you perhaps forgetting to click a check box or something?

    Ref the parsing of TRUSSED, I think it is to be read as 'with truss', a truss being a support (esp a medical one), rather than tied up - which is, of course, also a verbal meaning of truss.

    I'm puzzled by the common idea that UR meaning "you are" is from texting. It's just an ancient pun. In particular, long before anybody had a mobile phone or other texting gizmo, there were cheesy birthday cards, for 18 and 21 especially, showing number plates like UR 18 or UR 21.
