    Actually that performance by Ralph was brilliant because it made his "anger" believable. Constantly threatened, pushed around, lost the love of his life, not being trained, yeah... great job Ralph. They even used it in Cobra Kai to show that he had a bad boy phase. Brilliant.

      @@unseenufo To be honest, I would like to know your opinions on why. In my opinion, I never thought Chozen was a very well written character. He was played by a fantastic actor, but the writing didn't really make sense to me. Johnny pestered Daniel because he was with Ali. Mike brutalized Daniel because he would get 50% of the Cobra Kai dojos. Chozen bullied Daniel...why exactly? I get the fact that Sato and Miyagi were rivals but Chozen bullying Daniel just felt like the writers needed an enemy to fight. His motivation never really made sense and it was Miyagi's story to begin with, not Daniel's. Chozen felt unrealistically evil and his inclusion into the story felt more like a weird transition to making the movie go from Miyagi's tale immediately to Daniel again. This is just my opinion but I would like to know what you guys think. Regardless, Chozen had a great personality and I am thrilled to see him return in Cobra Kai season 3. His character will definitely be better written.

      @@kalesheffer9792 first of all, he's coming back in season 3?!?!?!? Hellz to the yeah!!! Anyway, about his "purpose" in part II, a lot of what you said about his character being the way he is just for the sake of being the way he is has merit. However, being the way Sato was, I can believe that Chozen would develop certain "copycat" traits from being trained by such a traditionalist sensei. If you look at Japanese history, (especially of WWII) Japanese disciples were very easily influenced to be extremely dastardly and committed, without reservation or discretion, to hate enemies no matter what. This kind of commitment to a foe could totally be the reason Chozen automatically and unflinching devoted himself to hating the ally of his sensei's enemy. Then, of course, throughout the movie, Daniel does repeatedly put Chozen in a disrespectful (but deserved) light.
      One more thing, just because...."Live or die, man?!?!?" "Die!" "Wrong. HOOONK!!!!"

    • @kalesheffer9792
      @kalesheffer9792 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skyden24195 Yes, have you seen the season 3 teaser? It is awesome! Your point is very good but I still don't think Chozen's character is very well integrated into the story. He was also so dramatically evil like something straight out of a Disney villain. For some reason, it does not seem to fit the film very well but I'm hoping he will be more developed in season 3. Even Sato had more character development and he wasn't even the main villain! Chozen even tricked the villagers with wrong weights but as you said he had a lot of commitment. It would have been nice if he was written better so he could be more like a dark version of Daniel rather than an all evil persona that does not really make sense to the story.

      @@kalesheffer9792 haven't seen season 3 trailer. (Honestly, still realling from season 2 ending. lol) I do understand your point on Chozen, in fact, when recently watching the movie, I did kinda get the feeling of him being a bit over the top, especially when he chose to fight Daniel with the spear. Overall, yeah, he was likely written in a way so that Daniel could honk his nose at the end.

    Daniel: "We're a hit. Maybe we should take it on the road."
    Kumiko: "But we are on the road."
    Kumiko was my favorite of the love interests. I'm in total agreement with the show "Cobra Kia" being absolutely awesome, as well as agreeing that, in some respects, Johnny was done dirty, but I also thought that his commitment to making Cobra Kia better than it was under Kreese, (i.e. "No mercy" must be balanced by honor and appropriate compassion,) was an excellent adaptation of his matured character. Also great about the show is the Miyagi-Do Dojo's utilization of the (partial) plot of TKK3 as a morality lesson. When I was watching the show and Daniel mentions that he was once Cobra Kia, I had completely forgotten that bit from part III.

  • @The_Texorcist

    I always felt the second and third movie should have switched places. That just thematically it would have made more sense for the first movie Daniel is inexperienced and then in my version the second would have many of the plot points of part 3 where Daniel feels frustrated in his slow training and getting tempted to the dark side. It also would have raised the stakes as the first was just about a tournament, the second would be personal with silver and Kreese wanting to destroy Daniel and Miyagi.
    Also come to think of it switching two and three would fix one big issue with the original order. It always bugged me that the stakes of two were life and death with Daniel fighting for his life against chozen while part three was him fighting a bully in another tournament. It seems like just on that it was a step back wards. If switched it would have ended with Daniel using all he has learned in a real fight with an opponent that wanted to kill him.

      I would say with 3. It was more of a mental thing for Daniel's character. Silver built him up just to take him down. When he fights Barnes at the end, he still has the fear, until Miyagi gives him the epic pep talk.

    • @jeremyreed4951
      @jeremyreed4951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's always been my same opinion. Part One, he takes down the top students Cobra Cai had to offer. PART 2, he fights TO THE DEATH against someone who's been studying Miyagi Doe karate their entire life compared to Daniel's year or less and manages to find the strength/ courage to win. PART 3 he gets his ass kicked left and right by some random asshole. Even in the final fight he only wins because of the penalties and points lost due to Silver's plan of torturing Daniel. It just didn't make much sense. Hearing you suggest switching the order of 2 and 3 would save the continuity. That was a great thought.

    I would have kept Kumiko in the third movie, and I would have had Daniel even more advanced in his training but still unsure as to which path he should take when confronted with evil. I did find it hard to believe that with the self-confidence he learned in Okinawa, he couldn't face Kreese & Co., and wussed out. I would like to think that Miyagi and Sato took Daniel under their wings and gave him even more insight into the Miyagi style of Karate that someone like Barnes wouldn't have cause Daniel to lose a minute of sleep. After all, Chozen nearly killed him and Kumiko, so Barnes is pfft! Had they gone the III is part II road, the only way it could have been pulled off would be to film back to back and release in 1985 and 1986 respectively to keep the momentum up. COBRA KAI is making up for everything. I am excited to see where Silver and Barnes fit in with Daniel now that he is reconnecting with Chozen.

    The third film is just a disaster on every level. How can Larusso devolve so much as a character? It undermines the message of the first two films. It’s like he hasn’t grown at all. His fighting has devolved, his friendships have devolved, and he’s turn into an ass.
    There is no tougher opponent than Chozen, now we have a local named Barnes? The girlfriend is just a platonic fly on the wall who has no significance. Macchio’s acting was way over the top. Like they said, it’s a rehash of the first film with zero heart or charm. If anything, they should’ve just had Macchio’s challenge as facing multiple opponents, or even defending himself against Kreese. Don’t undermine what Miyagi has taught him or question their friendship. Geez.

    My favorite scene was Terry Silver having his underlings present him with a selection of beater cars for his ruse. I can just imagine them at the used car lot:

    Sales person: "Oh, he's a movie producer. Right this way."

    I think the 3rd or even the fourth film should have explored Daniel choosing to stay in Japan to go to school with Kumiko, and Miyagi opening a dojo to teach as Miyagi loses job from the apartments. Kreese storyline stays the same with Terry Silver working to re-open Cobra Kai all over the valley and promote Mike Barnes. Daniel could then have to come back to help Miyagi and face Barnes.
    A sort of mash between the existing storyline of part 3 with what Cobra Kai series has done.

  • @GarretGrayCamera
    @GarretGrayCamera 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I remember seeing this and thinking Daniel-san and Miyagi's life was becoming like anyone else's, after some excitement life just kind of flattens out and becomes routine, aside from the vengeful lunatic villains that pop up from time to time! I was also getting older and moving away from 'kid' movies and this movie kind of represented that. Plus, that era of great teenage 80's films was running out of steam at this point and this movie epitomized that.

    The main problem with the film is the character of Daniel himself. Macchio looks really soft and awkward and Daniel is overly wimpy and just plain unlikable. Plus, why is Daniel dressed like a nerdy grandfather for the entire movie?
    Obviously, the screenplay is very weak too. The major issue for me is that Silver's plot doesn't make much sense. Why does training Daniel to be a confident, aggressive fighter supposedly a way to guarantee that he will lose to Barnes? After all, the biggest obstacle to Daniel beating Barnes is supposedly that he's afraid of him so wouldn't teaching Daniel to be a bad-ass make it MORE likely that he might defeat Barnes? And if Daniel HAD defeated Barnes, wouldn't Daniel and Miyagi probably just reconcile, the result being that their lives would simply go on as before?

    • @GreatNinjaman
      @GreatNinjaman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The intention was:
      1. Injure Daniel in subtle ways (bruises, busted knuckles, etc) to make him less effective.
      2. To cast a shadow of doubt upon Miyagi-sensei.
      3. To add a hint of fear by showing Daniel, "Hey. This is gonna hurt you. Quite a bit".

    Honestly, I still think this movie isn't as bad as a lot of people seem to think. For me it was some of the little moments that made it at least a bit different from the past, like the bonsai trees for example. One thing that did always get on my nerves a bit is the Terry Silver character.
    I love his craziness, but I love his caring and compassionate act. I think he was very convincing...or he would've been if they didn't erase any chance of fooling the audience with a better plot twist. Seriously, they could've just introduced Terry Silver as a nice and well-meaning guy who shows up to say his piece and apologize for his friend and co-founder's behavior and deliver the news that he had died.
    Heck, if you want to show Krese anyway, make it seem like he died of consumption after talking to an old friend over the phone we never hear or see. That way, Terry Silver could continue on with his good guy act and then slowly go more towards the manic villain side as he becomes more intense while teaching Daniel.
    Once the big reveal occurs, it would've been worth it. That change alone wouldn't just make the movie a masterpiece or anything, but it would've improved it enough to warrant its existence beyond just making a sequel for the sake of it. I still enjoy the movie overall, but I don't watch it nearly as often as the first two films of the series.

    I would've really liked to see KK3 to have kept Silver and Barnes as the main villains and Kreese as the instigiator while instead of the Jesse character being in it, instead maybe have Johnny return, but after having Miyagi save him from Kreese in part 2 after the tournament, he would try to make amends with Daniel and be a rival/friendship similar to how Apollo Creed befriended Rocky in Rocky 3. I think that would've been a much greater story and be similar to the first movie but have a twist where a previous "villain character" redeems their self and actually helps Daniel.

    Tks for making a video focused on the third movie. I know that it's not popular but I like to watch it along with the original saga.

    I agree with everything you said! The Terry Silver character is a lot fun to watch and the best part of the movie. This movie is also a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine too.
    As always, great video!

    I love part 1 and 2, but never liked part 3. This explains why.

    I'm a railfan and the only thing I liked about this movie was the two scenes with Amtrak trains passing by and my favorite locomotive the EMD F40PH.
