It’s not a lie and is actually very common. In all parts of Nigeria, especially in major cities such as Lagos, so many people do not speak their native language. Regardless of the tribe one is born into, There is a lot of pressure to assimilate in to the western culture and many hold the belief that speaking their native language takes them away from that. Parents push their children to learn and speak English because they associate speaking English with living abroad and being successful

I and ALL my Nigerian friends DO NOT UNDERSTAND A WORD of any of our dialects. She's not alone. Very sad but yeah people mike us exist. When you grow up rich your parent believe not knowing your language make you look sophisticated. ONLY my Hausa friends could rap in their language. And IT IS A BIG SHAME. I once called my mum on the phone in Nigeria and told her how sad I was that she felt it was needed to deprive me of an identity as an African and a Nigerian. This once call took place after my daughter came home from school and said she had to say a few words in her mother's language for the end of year party. Every child with a non-european parent had to say something in their parent's language....I WAS ASHAMED; That was what prompted me calling my mother and disclosing to her how I felt robbed of my African identity.

@@candynike897 I don't think forced the is the right word. As a South African who speaks 5 of our 12 languages nobody "forces" us to learn our mother tongues. It's actually easier to learn your mother tongue than English...as someone who has an English Literature minor in my degree...you may think you know the language but you would be surprised that even English is complex. I grew up in a suburb but was spoken to in Sepedi...my father's language at home and attended private school where English was the medium of instruction. Truly, Some people cant speak their dialect. Main cause may be their parents are not from the same tribe or their parents only speak English to them at home. Port Harcourt being a case study, quite a number of languages are spoken there. I lived there for 9 years, i cant speak any of their language....Here in Lagos, you will understand the language, Yoruba is spoken mainly.

    I’m sorry but is true.
Many diasporians born and raised in Europe or US cannot even speak their own dialects.
They aware about culture , traditional clothing , songs , food, craftsmanship , history , but all in English.
Armenians, Algerians , Indians , Vietnameses , Ghanaians , Filipinos born and raise in US are not able to speak and pronounce a basic sentence in their own dialect.
