MXM held such promise, too bad the GPU manufacturers didn't set a single standard for it and left it up to the notebook manufacturers and it has all but failed. I can get an RTX 2080 MXM card for my Clevo-based machine but that's the end of the line as it doesn't look like there will be any RTX Super MXM cards (or beyond).

The main issue with mxm is you need to have a thicker laptop, and most people don't wanna carry around a brick like that, but it definitely has it's use, I hope all laptops will be upgradeable in the future somehow, without sacrificing on thickness too much, as I don't need a super thin laptop either, I want to have all needed ports and a large enough battery, not to mention decent cooling.

Tell me more, cause tomorrow my basic GPU firepro 6000m was burned, and I need to replace it by something more powerful, u know. Thanks man!
yup, works the same as the m6700 insofar as upgradeability, except the m6700 can take a 4k eDP 120hz sharp IPS display with mods, and a quadro P5000 (gtx 1070) with an engineering sample vbios so long as one has an eDP panel, the m6800 cannot do this without coming with a 3d screen or touch screen model afaik.

Alienware GPUs are just re-labeled Dell GPUs, so they should work fine. GPUs from other OEMs can be hit-or-miss. They may work perfect, they may work perfect but not sleep properly, or they may not work at all. If you want to play it safe, Dell/Alienware GPUs are the best bet.

You are a true master with the hardware. Do you know if its possible to put a more gamer friendly GeForce GPU into a Precision 7750 (or 7730) instead of the Quadro?
Unfortunatly, no. The best you could do would be to upgrade to a Quadro RTX 5000 which would be roughly equivalent to an RTX 2080. You'd need the official dell part because the Precision 7750 doesn't use standard MXM graphics cards. You could also just get an eGPU...

When I install driver for the dedicated graphics card I just installed. The entire screen starts showing/blinking different colors in succession, then the computer turns off and restarts.
@Griffen Sander will you be able to upgrade to gtx 1070m?
Very nice video. I'm looking to upgrade GPU on my m6700, but looking more towards the Radeon Pro WX7100 MXM (from 7200 precisions). Did you also consider radeons for this?
Hello, can you link to a guide to mod the ini file… I’m currently rocking, a m4700 and I put a m2200(2017) but I’ve had my eyes on a gtx 1650, and I know I’m going to run into the handshake problem.. or signature.. and yes, I know I could probably just get some used gaming laptop on eBay.. for about the same price I’ve invest in everything.. but what’s the fun in that? Lol but great video man!
How about dell precision 7510?? Can I upgrade the gpu?
Hi! You just replace card and everything works okay?! No dancing around BIOS settings and updates??? Cause I know, that basic BIOS supports only quadro cards 3000,4000,5000 and Radeon Firepro m6000. Tell me more, cause tomorrow my basic GPU firepro 6000m was burned, and I need to replace it by something more powerful, u know. Thanks man!
did u try it?
Oh ok, great vídeo, so a dell m6800 also accepts a gtx 980m? Do I have to make some kind of hardware change for this?
yup, works the same as the m6700 insofar as upgradeability, except the m6700 can take a 4k eDP 120hz sharp IPS display with mods, and a quadro P5000 (gtx 1070) with an engineering sample vbios so long as one has an eDP panel, the m6800 cannot do this without coming with a 3d screen or touch screen model afaik.
Salve io avrei bisogno di qyella gpu mi sa dire dove posso trovarla?
How can I do this kind of mod? I have a M6600 with a Quadro 3000M and I have some GTX580M (From an Alienware M18X) around I put one of them inside and it won't seems to be recognized those
Nice video! Where did you buy it for $190? I'm interested in buying one for my Alienware m17x. Thanks in advance!
Thanks! I got it from someone on eBay.
it should work on the Alienware M17x r3, r4 and newer models than that (haswell and skylake afaik both have MXM gpus, in newer models than those they switched to Dell graphics format (DGF)
Please am using the same M6700 but it stop work and turn to black screen when am using it for graphics works
i have a dell m4800 with quadro k2100 and i want to upgrate vga.So can you help me what vga is the best choice?
Thank you so much.
thinking of getting this card for my clevo/sager to replace the 485m in it, but its pretty expensive
Jo bro
I have a question about video card and is it possible to add this video card Nvidia GTX1060M?
Hi, I've did the same thing, but from Firepro M6000 to 970M 6 gb gpu, as i know dell/alienware didn't made 9xx series mxm card, then no vbios change available, so the driver has to be modded to work.
hi sir i want to ask
i have alienware 17 with i7-4700qm and gtx 880m (broken ) i replace it with m1000m (i buy it with 20 dollars ) it so slow so i want to buy another mxm gpu i find gtx 980 150 dollar so expensive
and i find gtx 970m and quadro m4000m and m3000m under 100 dollar wat is the best for me and thx
Alienware 17 with Gtx770M ...can I set it up to Gtx980M or better for Call of duty warzone 2??
Nice! Thanks a lot for the video. Is it possible to have same upgrade on M4800? and what is the strongest GPU compatible? Thanks again.
Dear Griffen, thanks for the amazing video, I had a question if you could help me, my M6700, has a 3840mq CPU & it's graphic card is a firepro m6000. Can I upgrade to a GTX980M too? What exactly do I need for that? I mean do I need to buy a compatible heatsink or X bracket etc. I'm familiar with the mode driver part though. thanks a lot
IIRC you'll need the heatsink from an M6700 with an Nvidia GPU and you'll need a quadro k-series x-bracket.
@@griffensander Thanks a lot man.
be sure to put thermal pads on the rear v-ram, and swap pads from the old gpu to the new gpu or your 980m will die an early death
@@arbitrarygrill6886 I'll keep that in mind, thanks
@@Pernoctate You can take it off the old card as long as the old card is the same brand as the new card (AMD brackets only work on AMD cards, Nvidia brackets only work on Nvidia cards).
I ve got really important question, do I need specific GTX980M to upgrade my m6700?
I can see a lot of gtx980m from Alienware or MSI, I'm just not sure if that ll do the job.
I have an Alienware M18R2, and its got a pair of 7970m's in there. I believe the 980s can go in but requires bios and driver work... :/
Great video, need that 680M for my MSI GT70
This is not so easy to change the graphics card as it seems like. I'm having an issue with GTX 880M and I got a 970M but it looks like VBiOS update neccessary to work with my notebook. Can you please tell me, how did you change it? It was working so simply?
Hello, I have the very same M6700 and now choosing between 980m and 970m for upgrade. It would be very helpful to know, how hot 980m in the games, as it has 100 Watt TDP instead of 970m's 75 Watt. Thank you.
I don’t use this laptop anymore, but the 980m never overheated. IIRC it ran around 80c during extended loads.
@@griffensander Thanks, that's the most direct answer I've been able to find :)
Never had an luck with modded gpu drivers as you are more or less stuck with old drivers doing this.
I have dell e6530 laptop
With intel r hd graphic 4000 can i upgrade this
Hi Griffin. Is it possible to replace a 1650 graphics card from an Acer Aspire with a 1660ti card from an Acer Predator laptop?
How would you know if you need more power ? and would it be safe to use more powerful adapter?
Is there a laptop with an 8th generation Intel processor or higher that supports changing the graphics card?
so with modded bios will just about any MXM graphics card work as long as it will physically fit?
As long as it’s MXM 3.0B variant yes mate that is correct
@@FieryWings01 rtx time
@@ratboyOwO sure if you can find one that will work and is a decent price? 🧐
Interesting video, I’m looking to eventually do the same with my m6800. In one of your previous videos you installed MacOS, just curious to know if that picked up the new GPU okay?
I had to downgrade from Mojave to High Sierra to install the Nvidia Web Drivers, but after doing that it works perfectly.
it should be identical as a process on the m6800 far as I'm aware, it does not work on an m6600 however.
@@arbitrarygrill6886 I have a m6800 as well and it has a AMD Radeon HD 8950 and I am struggling to find basiclly any information on it and im starting to thing that this laptop was upgraded before, and it very well may be becuase I got it from an electronic recyclers. The upgrades ive done though are, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, 1tb hdd. So i was just asking if you know if I could upgrade it to a gtx 980M?
I bought a M6700 with a 3740qm. I'm planning on using my Clevo GTX 970m 6gb that I had from my dead Clevo p157sm. The vbios worked in my hP 8760w, so hopefully it works on the m6700. Lol
I'm planning on upgrading my m6700 covet that currently has a k5000m to the 980m.
I'm curious what thickness of thermal pads you used on yours with the additional modules.
I believe I stacked some up to get the required height. My 980m came with it's thermal pads still attached.
Dear all, Is it possible to mount a LAPTOP video card such as a GTX 1080 MXM on a
desktop PC? Is there an adapter cable from the laptop video card attachment
(which I don't know what it's called exactly) to PCI-e 16? then I can see the
cooling and power supply but I would need to know if it is possible to connect
a laptop card to a normal desktop PC. Any information of any kind is very
welcome. Thank You
Greazie Davide.
Wow! You've earned a sub sir, also if I may ask, how did you modify your 5000m to be a 680m? Thanks in advance!
Thank you! The only difference between the K5000M and the GTX 680M is the clock speeds each GPU runs at. I flashed a VBIOS that raised the K5000M's clock speeds to match the GTX 680M.
@@griffensander ah, gotcha! Thanks so much!
Could you post a video showing how to mod thr inf? I have had absolutely no luck after watching so many videos
This is the guide I used. It explains everything very plainly and should help you understand what needs to go where: null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php
@Griffen Sander I will try that thank you for the response!
excelente fotografia!!!!....
which gpus are compatible with the dell precision m6600 apart from the stock???
hey i got dell inspiron 3542 can i upgrade it to gtx graphic card?
Do you have some idea adaption of driver Nvidia Quadro k5100m for Dell M6700? I search about archive INF trick of installation. But, I don't know the secret it. My computer don't recognize, but in CPU-Z appear video card.
Great video Griffen. Will GTX 1070m work in Dell Precision m6800?
Not really. I think someone has got the GTX 10xx series working, but it had tons of issues and wasn't suitable for regular use. The 9xx series is the highest you can go and have everything working perfectly.
Thanks mate.
What a goose.
i changed the video card but i can't find it please can you tell me what to do
i have dell privision m6800
i7-4910MQ /quardo k4100m
can i do this upgrade?
Yes. Be aware though that you'll likely have to use a custom modded driver. Not as intimidating as it sounds, here's a gide on how to do it: null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php
I upgraded my P4000 card to my M6800 and it's working well. I'm keeping an eye on the HP RTX 4000 card. Has anyone upgraded to the RTX 4000 card on the M6800?
Hey Griffen great video! Love how to the point it is. I am trying to do the exact same upgrade, on the exact same machine. Would you mind linking the inf file you used?
I could, but that INF file will be different for every GPU.
Instead, I'll link to the excellent guide I found for creating the INF files: null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php
Best of luck!
How understand wich laptop have MXM type B or type A
aren't Pascal and Turing available in MXM slots? 🤔 I mean even a 1060 is faster than 980m, not to mention 1070 or 1080 which should had been available for mxm. I mean sure some games would experience CPU bottleneck but for graphically intense games it would perform incredibly well compared to 980m.
They are, but they don't work in the M6700.
@@griffensander what about 1650 or rtx2060 ?
I plan to Buy a Precision 4800, Its compatible with this gpu?
