Salah has 11 assists in the league and Palmer has 6, yet Palmer’s created 48 chances this season and Salah’s created 32. Creative models like expected assists and expected assisted goals also have them neck and neck. Salah having more assists doesn’t mean he’s necessarily been more creative, he just has been the recipient of better finishing on the end of his passes. Watch games or look at the underlying numbers and I don’t think most people come to the conclusion Salah’s more creative. Shot-creating actions per 90: Salah - 4.40, Palmer - 5.56. Salah’s been marginally the better goalscorer this season. 12 non-penalty goals vs 9. But he’s also playing in a slightly better team and a different position with different responsibilities. I don’t think you can use the fact that Lampard scored slightly more against Gerrard because Gerrard played in a worse team, but I also don’t think you can use it against Lampard because it’s not his fault he played in a better team (same way it isn’t Salah’s fault that Liverpool have been a good team for most of his time there). The opposition knows they can put two players on Palmer, crowd out the middle and give up space on the wings etc because if you cut Palmer out that’s the biggest threat. Despite his reputation, Salah doesn’t actually get that treatment. Maybe it’s because of the threat of Diaz or maybe it’s because you can’t afford to give up space in the middle in the Premier League. Either way, Salah gets way more space, especially in big games, than Palmer does. Whenever Palmer gets the ball in space, he’s absolute quality.
