The maintenance of a yacht costs between 10 and 20 percent of its value per year. The price of the yachts is much more than 100 million each

I hitch-hiked with a guy who said owning a boat was like a hole in the ocean that he has to constantly throw money into.
I own a boat and I had to moore it on an obscure beach miles from civilization and took the outboard motor home with me. It is a little fishing boat with a tiny cabin, all fiberglass and I found even the marina fees totally crazy. It's almost like 1/4 of a house's rent! Who can afford that?
They say the second happiest day in a boat-owner's life is the day they buy their boat. The happiest day is the day they sell it.

I dont know if it is common out there, but here in Brazil a lot of boat owners share a boat. You get two or three rich friends, everyone pays out and everyone sorts out who gets the boat when. Everything laid down in a contract etc.
Otherwise would be too expensive even for rich people (obviously not talking about billionaires or people with hundred of millions)
The power move is to have a friend/family member who has a boat.
I saw the one docked in Trieste and I thought it was weird seeing such a huge yacht all on its own near a cargo harbour so I looked it up on google and they literally had it listed as a tourist attraction. Had a great laugh, props to the Italian government.

I'm from Trieste, and for a period it was a lot of fun because for reasons of currents and maritime traffic they move it almost every day and therefore we made bets on how far They would have moored it!

If it is decided the yacht cannot be sold and will be returned to the original owner when sanction is lifted, but don't know for how long, make it into a homeless shelter just to spite the yacht owner.
Until they are confiscated they are private property. The Government is just holding them for the oligarchs. By the way if they hand them back to the oligarchs in Russia, Russia will confiscate them and sell them for back taxes the oligarchs owe. Which in turn will fund the war longer.

I've fought and lost this battle with a car repair shop, who left dents in the sides, scratches on the dashboard, and destroyed my clutch (probably from joy rides by mechanics using my car to learn how to drive stick).
@@justincarter7954You just submit it to your insurance, then your insurance will sue the tow companies insurance. It's their job to document the condition of the vehicle before they tow it, regardless of why it's being towed.

putting it into a dry dock will make that dock unable to service other ships, which will result into losing a lot of money. Building a dedicated storage facility just for these yachts, obviously, costs a lot too.
And you can't just park them in a random field.

It's ok. Most of the aerial stock footage you see comes from government drone strike videos. Once they edit out the "strike" part they have hours of footage to sell.

The best law I can think of is that when public money for maintenance equals the value of the ship, it becomes public property. I also find it hard to believe a few private parties haven't already happened.

The Armadea yacht is, speculatively, worth $300 million. The US could hold it for many years at $10 million a year, and still supposedly profit from it if it came to an eventual sale, or at least eventually get the owner/shell companies of it to pay any incurred costs and interest.

despite this being plausible, the Yacht still loses value over time even if it’s kept in immaculate condition. A yacht like this will take years to sell, unless sold for cheap. say it takes 5yrs to sell the yacht, theyll spend $50mil in upkeep in that time, and the yacht will likely lose around $50-100mil in value over that time. now you’re selling a yacht that was $300mil for $200mil and youve already spend $50-100 million in upkeep
The beauty of this all to the US government is the speculative valuation of the asset. They don’t need to sell it to borrow against it, just to have someone believe it’s worth something, at least long enough until said politicians are out of office, and enjoying their retirement funds.
Guess they should start leasing the yachts to pay for maintenance. It could be more profitable than just selling them.

Noticed this yacht earlier this morning as I left San Diego airport. Pretty cool to hear its story.
The other result is that because the yacht was seized by a foreign government, under the fifth amendment, if the U.S. sold the yacht, we’d have to pay the shell company the money. A boat costs one tenth of its price per year in maintenance costs. So a hundred million dollar yacht costs ten million dollars in maintenance per year. If any of these countries holds the yachts for ten years, even if they sell them they will lose money. It wasn’t a well thought out strategy. An additional complication is that many of the ogliarchs whom these yachts are purportedly owned by are now dead, having for some reason reason fallen out of a window or being in an automobile accident, complete with bullet holes in the chest. Nothing to see here folks, move along.
Teak is know for almost not molding and rotting that's why they are used. Probably the wood under it to keep the teak in place is molding and that's the problem.

Seems like you could take a few steps to at least mitigate costs a little? Take them up a river (fresh water), in a slightly cooler climate (reduce mold), to a middle-of-nowhere dock (save mooring fees)? Dry docking is another idea but they'd have to find somewhere super cheap and dry-docking boats of that size aren't cheap so they'd have to build their own? You could climate control it if it was inside but those are still huge boats to dry-dock indoors.

It was taken legally. That's what sanctions are. They cannot (at least not yet) seize it, but they can freeze it.
That's the point. It's NOT illegal. The States can confiscate the boats legally under suspicion of being owned by sanctioned individuals. Just like the cops can confiscate goods suspected to be stolen. But to seize and sell it the state needs to prove that claim! And the states don't want to illegally take them as that would undermine rule of law which Russia has proven doesn't make you very popular.

A boat is like a bouncy castle, but instead of a blower to keep the castle inflated, a boat needs regular cash expenditure to stay afloat. If you don't spend the money, it will literally sink. What about Canada's sitation with the largest airplane in the world. It was delivering COVID supplies to Toronto Pearson Airport just before the federal Minister of Transport issued the NOTAM (Notice to Airman) closing Canadian airspace to Russian-owned or controlled aircraft. Thus it cannot fly. The Government of Canada has frozen it as a result of our sanctions, and are now starting court proceedings to seize the asset as property of His Majesty in right of Canada (confiscation basically). But, in the meanwhile, the airplane cannot move and the not-for-profit Greater Toronto Airports Authority whcih leases and operates Toronto Pearson Airport is charging it massive parking bills. But GTAA cannot get those parking bills paid because Canada won't allow transactions with Russia and of course the Russian company ain't to keen to pay a parking fee because it cannot fly its airliner.
"Confiscating" and "seizing assets" are merely legal sounding terms for stealing and robbing. I understand that the govt might want to freeze assets because of some concerns but as soon as those concerns are mitigated, the assets should be returned to their rightful owners.

@@jacktattersall9457 Fair enough. But then these valid sounding terms should not be used when there is no evidence that the assets were obtained via crime. For example, the yatches and other property of Russians that was forcibly taken by western governments.
Also, if the assets were bought via crime, only the govt of the country where those crimes happened, have the right to seize assets. It isn't other govts job to do the police work for them.
But having said that, I fully understand that this is war; Russia is our governments' enemy; our govt wants to ensure that those assets can't be used by the enemy for war purposes *so they're frozen.*
But once the war tensions go down, those assets should be returned- for the simple reason that they're not ours. We are not their rightful owners.

Buying seized sanctioned yachts is like buying land without a clean title. Depending on the outcome of the Russia-Ukraine war. The person who bought the yacht would be left holding the bag. When the owners their seized property back when the war is over. After a long and expensive lawsuit. The courts could order the buyer to return the yacht and pay compensation to the owner.
It's the reality of red tape unfortunately. On one hand it is important to maintain due process and there is the issue of proving all three matters for legal reasons, on the other hand I personally think we should just set them aside and moth ball them to ensure they won't case damage as they decay in port until the cases are settled.
I mean the best situation would just abandon them and auction them off when possible. There's no way the profits from auctioning it will cover the maintenance costs anyways, just let it rot. Someone will aways bid for it no matter how rotten it is.
@@rubiconnnThe problem with auctioning them prior to a definitive legal ruling is it creates a legal nightmare. A legal nightmare horrid enough that an activist lawyer might pick it up purely to challenge the ability of the state to seize and even confiscate items. It's genuinely too messy to do anything other than leaving it alone and wait for the cases to be resolved.
That's essentially what we're currently doing, it's just that mothballing a yacht requires constant expensive attention and upkeep.

The government works in this way. When the poor do some crime, especially when it's against someone rich, they have absolutely zero issues finding who's responsible and pushing them, sometimes without even a fail trail (like with Assange). While when the rich do pretty illegal things, you can never touch their properties because nothing is ever proven and it's always considered more complicated. Basically, the law is made by the rich for the rich.

I think navy trying to keep navy dockyards open so they can maintain US navy ships.
It still costs money to do all the stuff that needs to be done, that's why those docking fees exist in the first place. It still costs the Navy a lot of money to have its own ship docked, we just don't see it usually because it's "internal" (i.e. Navy paying Navy personnel and Navy contractors and using supplies from Navy stockpiles; there are still things paid for buy it doesn't get seen outside the organization the same way a business-to-business transfer is visible).

That final idea wasn't actually that bad if modified a bit, just rent them out to the public at maintenance cost.

The government should allow corporations to rent them for parties and whatnot, with this caveat: they must pay for all of the extra operation and cleanup, etc, as well as for each day they rent the boat, they must also pay for a day's worth of use for a non-profit org as well. Hell, if they did this, then I think it would be fine if the corporation wasn't charged a rental fee (they will already have to pay a lot for the staff and fuel while using it)

because its not our boat and there was no contract or anything. Personally I'm curious why the government is all of a sudden following the law in this scenario when they tend not to in their own conflicts, but generally I think its a good thing the government follows their own laws

The thing is, this yachts exists in a first place because it consumes a lot of money doing effectively nothing. Rich people doing this just to show how rich they are, to show they have so much money so they actually burning their money by buying things which require costly maintenance even if it doing nothing.
So arresting this yachts doesn't really have much sense as a punishment.
And i even believe it would be very difficult to sell this yachts because who the hell actually needs them? People who are rich enough wants such toys to be made exclusively for them because this is essentially just a stylish way of burning money. And it doesn't have sense from that perspective to buy a yacht which was built for someone else. If you're a billionaire you want YOURS personal pit for throwing money in. That is the point.
And if you really want to punish bad rich guys, you don't take their costly toys from them. You take their businesses instead, the sources from which they have the money.
In 2020 saw one of these mega-yachts quietly docked on a private wharf in Costa Rica. Google showed it was part of a Russian gangster's divorce case and it was hiding out.

I would say we are reaping our just rewards for this, but our politicians print whatever money they want anyway.

@@asahearts1And it also depreciates the dollar against every other currency, and if the US is caught lying about their financial system, they risk everyone recalling their treasury bonds at the same time, basically causing a cascading effect of raising interest rates, and an unstable economy. I mean, that debt is REAL debt owned by REAL people. If i buy $1 million in treasury bonds, the US debt goes up by another $1 million dollars plus interest... if people arent confident their investments are real theyll pull out and all of a sudden the US had a massive bill to pay and no money to pay it. They could print money, but then the value of that bond has gone negative, which effectively seals the deal that people wont loan the US money. I mean, would you loan money to someone that, when shit got tough, decided to pay you back 10% of the loan and tell you to go fuck yourself? Of course not.

The hull isn't designed to rest on blocks or anything. If you remove the ship's hull from the support provided by being in the ocean then you risk the thing breaking in half.
@@therandomidiot4994 you can dry dock boats that big, they're built on land in the first place. Its incredibly expensive to do for a long time though, usually its only done for maintenance

If you look at all the shit projects governments put money on, the upkeep of a yacht is surprisingly not on the top of the stupidity list. Not even close. Finnish government, for example, just bankrolled a research project called "Fishing in Norway and it's effects on the women's rights" for 500,000€. The other funny one was funding the anti-smoking campaign in Yemen for 200,000€. 🙃

So if the governments will be wrapped up in court over these either way, then why not be wrapped up in court over the destruction of the yachts? Sending the proceeds of the sale to Ukraine is a nice idea... if the yachts can actually be sold, but since they can't, clean them out and sink them. What are they gonna do, sue us more?
