“গোবিন্দ রাম সাহা” বালিয়াটি জমিদার পরিবারের গোড়াপত্তন করেন। ১৮ শতকের মাঝামাঝি সময়ে তিনি লবণের বণিক ছিলেন। জমিদার পরিবারের বিভিন্ন উত্তরাধিকারের মধ্যে “কিশোরীলাল রায় চৌধুরী, রায়বাহাদুর হরেন্দ্র কুমার রায় চৌধুরী তৎকালীন শিক্ষাখাতে উন্নয়নের জন্য বিখ্যাত ছিলেন। ঢাকার জগন্নাথ কলেজ (বর্তমানে জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ছিলেন কিশোরিলাল রায় চৌধুরীর পিতা এবং যার নামানুসারে উক্ত প্রতিষ্ঠানের নামকরণ করা হয়।
