  • The 1996 Yamaha YZF660R Thundercat is a bike from my childhood and 27 years later I get to ride one! Given that it is a 600cc inline four Yamaha you might think it feels a lot like my 2010 Yamaha XJ6 Diversion, but it is not!

One of the very good-looking machines from the 90s. My neighbor had one and it was in yellow and grey. I enjoyed watching.

I bought a YZF600R new in 2001. Put 67,000 miles on it by the time I sold it many years later. I rode it from Virginia (where I live) to Alaska and California and back in 2002 which included even some gravel and dirt roads. I used it as my only form of transportation for 4 years. I even did a bunch of track days with it. Never had any major mechanical issue - still perfectly functional when I sold it. It does have 4 carburetors, and the throttle response seemed very smooth compared to newer bikes - almost every other bike I have had since has been kinda jerky when transitioning from off-throttle to gently on-throttle and kinda lumpy in the lower rpms, but YZF600R had none of those issues. The gas tank holds 5 gallons and in most circumstances it would go about 220 miles before even hitting reserve, unless you consistently go really fast (there is a lot of open space in the western USA). The stock seat was super comfy, and I found the riding position to be very comfortable - my body doesn't like the fully upright riding position, but I don't want to be in a race position either - this bike struck a good balance. It was well known in it's time for being "the most comfortable sport bike" and "not an R6." Out of the 12 bikes I've owned, by far this is the one I have the most nostalgia for. Thanks for your video!

Hey I got one and I’m a new rider. Is it normal when you pull the clutch in and your decelerating maybe 10 mph to stop I get a strange little vibration and I can’t tell what it is. It could be normal but I have no one to ask. It’s not a rough vibration it’s just a strange little vibration when I get to about maybe 10 mph until 5 mph just wondering if they all do this or if maybe I got the wrong chain tension or something else. It isn’t something that seems to serious just strange.

    • @adamharnois7072
      @adamharnois7072 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@MrSocko-vn7fw Well as you know it can be hard to describe over the internet what you are experiencing. "Strange vibration" could be a lot of things, some normal some not. But my first thoughts are: Chain too tight or too loose. Chain is old and has tight links. Wheel bearings old/loose/grinding, and especially the rear sprocket / cush drive hub bearing. I remember once having to get that bearing replaced in the middle of a road trip. It was making obvious grindy noises just rolling the bike around in a parking lot with no engine running. If you bike has around 20,000 miles on the odometer, then these kinds of problems are pretty likely (and easily fixable). I was recently helping my neighbor with his 2003 ZX-12r, and that same bearing was bad on his bike, his was so loose that the sprocket would not stay in alignment with the chain.

One of my favourite bikes ever. I had one in around 2005/6 , toured Scotland on it. I actually did a run of 500 miles back to the Midlands, with a couple of stops for fuel, but no break. I was standing on the pegs by the time I reached the Midlands, but got back to near Coventry and loved the trip

Last year was my first season, i put around 8 thousand miles on mine, i bought it with either 16 or 18 thousand on it, but swapped the engine with one that is supposed to have around 6 thousand on it, it shifts and runs amazing now.

My first bigger bike. Loved it for its simplicity and value. In many ways I regret selling it. Ultimately the seating position was too much for longer jaunts. At the time I struggled with the looks, in retrospect they are unique and look good. Brilliant bikes with an analogue flavour.

I had a 2001. These bikes can easily keep up with newer bikes, I always kinda wanted Yamaha to use this motor in something else. Like an fz6 or something

  • @cirian75

as stock these came with a 120/60 front tyre, many swapped them to 120/70 which gave better tyre choice and more stable lent grip, but made the steering slow and heavy unless the forks were dropped a little.

One of the riders here owned a Thundercat, then went to a Fireblade.
Didn't like it, bought another Thundercat, just to have something during the offseason.
Sold it and bought a Diversion, to slow, sold it, bought a Gixxer.
After 2 months sold it and bought another Fireblade.
Owns that bike for 2 years now and did some big maintenance and mods to it.
Don't think he will get rid of it any time soon now.
So it is one of those bikes that if you love it... you love it ;)

I recognised those roads behind Portsdown Hill. You made a right up a road where I hit a nasty pothole in my old Leon Cupra R in 2016; I was looking for it, as I hit it in the dark in winter ... the fecking hole is STILL THERE!

I love my cat, got one as my 1st 'bigger' bike after getting full licence, quite a jump from a 125!! I really enjoy the low tech aspect just have to feel the bike rather than rely on tech. Does it all for me can spend hours riding and feel fine, potter about town in low revs then feel like your being catspulted into stratosphere when the power kicks in at high end revs, its a completly different bike when your hanging on and the world goes all blurry 😂

I was gonna meet up with you at the Brighton burnout around 12 years ago, but you weren't able to make it. I had an RF600 Suzuki at the time, which you would have loved, because it's literally designed by Ferrari and looks amazing! The downside is that it was so 'race rep' that it was one of the most uncomfortable bikes I've ever ridden over distance.
Now I have a Ninja 650 (2023 year) and a 2007 Royal Enfield Bullet Classic with is the last carbureted Bullet model .

I have this in a 02 with 17k on it, compared to my zx6r 01 ,it's a bit heavier, brakes are brilliant, a bit more vibration, more comfy, not as sharp as zx6r.
    Overall I like it...

I have an '89 GSX750f... which is a similarish vintage/style... the vibration in the hands is killer... a couple of months ago I put grip puppies on and it's night and day... I would say it's reduced the vibration by about 50%... I used to get numbness after about an hour and a half and now it's more like 3 hours...

Any concerns with purchasing a 2000 YZF600R here in 2024 that has 38K miles for $2500? Seems to be well-maintained and in great shape. Not sure if a bike with such high miles would be considered “end of life”!
