This man is incredibly profound and a great gift to Gods Church! Praise the Lord!
I love his ideas on accountability, starting at 35:00 - "I tell people that I am committed to Christian (principles). By creating expectations in others, I hope they will help keep me faithful to what I know is true." - "We are inherently opaque self-deceivers. So I learn how to be a Christian by having friends tell me how to do that. Without them I would be more than ready to be captured by the lies I tell myself."
His comments from 51.27 are some of the funniest I've heard a theologian say, and I mean that in a good way. Bravo Mons Hauerwas.
Excellent interview. It would also be interesting to hear Stan's views on the profound Christian anthropology of Rene Girard & how the individual (as well as society) can only be "saved" from from the destructive effects of negative mimetic desire by embracing the rubrics of non-violence & renouncing all scapegoating mechanisms. How he would differ from Girard would also be helpful. When would self-defense (oneself/others) be appropriate to one who's committed to leading a life of non-violence?

Indeed. What I want, and what I sense is what Jesus wants is for us to be able to be different and love one another instead of be different and try to annihilate one another. Sameness is not really the issue.

Have you ever searched for God? Not trying to be contentious, but I'm genuinely curious.
It is hard to define God in a world with many and diverse meanings to the word GOD/god. Father Son and Holy Spirit is specific for sure.
