- It seems I have a bit of a dinking problem.
I guess I’m just not cut out to be a professional dinker. We can’t all live the dinking dream. It’ll no doubt leave a big hole in my life.

Perhaps in the right hands these tools are capable of producing perfect results every time, but it seems my hands aren’t the right hands and maybe my old records are just too brittle. However even if they did work perfectly - in my opinion they both take too long and risk damaging the records

Q) Why the background music
A) Unfortunately the microphone was picking up some unpleasant asthmatic wheezing whenever I wasn’t speaking - so in editing I muted the audio in these sections. Unfortunately this made the video sound odd every time the sound cut out entirely. So I added background music off an old BGM system to cover up the abrupt audio level changes. It was either this - or delete the whole video and forget about it.

That first "Dinker" looks exactly like a electrical panel hole punch. That's why the bolt is too large.
Known as a Q Max cutter - great for sheet metal, not so good for plastic.

I remember seeing some 7” singles in Australia [Which used the small hole], that had a cut out in them. So you could just press and snap out the centre.

Same here in the UK a bunch of the old 78s started to ship with dinked holes already but had an insert with them to clip in and play on a regular TT.
Me too, on a variety of 45's. I'm in Australia but I'm sure it'd be done in the US too.

Very interesting! I can answer your question about the size of the bolt in the first dinking tool. That tool is actually a very cheap version "conduit knockout punch" designed for making holes in the sheet-metal enclosures of electrical circuit breaker boxes or other electrical boxes. The bolt is strong enough to pull the knockout tool through steel, so it was engineered for that level of force. Look up greenlee knockout punch and you can see these in all sizes. The better ones have a ball bearing to assist with the ease of operation. We use the same stepped-drill bit as you have, for making the initial hole.
This was my first thought as soon as he showed the tool. Great for malleable materials like steel, not so much for brittle plastic.
Was going to say the same. The I borrowed to do 2 holes didn't have the a bearing, but a drop of oil between the Allen key head and the washer made it so much easier to turn. A tool which rotates and cuts the material is a far better idea.
That's a great sales pitch: "Don't send your records to me. I will ruin them." Just write up a business plan, and watch the cash flow in! Thanks. That was a fun video.

My Mum watched this with me. She knew going in the records would be of no loss whatsoever and it still made her squeamish. She used to run a record shop, you see. "There's just some things you don't do to vinyl." She said. And, "but we've seen him doing things that can't be unseen." I've sat her down with a nice hot cup of tea to get over it.

In Australia to "dink" is to give someone a ride on the front of your bicycle :) I don't know what we call destroying records though.

Excellent humor! If the black one had a smaller screw and handle or grip on both sides, it might actually work. For the silver one, maybe put two holes through the label and use them to peg the record down.
Chris BigBad I think it just looks like a standard off the shelf hole cutter in the correct size, being sold as designed for a record, as there original use is for sheet metal as well you need the larger bolt to take the strain.
The best part about this video is imagining the vinyl fans going apoplectic as you put it down on wood, sanded it, missed the middle etc and everything else.

When using the second type of cutter, cut half depth then turn over and cut from the other side. You will get a massively better result.
I think usually you don't even go through the whole way, just score both sides deeply and pop the center out.
I think every person should study engineering or manufacturing it really changes the way you think about things

part of the problem is the cutters only on one side, making it very hard to keep the tool vertical, it keeps wanting to cant off to one side

I thought cutting holes in records sounded like a bad idea, but it turns out to be far worse than I'd even imagined.
I read, “drink a record” and saw the sandwich and figured I was in for a food episode.

Good quality knockout tools are pricey already though

As for the reason the first dinking tool has a shaft larger than the average disc hole I've got the answer: is a repurposed sheet metal hole puncher, made to slot in your average pre-drilled holes
I work in a pressing plant, we have a small electric flywheel press for dinking 7". It's fun dinking everything in sight.

It's the butt of a rifle, which you can grip if you're using the bayonet on it to get to get better penetration into an enemy and cause more damage and making them stop trying to fight you.

I just bought a record that was dinked but it’s now fitted with a clip to make it fit a standard record player with no 45 adapter. nice video!

I cannot be the only one who has realized that he is showing us his Hewlett Packard-01 watch now in silver. A wonderful piece of engineering even more gorgeous in silver.

Self isolating and have just found this channel really enjoying it. I seem to remember on some early 45s there was a centre that was removable and was often falling out or am I imagining this. The devices you have tested appear very crude and am not surprised you found them difficult to use. The other ones on TH-cam looked brutal as well. A fly cutter on a pillar drill or the record fixed to the face plate of a lathe would work but you would have to think of some way to clamp the outer bit of the label to support the record once you had cut through.
This was insanely entertaining! But I would say that seeing how this can go wrong was quite valuable...
The first tool is a pre-existing device for making neat holes in metal, hence the too big bolt. I would use a hole saw on a drill to be honest. It would be much quicker too. 🙂👍
I was going to disagree due to the mess, but as it seems neither of those existing devices are remotely designed for the job either, a hole saw bit is certainly no worse.
Anything purpose designed I'd expect to simply punch the record without leaving any random bits of vinyl lying around.

I would be more concerned about the records cracking and splitting when using a hole saw.
Hole saws are messy and leave jagged edges.....
If he used the tool correctly he would have had far better results....

Pull the t-handle off that second one, list it into the chuck and use it as the "hole saw"
@@SegaDream131 The problem wasn't with the punch, it was with the use of the stepped drill to enlarge the hole. That goes off-centre and so does the punch.

The first Tool i know is normally used to cut a hole in a kitchen sink for the faucet.
Got a few of those in many sizes.

Here in Australia, the record-industry simply made singles with a small hole for a standard record-player, but they also had a dinking-perforation which enabled the purchaser to easily dink it themselves by pushing out the larger disc for playing in a juke-box!

One of those voices was mine... True, I was screaming at my screen a collection of words that were understandably not to be used in civilized society. In fact my cats and dogs must have left the area sadly. When I gave it the o'le 👎.. Well I felt better and started to read and 👍 the comments.. First it was a chuckle and a snicker that I wasn't alone in my vision of a serial record mutalation person.. As I kept reading laughing escalated into uncontrollable fits of uproarious gales of laughter with loss of vision and breath.. I have not honestly laughed that hard or that long in over 30 years.. It was so good I subscribed just to see another test like this and relish the reading of comments and replys.. I have no shame..obviously 😂

Every morning during school holidays and weekends bloody waking me up. And as a result i could sing along to any of their songs at a second's notice perfectly. Not a skill that has added any value to my life so far.

The bolt doesn’t fit through the spindle hole because it’s just an off the shelf chassis punch meant for punching sheet metal.

A buddy of mine tried that once, boiling down an old 78 to get the pure alcohol out. It didn't end well. He forgot you're supposed to cut it heavily and just downed the resulting 1/2 ounce of alcohol in one shot. He blacked out and woke up two days later with no memory of what happened, but his apartment was trashed and he was jammed into the 8 inch space between his bed and the wall.

I am an electrician and a similar tool we used to use was called a Qumax cuter
they used to make 20mm and 25mm holes out of trunking to connecting
trunking.

@@kenneychappuis1853 Take a decent tempered bolt and it will work. An M6, which will go through the standard bore, in 12.9 holds (and pulls) a ton.

I have over a dozen which I use for making holes in cases and cabinets of various electronic and electrical jobs..
Personally I have in the past, use a standard wood hole saw with the drill replaced by an appropriate diameter bar.
Works well.
the first device is used on electrical junction boxes for making bigger wholes for cables. the second one probably would work better with a cordless drill

I just googled it and it's 9/32" for a 12" and presumably the same for a 7" from the UK. The large 7" holes are ~37mm or 1.46" and can be up to 38.5mm or ~1.5".

The first "dinker" you used. Is a tool i use to make holes in kitchen sinks for the faucet.
I use a door knob hole cutter for my drill. Works great!

For the second tool, there are two obvious but similar tools:
1. Replace the stone brick by a soft rubber brick by Bad Dragon. Apparently no longer manufactured but that hasn't stopped you in the past.
2. Replace that unbalanced adjustable device by a symmetrical flat wood cutting drill of correct size. Cheaply available in hardware stores, may need adding something to increase the center girth.
I don't own a single physical audio format player, nor do I have any tapes or records. Still, I can't help but to love these kind of videos. 😁👍
