- On the 8th of March, His Majesty, King Mswati III of Swaziland visited Waterford Kamhlaba in celebration of the 50th Anniversary. Some Waterford students performed a gumboot dance for His Majesty.

Gumboot Dance was created by miners that were forbbiden to talk among themselves as a way of communicate. Intelligent, beautiful, revolutionary!

This is very interesting, I read it first time. Are they any books or articles about the history of Gumboot Dances available? Best greetings from East Germany, former GDR ;-)) I think South Africa should have a miners museum which shows how miners lived in South Africa. Is it existing?
I just love my black people, one thing we all have in common across Africa, Caribbean or whatever the other part of the world we are at, we dance and dance hard, we bring dance and music to the world in joy and even in suffering. It never stops evolving either!

Gumboot Dance was created by migrant mine workers in what was the Transvaal, South Africa. They gave demonstrations at the mine locations every weekend. I saw a demonstration at the Waterfront in Cape Town as well, amazing rhythms.
I just learnt a gumboot dance in school today it was sooo cool!

I found it because someone posted a picture of what my father called "gumboots" and what Newfoundlanders call "logans" on a fb Newfoundland history page. I'd call what these kids are wearing "rubber boots" though. What my father called "gumboots" are rubber boots put with eyelets up the front so you could tighten the boots on your feet tightly. They have disappeared today. I guess "gumboots" is a British term.
I have to admit this was for school.

The 1st time I saw this was at the theatre in 1996, "Sarafina!" came to my country and I went with bunch if friends. Incredible that this dancewas invented by South African laborers during apartheid era.
