You can see at first they're legitimately struggling to draw their leaf but as it goes on it's just them trying to fix random pixels left by griefers
And it seems that, even tho they figured out the shape, it's so complex that a few griefed pixels make it so hard to tell how to fix it.
Hell, they started using RubberRoss' system to assign specific pixels to specific users yet they had so many griefer bots that it was impossible

A lot of people end up playing the event though, and it goes on for long enough that people are able to make images and text, all by drawing along with random strangers on the internet, or grouping up and working together.

These things were being coordinated from the corresponding subreddits, with special threads dedicated to drawing. Similar to how cooperatives work, not as emergent as you think.

As a Canadian, there's not a single person I know who can draw the leaf, back in school when we drew the flag they let us write the word Leaf instead of actually trying to draw it.

Can you imagine the stress of that though? You’re trying to coordinate drawing this really vague shape, and you look over and see the people next to you drawing a baguette, the Eiffel Tower, and ANIMATED wine.. Props to the goose that slipped in there a few times. The wolf(?) suddenly getting a drink was my favorite part of this area though.
The coordination wasn't the hard part. We had the template finished pretty early on. The trouble was fighting off the bots.
I was there, trying to keep things under control. 90% of the accounts placing incorrect pixels were fresh accounts with no karma. We never figured out who was botting against us, but it was pretty obvious someone was.

As a Canadian, I must say that the maple leaf is one of the most difficult things to draw, even if you trace it
only that you could just put a template over it and then put the pixel in the right place, like, fuck the rest of the flag if it turns into cannabis or bananas. you could have just kept the form of the leave while all that happens. not even make it red and let the wrong red ones go away, just make the outer line black for now

That’s what people did to show they had an alliance. If you had an alliance with your neighbour then you would draw a little heart between the two. Then if one of them got attacked by bots or streamers or another community, the other group would help protect them.

This is why one of the most fundamental rules of flaglore is that it should be quick and easy to draw/color from memory. Some rulesets specify that a child should be able to do it just by having the flag described to them.

Hard to believe French people are able to defend against thousands of raiders at 6 in the morning. The bots are programmed to place a specific color in a specific spot, so when the r/place ended and all colors got replaced with white the entire French flag dissapeared in under 5 minutes.
People complained about this a lot once the event was over since Reddit didnt put any requirements as to who can participate, so an account that is 0 days old with 0 karma and a randomized name is able to place pixels. Kinda ruins the point of the entire event.
the best part is when Germany decided to put a leaf on their flag and did it in like 30 minutes

As a french i love ireland because they constantly tell the british to f off by their very existence.
You can see the wine constantly getting drank and refilled throughout the entire thing, no grieving that really destroys it, just people being thirsty. This is the kind of grieving I can get behind.

If you watch the French flag around the 2:20 mark people start trying to make it just the pure French flag but people almost instantly return the wine and the tower. When a group is determined about something nothing can stop them, except Canada who was stopped by a leaf.

The fact that the people attempting to make the canada flag let bananas slid and take over their flag for a split seconds there before finally taking over it again really makes it like theyve had enough of their flag
They were being griefed, they knew how to make the flag, it's just that someone was trying to grief it and make it a banana, the person making Canada tried to make a second flag to stop it from being griefed I believe, so the griefer took it but then just erased it and continues griefing the first flag
