I met Jabbo in NewOrleans in 1978 when he was playing with Hollis Carmouche on at the Maison Bourbon on Bourbon Street. He sounds so much more powerful on this session four years later.I was taken to meet him by my good friend Andrew Hall. We had a long chat late into the night in his apartment, sheet music every where, a player piano with the mechanism removed and a refrigerator in the middle plugged into the light socket containing mostly bottles of whisky if I remember correctly. He left the screen open and roaches would come flying in. Jabbo shot them down with a can of roach killer. He said "I don' know, they don' fly aroun' like this in Milwaukee"
Merci p. la mise s/TH-cam, Michel. Un vrai "grand" bonheur, un vrai "gift", vraiment. JO LUTTRINGER (formerly on banjo-ténor, trombone and tuba 1959-1973, still on lead guitars (since 1960)
This very performance (!) of "After You've Gone" appears on a 33 rpm lp record issued as Memories ME 04 of "Jabbo Smith & The Hot Antic Jazz Band European Concerts," which includes other live performances of the Hot Antics Jazz Band with Jabbo from March 4-13, 1982. The tunes on the album, including Jabbo's own compositions, are: Little Willie Blues (JS); Michigander Blues (JS); She's Funny That Way; I've Got the Stinger (JS); When You're Smiling; Just Play the Blues for You (JS); After You've Gone (heard here); Love (JS); Sweet Georgia Brown; and Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans. I heard Jabbo live with the Hot Antics Jazz Band at Breda Oude Stijl Jazz Festival in Breda, Holland, in May 1983. It was the last time, according to Chip Deffaa, that Jabbo played trumpet for a live audience, although he continued to sing publicly until his death. I have a taped recording of that concert. Please email me at krisbix@hotmail.com if you are interested in hearing the rest of this lp album or the bootleg I have from the 1983 Breda Jazz Festival live performance. I would charge a small time and processing fee for the digital transfer and time.
The Hot Antics really swing and lay down a great beat, and Jabbo still has the fiery artistry of a star
Bravo "Hot Antic" to work with Jabbo Smith in his "late period" so intensively!
Better ..... IMPOSSIBLE!
