Congratulations! My wife and I are celebrating 30 years in our home by replacing our leaking roof and as of a few days ago, a leaking oil tank inside the house. Home ownership can suck sometimes. No more police and fire dept. visiting your garage sales.
I hear that. New roof, new heat/actually unit ect.. all seems to break at once.
In 6 years we replaced the fence, a/c, roof, and the appliances. And had 3 large trees cut down. Yeah, it can be a drag. But on the bright side, property values have gone up about 65% during the same period here in Texas.
Yup there’s always something that breaks or needs service on!

Congratulations! My husband and I have been married for 42 years and up until last year we had some joint and some of our own, now everything is joint. Everyone handles their money differently I don't think there is a right or wrong way. In hindsight I would like to tell you to take time out, not just to work but to enjoy your life and what you have. We spent years paying off our mortgage and saving, working hard for retirement for what? We had 4 years and then my husband started to have mini strokes and now we are dealing with the early stages of dementia. All I'm am saying it take time to enjoy yourselves. Don't feel bad for us we still have a very good life and there is still lots of things we can do just different from what we had planed.

We split the main bills and pay for our own vehicles but we consider the money we get as "ours." After 12 years we do all right with this arrangement. We alternate buying groceries and paying for meals out.

As to your question of separate vs joint banking accounts, I have done it both ways. Each has both merit and short comings. It depends on how well you communicate and agree on budgeting and spending priorities.

My grandmother & grandfather had separate accounts for their checks to be deposited to, but each paid bills together. My grandmother told me a girl needs to have her own money nobody can tell her what to do with it! Shared accounts can be emptied by either party. Jebus adores you so just do you!
