    Excellent packaging man. I use to ship Aircraft fiberglass pieces and I had to make boxes for them. I use to jump up and down on them before they were picked up. The guys always made the joke if they made it out of our shop they would get to the customer safe. I can relate to write your saying. Thank you for not destroying the radio. You are a good man and I appreciate your videos. I am with you 100%

    I've been selling stuff at flea markets and in my store for decades. My favorite is when people ask you if you have something, you say yes, and they ask you if you have something else. You say yes, and they keep asking you if you have something for sale, until they find the 1 thing you don't have, and then say "Ah man! If you would have had that, I would have bought it!"

    That is a nice looking radio. By itself $35 is a great value. I am sure it's the shipping getting most folks. We are living in the most unusual times. I look around and I don't see the same world anymore...and I can't say I like what I see. Wish I could dial time back another 50 years and then finish my life at my current age from there

    I’ve had a Disney crt tv for sale on Facebook market place. One woman asked me if it’s still available. I said yes it is and she said I’ll buy it. But she never showed up so I’ve blocked them from my Facebook I won’t be doing business with her again.

    Another flaky buyer story that was amazing, I was at the flea market selling video games, a guy comes up and says he's been looing for a game for 20 years! The original Pac-Man on the Atari 2600. He'd love to find that again, he's looked everywhere, blah blah blah. So I pick one up off the table, hand it to him, it's three dollars. he goes "Wow! I can't believe it! I might have to come back and pick this up!"

    it's kind of a hard thing to do something with the tubes, just putting them back in may be too much for some people to figure out... and also if you put packaging inside on the tubes, you've got about a 50% chance they're gonna turn it on like that, lol. Of course you said the same thing just after I typed this!

    For some odd reason this demonstration made me think of suitcases. Back in the 70's I was starting to travel for work and bought a set of American Tourister hard shell luggage at a local catalog discount house. Since then have been across the country and around the world multiple times. Barely a scratch on them. All the trim pieces, handles, etc. still intact like new. Never any damage to the contents, although I did use some common sense in packing - though I am certainly no Martha Stewart. Sadly, they discontinued these years and years ago so all you can get is the cheap, flimsy crap at Walmart or pay up for elegant, designer name stuff that wouldn't hold up to half an afternoon in radiotvphononut's back yard.

    It's too bad is has to come down to this. I decided some time ago, that unless it was a relatively valuable radio or tv, I'm talking several hundred dollars, it's not worth it to me to go through all the expense, time, labor and hassle of selling it online, packing properly and shipping it. I've been ghosted on Craig's list, and had non payers on ebay. If I decide to sell an ordinary radio/tv, and it doesn't sell for any reasonable price locally, I'll offer it for free at the local flea market, once, one weekend. If I can't even give it away, then I pull the tubes, scrap it out for the metals and throw them on the piles for my next trip to the yards. That way, I at least get something back out of it. It's a shame it has to be that way, but it's just the way it is.

    Depending on the size and weight of the package, crush damage testing might also be in order. Not nearly as much for a package like yours here. But if it weighs 10 lbs, maybe up to 150 lbs of crushing {THAT's ONLY A GUESS!!}.
    I had an 80 lb package crushed with over 300 lbs of force, judging by the bending of it's thick industrial frame, as well as what happened to the box and packing (it was a broadcast videotape machine); and several others like it had over 150 pounds of crush damage.
    And that would be from packages stacked on top of it. A small light box won't be on the bottom of the walls of packages they build while loading long distance transport of delivery trucks. I know people who used to work at UPS.

    • @richardcline1337
      @richardcline1337 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrobrw919, I've had terrible experiences with the USPS "insurance". I took a working multiplay CD changer out of my system and sent it to my son. It was insured for $300.00, the replacement cost. I packed it to the point it should have withstood anything the unionized USPS gorillas could do to damage it and they STILL broke it! My son filed a claim and the *bleeps* told him he had to PROVE that it was a working unit before he got it ad refused the claim. To this day I refuse to pay for something I know is just another USPS ripoff! If I want something to get there in some reasonable resemblance of what it was I'll pack it then have UPS put their packing over it, pay the extra weight charge and relax.

      A lot of times, they just want to use the shop as a free means to dump their old TV so that they won't have to pay to get rid of it. In my area, many shops started charging an up-front check-out fee (at one shop, I think he got $65 up front) and if the customer whined about having to pay money up front, they were shown the door.

    1: should have left the tuning capacitor fully meshed
    2: should have removed the tubes and packed them separately in bubble wrap, or stuffed the insides of the radio full of packing peanuts.
    All in all about 1000% better than the average EBAY packer would have done.

    Any tube radio should be checked for loose tubes after being shipped. The small miniature 7 and 9 pin tubes will not stay seated. If the person on the receiving end is not competent to do so, then someone who is needs to check. No other "practical" way around this, needs to be done. The person on the receiving end has a compromised radio which likely has partially seated tubes, or fallen out loose inside the radio.

    Speak of the devil. I just received an oscilloscope through Fedex. It was purported to be working. I really liked how ya did the shipping “test”. This is sure to turn a few heads. At least, I hope so, the heads of UPS, and Fed Ex shippers. I don’t blame ya for doing this. Even I’d get fed up at all the broken and smashed radios in shipment. Very informative video. Your friend, Jeff.

    Must be nice for some people to have so much time to hassel vendors with fruitless inquiries.
    I guess this is why some vendors create websites where the price is listed and either you buy the item or you don't.

    You dealing with Facebook marketplace and groups? It really not the best place to sell anything vintage. As much as I have a dislike for eBay fees. It is the only way to get a decent amount where it worth selling. You likely would have got $75 plus on a radio like that especially since it been recapped. Just show detail photo of work and good description, you may have to sit on it for a couple of weeks depending on item, but a right buyer usually comes around. I done over 3k transactions over the years with maybe a couple problem buyers for the most part smooth..
    Yes you have 100's of what I call tire kickers on Craigslist and Facebook market place and people that barely want to pay anything. I only use those platforms to buy, or maybe sell a larger item I rather not ship. Don't let people get to you as you always have people that BS pretty much.

      Every I ordered stuff from eBay or Etsy, the USPS arrived about a week later and it does okay without any problems. All I get is cassettes and vinyl records.
      And speaking of which, I went to a place called Red Hook Yard Sale which is formerly Red Hook Electrical Supply and I came in for the first time since the pandemic and I had a good time. It has a messy full of stuff including vinyl LP’s, VHS, DVD, stereo equipments and cassette decks, along with loads of stuff like books and dolls and everything. I saw a GAF Anscovision 8mm projector for $10 and I wouldn’t get it, because it has a power cord just cut off, and it’s parts only, but I’m not getting it. I also saw a Sony audio/video receiver for $15 from the 1990’s with surround speaker, and I’m also not getting it, because I still have enough audio gear in my room. So I skipped the items and get just vinyl records.

I subscribed to your channel 4 years ago( shango 066 also !!!) . I "CLEARLY STATED" that I was interested in a 78 R.P.M. record player that you wanted to sell( not that long ago), and the responds that I got from you was............."CRICKETS""!!!! I am not a "FLAKE BUYER"!!! when I say that I am interested in buying something "I AM NOT KIDDING", I do not care what the cost is!!!!!

      I still have an appreciation for old electronics; but, I don't have an appreciation for bull****. So, here you go.....I obviously had the radio packed well enough that it didn't get destroyed and this video provided some entertainment. Maybe next time, I'll pack a modern Crosley in an incorrect way and give it the same test.

    • @ajtstvandmusicarchivechann1585
      @ajtstvandmusicarchivechann1585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@radiotvphononut So what that it was packed well? it still doesn't change the fact that you acted like a child and almost destroyed your radio. Thank goodness the packing job took the beating (aside from the tube that is) Why would you destroy anything in this manner. Would you be trying to prove a point? It would prove that your even more childish than this video leads on. Your money and time though.:)

    • @classiccomputers6211
      @classiccomputers6211 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can have a respect for old electronics and also treat your stuff how you want. it's a Crosley AA5 set, probably made in the millions, and I'm 100% sure he wouldn't do this if it was a set worth any amount of money. I find the attitude of "treating one's own stuff any way other than meticulously handling it with white gloves and never doing anything that would potentially damage it is childish" as childish in and of itself. Perhaps you'd pay him the 35 bucks to save this radio?

    • @KameraShy
      @KameraShy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      leave the guy alone. he's a good man who lost his cool, and he blew off steam in a way that didn't hurt anyone, while demostrating that proper packing techniques are effective.
