I'm an American descendant of the Berkeley family, who came from Stoke Gifford. Berkeley Castle was their ancestral home. My immigrant ancestor to America was Frances Deighton, wife of Richard Williams (founder of Dighton, MA).
One of my favorite English landmarks. On my first visit in 1986, I'll never forget the elderly docent correcting my American pronunciation, when I recognized the Berkeley link to the California university. "My dear," she firmly stated, "the Saxon 'e' is pronounced 'ah' !" And so I was told. Such a magical place, steeped in English history.
Если бы этот джентльмен услышал мой акцент, то у него бы наверное глаза на лоб вылезли 🤭 Пожалуй, не буду пугать его своим акцентом, но в замок непременно приеду! 🤗
My Aunty Pam (real name Violet Davies as another servant also was Violet not to get them mixed up she was known as Pam) from Pentwyn Maw Merthyr Tydfil worked here as a servant in the early 1900s many a time she and other servants use to see the ghost of a Lady walking the long corridor. . Its lovely to see a part of where she worked.
My husband is a descendent of the Plantagenet's and Tudor's and although there was some dissension between families I still just love, love, this castle and this video was done so well. So glad to see and meet even though only online, a relative of the Berkeley family! It is so great that you now can be such a very special part in being right there and living the history of this castle. TY for touring what you could and explaining more of the family's life while in the castle. !
