I think you touched on an important point. The ultimate goal here is not winning medals and showing everyone how better you are than them in sport. It is getting the young into leading healthier outdoor lifestyles, socializing, and making friends. Sports is a means to do that.
Norway is a great country, i should visit sometimes. Norwegians are different race. I study to become wilderness-nature guide. My teacher told me about his visit in Norway. They were hiking in very steep hills and were a bit struggling. Norwegian family with little kids bypassed them. It was for them just a Sunday walk. Awesome! 😃
Hello, skål, from the southeastern US (East Tennessee)! Hope you're all doing well, Bjorn, his family, and everyone who loves his content! Ecouraging kids to _try_ new sports and see what they like and don't like is _one thing._ Giving kids a trophy for _literally not trying at all, but simply showing up_ is another. You guys go about this differently than over here. You don't diminish outstanding performances, like we tend to do. It's not even the officials who do it, but the "I'm going to relive my dreams vicariously through my kids" parents out there. It's the people who don't know how to handle a kids disappointment in losing (some people shit talk their kids, and others help the kids see what can be improved on _if they want to continue in the sport)._ It's simply different over here.
All three of my children played organized sports and activities from 4yrs old through high school. I think it’s important. They got to choose but they had to participate. It taught them so much about cooperation, goals, self confidence, and so much more. Creates life long habits.
When I was a child, physical education was part of a Canadian education. My PE teacher was a Czech gymnast, a new Canadian, and I learned to love stretching and pushing physical limits. We also had an olympic medal program. Everyone earned a medal, whether it was bronze, silver or gold, in the events that we trained for. That would be long jump, relay race, sprinting, shot put, sit ups, as I recall. We all had different levels of fitness. We learned to swim and skate at the local university, played street hockey and skated, swam, etc. That all changed in the 80s. By the way, what a BEAUTIFUL day! It was the same here; cold and clear. Take care. x
In the USA when I was a kid physical education was a part of every Childs day, like it or not. They dropped that from the curriculum which might coincide with the start of the obesity epidemic along with the high sugar/carb ultra processed foods. Phys Ed needs to return. Back then in little league baseball everyone got a treat after the game but the winner got a slightly nicer treat. I believe this helped to motivate those with greater potential to push themselves towards greatness.
7:57 I grew up in Health Spa circuit starting ‘66. Met many stars. I started weightlifting 🏋️♀️ my birthday age 8. Parents would not allow 🚫 beforehand whilst watching 3 older brothers yrs. To Bjorns point: Tease children to gain passion to do sports. 🏈 🏋️♀️They just might become a certified Champion. 🌹🇺🇸🇳🇴
Bravo Norway! I should mention that New Zealand outranked Norway at the Summer Olympics. We won't mention the Winter Olympics, but New Zealanders are regularly world champions in Rugby and sailing. We share the great opportunities afforded by outdoor activities.
It's been 10 years since I last visited Norway. Loved hiking there. Hoping to buy a camper and travel there again in the next few years with my family.
Great content today Bjorn. I coached hockey and we were always inclusive. We had the first girl she was 5. Now she is Olympic gold metal winner! Canada
My step-grandfather's Dad was from Norway. He left the country to become a merchant seaman when he was almost 16. I don't think he ever went home. The family stayed in contact with Robert's descendants in the United States, though. He lived an interesting life.
🙂Whenever you have forgotten your coffee, just sharpen your axe instead! I love your videos. They are so down to earth and refreshing, even if sometimes quite serious.
Yes Bjorn I really need to sharpen my axe. Can't wait to learn this new skill so I can participate in my new hobby of wood chopping. Cheers from Monika
I completely understand where you’re coming from and I wholeheartedly believe there needs to be more care, but I also think it’s healthy to teach (lovingly) that sometimes we get nothing for our efforts. We need to teach them to be ok with losing while being proud that they tried and it’s the trying that makes them better. I don’t believe in prizes for everyone but I do believe in acknowledgement for effort given. I don’t love your thoughtful videos in a sea of thoughtless ones ❤
i like your explanation and i wasnt a fan of the everyone gets a price but i think your view explains very well why its there. i've never seen it as a motivation thing, it makes sense and i can say i changed my mind. kids do get discouraged easily if they constantly lose and dont get seen.
Im from Slovenia,,we are 2 mil ppl only with much much lower budget than most other countries and check out our achivments :) we totaly rock in sports on elite lvl :)
Hello Bjorn, wow I didn’t know how high ranking Norway is in International sports. I have personally been active all my life. For me it stems from my parents who have always and continue to exercise. It’s important for physical and mental health and socialization. Therefore agree with your opinion on sports and children and how . 😊
So well said...bjorn ..people are really ignorant. A lot of gyms just don't come across as a positive place ...I'm using the gym here in london again I refuse to give up...signed up for 3 months ...its all about signing up ..and they don't appreciate you if you focus...and mind your own business. That doesn't mean that you have to be unfriendly .its just a different mind set ...
Hey, Bjorn 🙏 Hvordan har du det? Discovered your channel a couple months ago, and I really like to listen to you and see you in the wilderness. As someone who loves Nordic/Scandinavian countries, and holds Norway as his dream country - for many different reasons - I think many things that work in Norway would definitely not work in most other countries. You have a very particular cultura, that it is still a bit of an enigma to me in some aspects - I can’t still properly grasp it - that allows you to do things and make them work because of those ingredients. I’m from Portugal, and if we would try to “copy” part of the Norwegian “model” in different areas it would be a mess and would fail 😂 It’s an amazing country, that’s what Norway is, and it has been a generational work done by most of you 🇳🇴
Norway and Norwegians are Amazing! You have and have had World Champions and Olympic Champions in All Nordic sports, male and female, as well as in numerous other sports. You also have the World's Greatest Chessplayer (World Champion from 2013-2023) in Magnus Carlsen (1990 -). Not to mention All-time Greats in other fields of Endeavor: Henrik Ibsen (playwright), Edvard Grieg (composer), Edvard Munch (painter), Roald Amundsen (Polar explorer) and Leif Ove Andsne (1980 - Pianist).
Doping. Our national cross country team beat all of the finnish World Cup skiers. All of the finnish runners tested positve for EPO, yet we beat them all. Please.. Such a joke. We all KNOW that we cheat, it is time we start to admit to this. So embarrassed on behalf of norwegians touting their horn on this topic..
Here in Austria most sports became so expensive - sports became an upper class elite thing. Thats why I quit the gym and walk my dog in the woods. Thats still free.
Does this approach still work in a hyper-competitive society like the US? I wish it could, but reality says otherwise. The US is a zero-sum society, where someone only wins if someone else loses. It's frustrating, short-sighted, and a darn shame.
Sorry, but again ignored the Alpine countries. We have better climate, environment and infrastructure for sports. World champion in skiing, cross-country skiing, tennis, cycling, swimming, mountaineering, extreme competitons like Race Across America, Triathlon, MTB won by Swiss women race across America Isabelle Pulver, Nicole Reist, Marlen Reusser, Daniela Ryf, Natascha Badmann, Nicola Spirig, Jolanda Neff. When you see a cyclotourist riding from Cairo to Kapstadt: German or Swiss.
Kan man inte se geoengineering när man pekar ut det när det sker. Då finns det ingen anledning att säga något annat heller. Or do you need it on english? Free Reiner Fuellmich now!
Doesn’t surprise me honestly! Norway rules!! What’s shitty about America is if you put your kids into sports, then there’s something probably wrong with your kid. These days. Before it was thing you did.
I think you touched on an important point. The ultimate goal here is not winning medals and showing everyone how better you are than them in sport. It is getting the young into leading healthier outdoor lifestyles, socializing, and making friends. Sports is a means to do that.

Myth buster Bjorn, i like! i can also say that the Norwegians do not only excel in sports, but also in heavy metal!
Thank you, Bjorn.

Thank you for sharing. As usual you make some interesting and valid points.

My 15 year old grandson is in powerlifting. He's a big kid already 6 foot 3 inches tall and still growing.

USA has way more Olympic medals than any other country, by far, but per capita Norway being #1 is even more impressive.
It's been 10 years since I last visited Norway. Loved hiking there. Hoping to buy a camper and travel there again in the next few years with my family.
I loved watching Lasse Kjus and Kjetil Andre Aamodt when they were in their prime!

During the Winter Olympics we cheer equally for USA and Norway. Don’t have much use for summer Olympics
Sweden fifth and Denmark nineth, VIKING countries in the fist positions !!!

Did you not mention Magnus Carlsen? Chess not a sport, I suppose, but certainly a competition. Magnus the pride of Europe, as well as of Norway.
Yes, of course. And we have the golfer guy, and many others. Sometimes it's not easy to remember everything. These videos are not scripted.

I am sorry to tell you this Bjorn, but my friend Sven tells me that Sweden is the greatest sporting nation.
Here in Austria most sports became so expensive - sports became an upper class elite thing. Thats why I quit the gym and walk my dog in the woods. Thats still free.
At some point children too pick up on this. What do you do when participation trophies stop mattering?
Here's the thing: Even winning won't matter after a while. I know, I have been there.
all the skiers take asthma medicine

Scotland! We invented football
