Band of Brothers Podcast | Episode 10 with Damian Lewis | HBO Max

- Damian Lewis - the Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning actor - whose portrayal of Major Dick Winters is the centrifugal force of Band of Brothers - joins host Roger Bennett to reflect on why a classically-trained, well-heeled Englishman was cast as a salt-of-the-earth American war hero, and why two decades later, Band of Brothers remains more than just a job.

I worked on Band of Brothers for nearly the entire 9 months. Damien was a great leading man, such a true Gent.
Thank you for your part in making this great series happen, mate! Can I ask what you did on it?

I dont think Damian Lewis will read this but I do want to say my condolences on losing his wife. Helen, was a beautiful woman and an outstanding actress. By order of the Peaky fookin Blinders
Oh great now I'm sad
First discovered D. Lewis w Stephen King's, " Dream Catcher" fabulous performance. So when he showed up again in "Homeland", another stellar performance I nearly stopped watching if not for Clair and Manny. And "Billions", (Bobby "Axe" Axelrod) easily my favorite show. Very, very sorry for your loss mate. But, I hope he will continue acting, for he is Brilliant.
By far one of the best decisions HBO Max made.
20 years later, and BoB is still the gold standard of docu-dramas. These podcasts just show why. The cast and the writer knew they were doing something important.
Thank you HBO for now creating these pod-casts but also knowing 20 years ago that these stories need to be told by the people who lived them.
On the relationship between Nixon and Winters, he said that part of the reason they worked together so well was because in the morning Winters was at his best and Nixon wasn’t because he was hungover, but as the day wore on Nixon would start to come into himself as Winters wore out
Damian nailed the part so well. Best series ever!!

Grandpa said "No I served with a Company of Heroes!" This says it all. Thank you Easy Company and all our Military and their families for the Freedom you have provided for Our great country and the world.
My dad knew Mike Ranney in college, they were in the same fraternity. Dad was Glider Infantry in the 17th AB, he was one of 55 guys in his platoon to walk into the Battle of the Bulge, and then was one of only 5 that walked out 45 days later. He then went over the Rhine in a glider in Operation Varsity on March 24, '45. (Bronze Star, Purple Heart) He never knew Mike Ranney was in WWII until reading Ambrose's book. They just never talked about the war years.
I love how Damian downplays his on-screen charisma to "they probably chose me because I was the most BORING". Thank you so much to HBO and Roger for doing this. I'm so sad that it's over, but what a way to finish. I'll be re-listening for years to come.
The German general’s speech is always so profound to me. I think it’s maybe the best moment of the series. Winters’ face says it all there when listening. That scene titles the series right there. It always chokes me up even more and is nice listening to, considering that I know German. Liebgott did a great job translating. It’s pretty much perfect. Damian gives one of the all-time great performances, for me, on television, and I will never forget it and the memory of Winters. It was a large part of my childhood. Thank you for these.
wish the german general would have told them if they had had a set of balls at the beginning and refused to attack other countries for a luntic leader, then they really would have been couragous, but the square jawed general missed that part.
@@barkeater7867 I guess I understand somewhat what you’re saying, but perhaps also disagree. A General does not condemn his men after surrender, plus the British and French had quite a hand in the war’s beginning, I’d say.
As a Jew, I can say without a doubt that the German general did not choke me up.
@@barkeater7867 You seriously need to go away and learn why the German people were so receptive to Hitler. The reparations Germany were forced to pay, after WWI, and the restrictions on what the German government could do post-WWI, crippled Germany and drove the people into Hitler's arms. The Allies were definitely a major part of the reason Hitler swept to power in the late 1920's.
Great finale to the podcast. Thank you Roger and the people at HBO that made this happen.
I grew to have a crush on Damian Lewis watching him portray Major Winters. It was an excellent film. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are such great film makers. Thank you for your interviews.
Me too. I wish he were in more things I'm interested in.
You can tell Damian Lewis still embraces the character he played and the entire series. He speaks so enthusiastically, in fact he seems to indeed relive the entire story and every scene. I wouldn't have wondered if he even had fallen back into his American accent he had so magnificently mastered in the series.
Winters was such a leader. I'll be rewatching the box set again, during our winter months every year over here in Ireland. Thank you Band of Brothers for making me a better person too.
It is one of those things you can watch over again and again and still catch something new.
Funny. To think that a true life movie can make a person know he can work to be a better human being. I know what your saying brother, I’d like to think because of what these men went through and how rough they had it and how soft life has been for me. That the least I can do now is to be a better person, every chance I can
i have been looking for Damian's interview about his experience in BOB ever since I finish watching the show 20 years ago. Finally we have it here. What a brilliant interview. Thank you
I remember watching this as a 16 year old when it came out. I was absolutely obsessed with the series and I got my high school buddies hooked as well. I've probably watched it 50 times since. Never gets old !
II loved this series based on true real life men who served in the 101 Parchute Division in Normandy and France, etc. during WWII. . Marvelous performances by all those men who portrayed the actual heroes. And yes, there were inacuracies in the story which would be expected as is expected in writing and acting for other men most of whom were long gone. But I believe Speilberg and Hanks did a brilliant job, along with all others involved, in brinking this period in out history and those who were there to the world. I loved it in spite of all the critics have said, and have watched it numerour times. Very thankful for all who took part. Love to all.
Nothing better to listen to on this Veterans Day of 2021. Absolutely incredible podcast. Thank you Roger, HBO, men that portrayed the heroes, and most of all, the heroes themselves. I will be forever grateful for their sacrifice, for the more free world that we have now. I will carry that respect and gratefulness to my grave, I swear on everything in my life.
Yes, agree, it’s a debt we cannot repay.
I see why Mr. Lewis is such a great actor. He has scope and depth when discussing human nature, especially when he referenced the "manhood" forged from war and combat. "...and gentlemen in England now-a-bed shall think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whilest any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day."
I knew Damian Lewis from The Forsyte Saga before seeing BoB (which I have seen several times). His acting in everything is excellent. His accent in BoB was flat out amazing!!
What is it about the soundtrack that still, after 20 years, brings a tear to my eyes and a lump to my throat.
I love Damian Lewis, and this is my favorite role of his. Thank you for this interview and podcast!
Not gonna lie, I've heard the BOB opening theme hundreds of times and every time I hear it I get choked up and misty-eyed.
Same
Again I think this just needs to go on and on. All the stories we could learn. I would love to learn more About Luz, Perconte, Babe, Webster, Sobel. So many more. This has been great to listen to.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We Will Remember Them
These men all live on in my heart...
39:55 I have seen the show many times, have seen that particular moment dozens of times and even while having a dinner, while listening to this podcast I could feel my eyes getting all wet as I was listening to Winters saying the hero bit. This show is the most amazing piece of television ever created.
I'm so sad this is over. I've listened to each episode several times. Perfect way to end this BTW......absolutely perfect ❤
I know a lot of people say Breaking Bad or The Wire etc is the best TV show of all time, but for me Band of Brothers eclipse them all, a truly astonishing piece of TV.
Damian Lewis’ American accent was so good, before I learned the truth, I thought he was an American actor!! Same for Ross McCall, who played Liebgott….
It’s weird hearing him in his normal accent. He plays so many American characters, with “Major Winters” being his most famous one.
What an incredible podcast series this has been - Well done! I do think it would of been worthwhile giving an honourable mention to Michael Kamen, who composed and conducted the music for the series in collaboration with The London Metropolitan Orchestra. 🎶 It really did bring everything together into the best TV series ever made.
Absolutelly, Anton!! couldn´t agree more
Well done Rog, I've REALLY enjoyed listening to all the episodes and religiously watch the series every year. Curahee !!!!!!
Man he just nailed the accent. I would have never guessed he was British.
The best day to post episode 10, Veterans Day! 🇺🇸
I'd love to say something properly profound but I'm just ❤️😭
Thanks for this podcast, it's been amazing
I really enjoyed every episode of this podcast. And thank you for extending this series through a podcast. And thank you for honoring the Greatest Generation!🇺🇸
This series obviously honoured Easy company but I see it as representing all allied soldiers throughout the War, who’s stories will never be told.
His American accent is spot on!
Just like the show, this podcast series will be a yearly re-visit
I had a great uncle who died in pretty much the same way as Janovec, in May 1945, just as the war ended. He was on a supply run in France and hit a pothole on his motorbike. He's just another name on the war memorial in my town in central England.
As an aside, my patriarchal side of the family comes from the US. I found out only recently that I have a great uncle who served in Charlie company, 101st.
Whereabouts in central England?

Great podcast. Thanks for having it. I hope to experience more from the guys who portrayed the real men, especially for the 20th anniversary of the production.
"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea."
Samuel Johnson, 1778.
Thank you thank everyone involved and most especially the men of Easy and all the veterans of all the wars. If only we humans could be as selfless with each other without war.
Man, I’ve been waiting for this! Luckily I’m off work today and get to watch it’s immediate release. I truly hope this somehow continues or that maybe we move onto the Pacific which was also fantastic. Not quite as good a BoB but definitely a worthwhile endeavor IMO to cover. 2020 was the 10 year anniversary of the Pacific so it would be a timely Podcast as well. Anyway, thank you sir for doing this. Best thing to happen since the series itself. Kudos.
A beautifully timed podcast series. Well done Roger and all those interviewed. I have had a passion for military history since a teenager of the 70s however until Saving Private Ryan and then BoB it was always the fascination of the events, the machines, the equipment and the merchandise that was associated to WW2. These productions finally made it about the men and the wider people. A production that will be analysed for generations to come and deservedley so.
What a great interview. All the cast members gave such great performances. Band of Brothers was a game-changing mini-series the way it honored the memory of men who "served in a company of heroes."
Thank you for this series Rog. Band of Brothers has had such an impact on my life and it was fascinating to learn so much more about it.
One of the most beautiful story I have ever heard. Perfect.
I'm gutted these interviews are over but oh so grateful they happened. Roger, I could listen to you interview a tree stump. Thank you.
thank you. i've enjoyed each moment of this series, and looked forward to it each week. your hard work and dedication is unmatched.

Huge respect to all the heroes in WW2 including Easy Comapny too... Thank u very much HBO for made this happen... 🖤❤️
A social document. What a great thing to call it. ..and the be revered a century from now, I am sure. A masterpiece.
Thanks for posting all of these episodes, every one was a quality listen.
my sister used to be an actress. she was often insecure about herself in acting so she did what damian did, place herself in the character she's portraying and be that character.
Man, Im going to miss getting new episodes of this.
Thank you for making this podcast series, it was wonderful.
Weird hearing the British accent.. but makes me realize how damn good his American accent is. Impressive.
Don't know if anyone reads these 2 years on but I remember this being on in the UK but I was stationed in West Germany with the British Army & asked my mum to record every episode onto VHS tapes LOL
I do have the box set on DVD now of course LOL
Currahee!
Fantastic!!! So glad to hear of this interview
Brilliant interview. Loved the series, and loved that it was true to life. Amazing story of leadership, very admirable.
Major Winter’s: I served in a company of hero’s
Me: 😭💦
What a brilliant interview .
Thanks for this, it was fantastic 👏
Tremendous series of podcasts. Thank you.
War is probably the most transcendent, sensory/life experience you could ever have. There is a reason why a lot of men want to stay or go back if a war is still raging. They always say the heroes are the ones that sacrificed their lives. I get that.
“I just flew in from (location.) Boy! Are my arms tired!” That is an ancient American joke. Americans have been telling that joke since the Wright Brothers invented the airplane.
Along with The Pacific almost as good, I consider this the greatest cinematography that Hollywood ever produced. They will never create something this good again. Curahee!!!
loved this podcast series
The grid coordinates on the screen are of Berchtesgaden, Germany
& I hadn't played the series on Amazon in a while, so it's a good time to play it again 😊
Can't get enough of this series. Pacific gets a lot attention for the fierce fighting that took place there, personally Europe was just as horrific and there was more if it. Very good acting.
No way. The European theater didn't involve kamikaze attacks, cannibalism, desecration, torture, all kinds of horrific violence against POWs. The Eastern front was awful, but neither side practiced cannibalism and suicide attacks. You clearly know very little of the Pacific theater. The Marines were fighting in jungle. Jungle warfare is far worse than fighting in civilized land. A German general once said that jungle warfare was the worst because even if you're not in combat, the jungle will kill you.
Were there venomous snakes, spiders, scorpions in the European theater? All kinds of biting and stinging insects (except for mosquitos)? Did men contract malaria? Hepatitis? Jungle rot? You have no idea.
@@catherinelw9365another thing to note was that island fighting general generally had no "frontline", so no matter where you were, you were never safe.
Outstanding podcast series. Hated to see it end.✌
"We Happy Few, We Band Of Brothers, For He Who Today Sheds His Blood With Me, Shall Be My Brother" - King Henry VIII
lol... Henry V. Henry VIII was the fat one who had relationship issues.
@@garethgazz9332 You're both wrong. It was Shakespeare who wrote those words.
@@Jagsm29 Yes, in the play Henry V...
Henry VIII wtf 😂😂
Please, do the Pacific next. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Incredible end to a podcast, for the end of an incredible series.
What I wonder is if Damian when going to a reunion, does he revert back to his American accent when greeting his fellow Actors?
I think Lewis would have made a fine officer. He’s far more cerebral and driven than he likes to admit. He’d have been a British officer in WWII and probably a very good one.
Excellent podcast
love this podcast series. thanks
Thank you! Happy Veterans Day!
I enjoyed looking up the latitude/longitude coordinates posted with each of these podcasts.
Most of them indicate a location with a strong connection to the episode that the podcast discusses (though ep 3 fits better if you swap the W for E).
The only one that I can't figure out the connection for is the intro podcast

'The Quiet Man' 1952 movie.
Another Talented Redhead Actor.
They should make a show about one of them men after the war. How they integrated into daily life. How the country got back to normal. How the men felt sitting at home after being in such terrible environments. Did the men keep in contact with others? Etc

Excellent!
No David Webster though?
This is my fav episode of the series and podcast. It’s odd to hear Damien talk without an English accent.

Oh wow I thought this was only on spotify. I'm surprised its on youtube too.
I interrupted watching BoB to watch these podcasts. Time to get back to the action! It’s about to get COLD…

Really wish HBO would give us a release date on Masters of the Air, "Mid spring" is right now, it's almost summer and there's not a peep from anybody about an air date
I googled it and it's supposed to be released on September 20, 2023. Just around the corner, if they're correct.
Is this podcast available on other platforms? Really enjoy the format, it’s absolutely brilliant and highly appreciated.
