  • JJ6 (Doddie) has been wingstretching, hopping and almost helicoptering for days, and did finally achieve a helicopter. He continued practising through the night 17-18 July, and this morning at 06.13.29, with a couple of shakes of his wings, he was off - JJ6 has fledged! He flew strongly and confidently, and stayed away for more than five hours, returning at 11.39.35 with a smooth landing as if he's been flying a lot longer than just this first flight. Captured here are the moments before he fledges, the actual first flight, and his return.
    I wanted to set this real-time sequence to music and "the 'Ocean" by Frédéric Chopin seems to fit perfectly for a bird which lives on a diet of fish, with many thanks to Anastasia Huppmann for allowing her performance to be used under creative commons. Nice video, meaningful and demanding! It reflects the pure soul of the maker and his love for precious birds, which the viewer fully feels. Thank you for the joyful pictures, which are sometimes touching but hopeful.

    Beautiful footage and music, it just fits so well together. You can almost hear the siblings say "Hey what was it like, tell us all about it!" Thank you for this. I will listen to the whole piece at some point. I have been to a virtual organ & piano concert just now so the music is still ringing in my ears.

    I've watched this quite a few times already.. It's perfectly perfect Ty.. Which remaining Osplet gets "flight of the bumble bee" score? Your compilations are great.

      Thanks Carol! I couldn't find a 'creative commons' performance of Bumblebee, Ride of the Valkyries or 633 Squadron which were my other choices, so went with the Ocean instead - beautiful music befitting such a lovely event, and Ospreys are fish eater so it seemed appropriate.

    thought something nasty may have happened when i tuned in again after watching one day to the next and saw a nest of 3 down to a nest of 2 but when i "rewound" the timeline i could see what had happened and was delighted...just wondering why one youngster is so far ahead of his siblings in fletching and when do they decide to finally leave the nest for good???...will they also migrate with their parents?

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doddie hatched first, on 29th May, so would fledge ahead of the other two. Fledging is usually, but not always, at 50-53 days, today is day 53 for Vera so she could go at any time. They all migrate separately.

      @@GeemeffGeemeff Nice one...thanks...meant fledging...i think "fletching" is something else altogether...not sure they would appreciate donating their feathers for arrows 8-))...i am amazed at how quickly they've grown!

      @GeemeffGeemeff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@brodie4603 Auto-correct strikes again! Doesn't like 'fledge'. Yes, their growth rate is astounding. Just think, they hatched 29/5, 1/6 and 3/6, and three months later by early September they'll be off into the unknown on an epic journey down to Africa. Fingers crossed they all make it, sadly mortality rate for first-years is 50-60%

    I'm sure he stayed away for that length of time hoping that that bloody piano would have stopped by then.

      Mute the sound then - it's what I do when Aila starts fish-calling!
